Discussion on the types of fiberglass and materials that should be used. SMC fiberglass vs regular fiberglass. SMC is Sheet Molding Compound. I say Sheet Material Compound like a billion times 😁😁🤷🏼‍♂️
Differences between epoxy resin, regular fiberglass resin and why i chose to use Evercoat SMC fiberglass resin form my sheet molding compound repair on my 1975 firebird formula hood. Also the differences between fiberglass matting and fiberglass cloth and biaxial fiberglass cloth.

Im an expert in composites and this agent can be removed from the surface for a strong bond with any resins (smc or not). First you hit the surface with 80 grit and then clean it really really good with a wax and grease remover. Lastly, do a panel wipe with acetone and it'll bond like hell

Cool. Thanks! I kinda went ocd on researching. I’m sure your repairs will be good. I did read where plenty of folks have used the regular resin and it turned out fine. Also where folks have used the mat with epoxy resin and it worked. It took me a little while to put it all together since there wasn’t one definitive source that talked about all of that. So that was my main motivation in making this vid. Kind of a one stop shop for someone needing info. Thanks for tuning in!

The resin they sell for Boat Repair doesn't have curing wax as well, most of the resin sold at auto parts stores does. If the surface isn't sticky when cured, it has wax in it. If You lay wax paper on flat panels with resin underneath it will cure smooth and not be sticky, try it for yourself first to make sure. 😉😊

Bought a '95 Kawasaki 750SXi in 2009 from the original owner that's still in great shape. Previous owner did some IJSBA racing with it (and so have I) but he never mentioned that there must've been some incident because after about 4 years, the bottom front of the hull started delaminating on me -- approximately in the location where, if you did a tire log jump in a race, the hull would strike the tires. I ended up swapping engines in 2019 due to oil injection failure, and while I had the engine bay empty with fuel tank removed, I could see the dark color repair job contrasting with the chalky white factory SMC hull. Indicates to me that whoever did the job used standard polyester fiberglass resin, which might explain why the delam happened. I repaired it using West Systems epoxy resin and so far all is well. That's the only fiberglass work I've ever done, so that project was uncharted territory for me. Previous owner would've benefited from seeing this video, though I suppose like you said, using the wrong resin can still work -- perhaps for a limited amount of time -- and it did hold up long enough for him to sell the ski haha.

@HeavyPedalGarage
@HeavyPedalGarage 2 года назад
Good question! I used duraglass and bondoglass body filler on my SMC hood. Whether it’s SMC or fiberglass, I would just make sure that whatever filler you use is approved for that material. It should say on the label or a quick google should tell you if it’s ok to use.

Do you think I could use fiberglass to make wheel tubs and patch big floor pan holes? I say make wheel tubes cause rust basically took out the entirety of my wheel tub except the strut tower which is structural thank God and btw when I say big I mean like massive compared to what I've seen on youtube, all the videos on "big" holes are not nearly as big as mine
@HeavyPedalGarage
@HeavyPedalGarage Год назад
I’m definitely not a pro. Have done some repair work but I think the challenge with big holes would be figuring out some kind of structure to hold the matting and cloth in the shape that you want. I think it would be ugly but could work. Metal would be the way to go for what it sounds like you want to do.

Isn't there any source for fiberglass matting without the styrene in the USA so that you can use a true epoxy resin? Most of what I read indicates you need an epoxy resin to bond to the SMC. If the fiberglass matting without styrene is available in Europe, what is the brand name?
@HeavyPedalGarage
@HeavyPedalGarage 3 года назад
I don’t know the name brand for the European product. This is why I went with the Evercoat SMC resin. It works on the SMC and it melts the styrene. It’s some kind of hybrid I guess.
@walterg4025
@walterg4025 3 года назад
@@HeavyPedalGarage OK, I've done some internet research. There are basically three types of fiberglass mat; 1 emulsion bonded (not compatible with epoxy due to styrene), 2. powder bonded (compatible with epoxy, because no styrene, and 3. stitched (compatible with epoxy, because no styrene). The stitched has been discontinued by Owens Corning which seems to be the sole supplier/maker that I can see. There is a distributor that's seeking a replacement source for the stitched, but no luck as of today. The powder bonded appears to be readily available in the UK and Australia and China is likely the maker. You can get powder bonded CSM from at least one supplier on Amazon.com www.amazon.com/Fiberglass-Premium-Chopped-Strand-Mat/dp/B01FPI8WQ0?th=1 (50"x3yds is powder bonded) which appears to be sourced from China. Based on what I've read, SMC repair needs epoxy for best results. So, I'm hesitant to substitute anything for the epoxy. Valvoline PlioGrip has a SMC epoxy-based repair system that uses their fiberglass material. See repair instructions at bonding-solutions.com/pliogrip-sds/ There are also some videos on RU-vid; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ogoPfYD64fQ.html

The information readily available about SMC repair isn't very clear if you're not very familiar with fiberglass products ,and it's very easy to make the mistake of using the wrong products, especially if you just buy a fiberglass repair kit. I've noticed on several motorcycle forums that threads on this topic are not well discussed. You've got to be very careful buying products from China. I've seen several listings where they don't state the type of fiberglass mat binding, and yet they claim their product is good for polyester resin and epoxy resin.
