hi Jason I would just like to thank you for your no nonsense approach to your videos. not only are they very helpful to me at the age of 63 and hiking the AT this year, but I also think back when I was a young boy and watched a special show weekly about fishing and how to . I hope there are young kids watching your show and getting the inspiration to encourage them to hike and get out doors.

I got some leg pains during the first few days of my thru hike of the Camino de Santiago back in 2014, but I was dead set against poles. One of my fellow travelers forced me to borrow a pair and then buy my own pair in the next town. I finished the entire hike (33 days) and I've been using them ever since, and am definitely a convert!

Jason many years have passed since I came aboard. It's seldom that I comment on any Ch. I had to let you know I so appreciate how you've remained consistent in offing us such good reliable inside views on equipment and use. Sure I love the adventures of course, bur this is your foundation that first brought me aboard and keeps me an avid viewer. Thank You ever so much and as always, Blessings from Oregon. ... Mike.

Normally I just drip-dry, but I like the idea of a pee rag. Also, I LOVE that you burn the toilet paper. Not big on littering. Thank you!

Trekking poles are also helpful for blocking overhanging brush, especially when its thorny, and to help relocate the dreaded rattle snake.

The trekking poles have saved me from falling on my butt numerous times. They also save your knees when you're hiking down steep mountains. I used them for breaking when the trails are steep coming down.

Watched your video a few times and used my new trekking poles today following your tips. First time using poles, and I did fall forward. My normal motion is to fall on the palm of my hands since I always wear gloves, but not so while your hand in the poles. Was thinking, good i put my hands the way you recommended, otherwise maybe i have injury. Poles great for going down, and used your techniques. Thanks. Cheers gordon

I've had a knee replacement and I don't know how I ever got alone without trekking poles but I use the rubber stoppers the points would stick in the ground and I would have to pluck them out very aggravating just keep them in my pockets when not used and by the way I use Walmart Ozark trail $19.00 and I love them no problems at all.

'Whatever comes natural' I think that is very valid. What u find helps U in term of balance, making the walk comfortable etc. Probably one of the best vids about using hiking poles. Deserves to be a standalone rather than tucked into larger topic.

These have got me back on the trail, saved my knees, and possibly my life more than once (or at least my dignity). I noticed that you removed the straps on an earlier video. I'm glad you've come around to the most effective way to use trekking poles. :)

Nope I still remove them. In fact I haven't used straps in about 3 years I think.

I bought mine from Target for $20.00 so far they are holding up. I just used them in the "correct" manner for the first time yesterday, will take a few hikes to get use to it. That said, even incorrect technique helped with my knees etc. Thanks for the video, who knew?

Also if you have same problem than what I have with my hands, that they get swollen when I do hiking, the poles helps with that. With poles I never have that issue. The main reason why I got them though was that I can not see how far away something is. In hiking that is real issue when going downhill in places where you have to step down from one rock to other example. With having a backbag on it gets scary real fast when you don't have a clue how big jump you have to do to get where you want to go. On my first hike I had to ask people help me because I chikened out in one point. Went and got my poles after that hike and haven't had a problem with those parts after that. The pole gives me visual aid to see what the distance is. Really wouldn't go on hike without them.

Do you recommend having these trekking poles if your over weight and have issues with leg pain.. I am over weight and want to start but even when I walk on flat ground my legs start hurting meaning I get muscle pain and after the muscle pain I start getting stiffness and my legs buckle up .. so I was wondering if this can help me ..

To give you some info, my buddy Matt (you can see him in the latest Dolly Sods video), he's about 280lbs similair height. He used some $20 Ohuhu poles I had laying around and he had no problems with durability. I would go with aluminum. GL man!

You should notice a big difference, especially on your knees with being able to spread the force out between your legs and arms.

Part time Hiker I’m not as tall as you...5’4” but in the same weight range and I have an older Leki model with the good locks and I’ve been using them for over a year. From Indiana to now Colorado, through creek beds, snow, and mountains and they have saved me every time. I also use them for my tent and tarp set ups. So Leki all the way.

I am anemic, so get out of breath easily on steep inclines. Have you noticed that with trekking poles you don't lose your breath so quickly? I can walk flat trails easily, but don't want to be limited to them.

Carbon poles vs. Aluminum? I bought aluminum because of lower price, and have had no issues yet, but I haven't done any hardcore multi-day backpacking. Should I be concerned that aluminum is weaker or anything like that?
@FrozensAdventures
@FrozensAdventures 6 лет назад
Carbon poles are just lighter, might be a little stronger too. The thing with carbon is if they fail they snap, with aluminum if they fail the bend and they can the be bent back.
@nemome5837
@nemome5837 5 лет назад
Carbon fibre gets brittle in the cold and can fail and they are lighter and can blow around in the breeze and make walking hazardous. You get fatigued struggling with the pole and because the tip isn't landing where you want to place it, you can fall.
@diomepa2100
@diomepa2100 3 года назад
For anyone still interested in this. Carbon is lighter and stronger - but unlike aluminum, you can snap them catastrophically. Carbon also ages worse. Aluminum, is generally speaking more durable. Also yes, aluminum is heavier, so you can maintain momentum generally easier, especially in cross wind. On the other hand if you are walking on the side of a ridge (those meandering trails in high mountains), lighter poles are better.

I LOVE my LEKI poles and take them on ever hike. But even on long day hikes, the straps leave blisters. I know I’m holding them the correct way cause I’ve watched countless videos and they are loose like you were talking about. Anyone have advice? Or do I just have to deal?

You will develop tougher skin over time but you could use a pair of gloves that feel good. Maybe ones if it's not too cold.

I just took my wife on her first backpacking trip last week, you can check out the video here if you'd like ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_tRf60vy1fo.html I took my spare set of trekking poles and when we got to the trailhead, she insisted that she didn't need them. Guess who didn't have their trekking poles by the end of the trip! Haha! By the way, do you or have you ever used a gimbal to shoot your videos? Excellent job! Thanks!

A way of saying ty for these video's is that I make walking sticks facebook.com/KnotinHead/ and would love to make ya one (or a matching set), you would need to ofc give me any special features you want, carved saying, etc. The idea is it would be custom. I have made them for others, I enjoy it, but ty again.
