Before you pick up your New Van! Avoid the new Caravan Disaster!

Hey everyone! Thanks for watching. I put this video together as I'm disappointed seeing new van owners being stung with setups they had not expected. They had been sold on something a lot better than what they received. Even dealers not wanting to have anything to do with the issues after the purchase. There has been a lot of vans build in the last couple of years and some manufacturers have not been testing things properly before leaving the factories. I hope this video helps someone before they roll it out of the dealership with unfinished and untested pieces.

Great tips mate, been living on solar from camper trailer/car for good 14yrs now. Size does matter. Lol. Heavy duty cables and over kill everything. Been thru a few 25amp dcdc chargers trying keep up with dual agm batteries.they work too hard and end up dying. That redarc 50amp dcdc you showed is gold.

Your video is very useful. I would just add some info for your watchers - that weight scale is REALLY bad. We found ours was telling us our van was 450 Kg heavier than it actually was. We got our money back, but just so you know, we had to send it back to the store who insisted it had to go back to the importer. It took weeks, and by the time we discovered this, we had stripped out so much stuff from our van that we had to think about selling it and or get a new tow vehicle. There is NO way to calibrate it or test its accuracy. Luckily we went to local tip and found out we had 450 Kg to play with, it was such a RELIEF.

A video with no BS. We picked up our brand new van and the guy that did the handover picked up 2 extremely minor issues that he hired immediately. We hooked up the 4x4 and no tail lights. They fixed it also immediately and off we went. The cd player didn’t work and they organised an auto electrician (we live interstate). Absolutely love the van and had no further issues. The moral of this is is that there are good honest people around.get out there and enjoy your mobile holiday home 😊

Great video, there are so many vans being sold that don't do what the salesman says they will do, this is actually legal grounds for repair or refund. Anything the salesman tells you legally forms part of the warranty, It's called "Express Warranties". If they tell you that this van has enough power to last a week and it does not, then they have to repair or modify it so it does. The trouble is people don't understand this and are not willing to go the extra mile to hold these manufacturers to account, so they take advantage of our apathy.
@stevespatrol
@stevespatrol Год назад
What they tell what the van will do and you go out and say use that little extra power then blame the sales man it al comes down to variables.
@alexanderpaterson968
@alexanderpaterson968 Год назад
Absolutely ridiculous.. how does the salesperson know exactly what you're going to use, what the weather is like and where it's going to be parked? This is what's wrong with the industry.. people can only be helped so much but at a certain point you need to educate yourself.. it's not as simple as a car salesman saying you're going to get x amount of km's in a tank. Once people understand caravans are trailers made from Chinese electronics and appliances comparable to what you'd find at k mart (at best), built by people with no trade or qualification, getting paid $780 per week despite having plenty of high income skills, they will realise what you're paying for is 5 days worth of labour for 15 skilled factory workers + materials and profit..

Thank you for your post.! Great advice deluxe. My take away is: Make a list of things you want out of the van before talking to any manufacturers for comfort, ergonomics, workability, usage, appliances, amount of off road / off grid , etc. Based on the above. Ask the manufacturer for confirmation on the power system - cable diameters, overall power system (chargers, etc), solar panel system specs, fridge spec, generally how the things are wired up. As much info as you can get then pay an experienced auto electrician to review. Small investment for peace of mind. Check all weights, - vehicle before, check with someone that knows this stuff with all the right gear to check and have them check all the vehicle and van weights on pick up (to confirm the spec weights are correct). Ive seen some you tube posts on this. These people have all the right gear to check weights, etc. Small investment for peace of mind. Also have a mechanic that knows vans to review the suspension, towing rig, chassis, etc. Once again, small investment for peace of mind. Check everything works.

We have a van almost 10 years old and had an electrical fire on the weekend which could of engulfed our van if we hadn’t noticed smoke whilst driving. We’ve always used an auto electrician, so we are in shock that this simple failure could of written off our van or worse still killed us as the fire was under the bed. Still waiting on it to be assessed. Message is to not do electrical work on your van if you’re not fully qualified.

Why sell crap then? If the dealers all got together and refused to sell crap maybe the industry will improve? And why do most salesman sell vans that are to heavy (tow ball and GCM) weights for the tow vehicle?
@alexanderpaterson968
@alexanderpaterson968 Год назад
@stevespatrol because they're buying a van whether it's from me or another salesman because they want one. I can be honest and give them the best advice I can, but for the most part all traditional Aussie vans are built the same so no need to spend 120k when you can have the same experience for 60 or so (new). If buying used I'll try and steer them in the direction of the tidiest, best value for money van with the size and layout they're looking for that suits their load capacity. Salesman selling overweight vans comes down to the fact that there's no formal training in the caravan industry (or for the automotive industry either) on vehicle weight laws. Unfortunate that the buyers doubt combined with the very average support from manufacturers in the industry generally leads to a short career for most good hearted caravan salesman. People would rather listen to the bullshit artists and carnies at shows and bulldog you on price than sit down and create a relationship with a quality salesperson to get the van right.. The knowledge needed to give the right advice takes YEARS to acquire In the industry, even for somebody like me who grew up in caravans full time. I've also worked at zone rv doing quality control and can say 110% if you want a quality van because you're unhappy with the rest of the industry, buy one unless you want to pay for a Bruder. They start at 125 or so for the 20'6 base and the vans roll out with no expenses spared. They hold their value quite well and are streamlining their factory and increasing quality and consistency. They properly back their product and use only high end inclusions and building materials. But for the sake of the industry, please don't complain much about it. And if you do, be nice because it's the best you can get.
@stevespatrol
@stevespatrol Год назад
@@alexanderpaterson968 thanks for the advice about Zone RV. They are a great looking van and seem very different to the rest. The Bruder is great if you have a 4wd to tow it to use it to its full potential.

Looked at upgrading instead bought a 200a Bluetti portable pack. Has a fantastic holding power capacity. Pug it into the mains of the caravan & I run microwave, toaster, kettle, second TV as well as when I leave the caravan to do a separate trip it goes with me. I leave the extra solar panels at home, no need instead run a dcdc 40amp to a 100amp Lithium with a 1500 inverter plug two power adapters into the Bluetti for 2hrs & fully charged, also leave 4wd on idle to keep lithium charged. Simple & the best system. Cheers

Yes! Fuses! Fuses! Fuses! Circuit protection is a must! I just watched the Tesla Investor Day 2023 and saw they're getting rid of the crappy old 12v low voltage battery, and switching to 48V for all vehicle computer, lights, and controllers. This will put a bomb up the automotive supply industry to start cranking out 48v accessories. Yes, off-roading with caravans might seem like its got nothing to do with EVs and Tesla, but the 12v system in cars and vans is last century. 48V is so much better, A LOT SMALLER cables. 48V alternators will be shed loads more efficient! All the smallish off grid cabins I've set up that I convinced the client to go 48V, those systems PERFORM and CHARGE SOOOO fast. If I was building a decent sized van electrical system, I wouldn't waste my time with 12V. 48V LFP is the heaven sent system. Just go DC to DC converter. Also, just get residential solar panles from an Electrical wholesaler, don't piss about with 4WD wholesaler solar panels. L&H Electical sell 500w panels for around $280 including GST.

On weights, I don't even think in some cases folks selling these things understand the multiplicity of requirements that all need to be met. I attended a van and 4wd show recently and was looking at a big thing with 3 water tanks and all the gizmos, stated tare weight was 3100kgs, Salesman approached, I said mate no one can pull these things if they don't have an American truck starting 2500. He informed me I didn't know what I was talking about so I walked away. Be interesting where this goes, where liability stops and starts when something happens and warranty and insurance become void due to one of the eight weights not meeting legal requirements. There is also an enormous amount of misinformation out there, so much here on the tube, some really good info too but I am sure not everyone is finding the really good ones.

@Jimmygcaravanpro Год назад
Hey Joe. The cables to the power points should be fine from factory. As for the cables from the batteries to the inverter they should be 50mm fused cable if using a 2000W inverter. A 2000W inverter will run most appliances. It would be good to talk to a licensed electrician and let them know which appliances you would like to run. They will then be able to recommend which size inverter you require and also ensure your battery system can handle it. A licensed electrician will need to connect the inverter to the PowerPoints for you if you decide to go that way. Hope that helps 👍

Unfortunately I have had more than one, less than competent auto electrician over the years, so from watching this video it would seem that on the day of picking up a new van I need a auto electrician to accompany me and spend half a day checking everything electrical is to specks before handing over the last payment (money is power) so how do I find a competent auto electrician to help with this. The whole process of buying a car and van is so full of problems that there is a glaring opportunity for a “consultant” that at the purchasers cost will recommend a suitable tow vehicle van (size and weight) and specify the correct electrical requirements and cable sizing that are more than able to meet the customer’s requirements. Let’s face it a tow vehicle with some extra is at least a hundred thousand dollars same with a van, so the cost of paying a consultant is a small cost for peace of mind.

Very good point DB, it can be expensive to get the new van and car, then to also ensure the systems are working correctly between both. Taking a consultant who knows what they are looking at would be super beneficial. Thankyou very much for your comment!

@@stevespatrol camper any day of the week. Bugger hauling 3.5t anchor behind your little shitbox car, worrying about weights, getting airbags, gvm upgrades, finding somewhere to store that massive eyesore. Yeah caravan is a brilliant idea 🤡

@@Chris-sf2cp clearly no idea about the van scene. I bought a new 22 footer that tares at 2100kg and maxes at 2700kg. And has less ball weight than most “Camper trailers”. After a recent 3 week stint to far north QLD and back the amount of people that we met that have come from the camper trailer scene into vans and wished they bought a van from the get go was surprising. Sleeps the 4 of us in extreme comfort.
