This is a barre for beginning level ballet students of all ages! In this class, we move very slowly and methodically and work on placement, strength, musicality, and technique. However this is also great for advanced dancers who want to work on basics! So pay attention to placement throughout the workout.

Hello! I discovered your channel a few years algo while I lived in Africa. I lived in a small town with bad internet so I actually downloaded a few of your videos. I love your explanations, your lifestyle videos and how you fight to promote a healthy body image. I live in Brussels now but after a knee injury the doctor told me I needed to be very careful. I signed up to a gym to strengthen my legs progressively. I started with pilates, yoga and aquagym. After a few months I found out that my pilates teacher also gave ballet. Since he knew about my injury, he actually allowed me to attend his ballet class and also gave me tips like no more than a demi plié, no jumping and no one foot balance. Since the confinement started, I started doing your easy ballet barre, pilates total body work out and 20 minutes leg tutorial every day. Thank you for this video!!! It's exactly what I need, specially, with the explanations about the steps on the side. Sorry for my mistakes. English is not my first language.

@esstown
@esstown 4 года назад
Important point for beginners: when she turns towards the barre she does not mean for you to do the same. Stay square, stay sideways to the barre and keep your leg behind you when going to the back. She does it to help you see her back leg (and to avoid the wall). There ARE advanced movements involving turns to or away from the barre but this is not what she intends here. (For an example of how such turns really can be used see Kathryn Morgan's intermediate/advanced barre rond de jambe exercise. Cheers!

I used to study ballet seriously back in the day and I really enjoyed this class. My only requests would be to allow more time between the transitions from one side to the other so we at home have time to swing our chair around and get ready. Also, if Kathryn would use the proper ballet terms and names more frequently it would help beginners learn them, and old timers keep track of the steps.

As a professional pianist, I have posture issues. This workout has helped my breathing, posture, and fostered a lack of pain while sitting at the piano for 5 or 6 hours daily 7 days a week. I can't recommend it enough as I practice her beginners' workout daily. @esstown
@esstown 4 года назад
Yep! Without this resistance in the plie we have no shock absorption for landing or coming down out of anything. This resistance keeps us safe, and is much of what creates the illusion of effortlessness and weightlessness, which is the essence of classical dance.

The steps are clearly explained and are challenging without being difficult, the piano music is lovely and varied, the pace is excellent, and the delivery is helpful, engaging and has a lovely personal touch. A little note to anyone going to try ballet .... I have started ballet with some basic movement and discovered this video ...I have been practicing this video from last 1 and half months ...as a total beginner it was difficult for me ...but I ended up doing it daily or sometimes 2 - 3 times in a week ...I have truly improved and can feel it in balance positions and technique wise both ...I will keep posting my advancements 29/12/20 : So now a days I remember the combination and just simply skip to the combination part rather than listening the whole follow along thing 7/1/21 : With the barre I am also doing a little centre class ...I literally mess every fricking step ...but I still try to do it ...I suck at piourettes....but yeah I will keep you updated what happens next Also my Susu and Pose balance (I am not sure how to write it) has improved ..

Hi Kathryn. Started ballet a couple of months back as an adult. Looking for some exercises between my biweekly classes I came across your video. It’s very very helpful, but it is also very nicely made and aesthetically pleasing (I really love the way you kept the colours simple and the sound clear and well-balanced between explanations and music. Thank you very much. Lia (Switzerland)

How did you make me stop stereotyping ballet and than interested in it I have no idea. I listen to your videos every day when I'm falling asleep (less nightmares for some reason). I learn English by watching your videos. Thank you for that you are 💜 P.S. Can I do this class if I've never done ballet in my life (maybe in the future 😉)?

I am floored! Finally, a barre workout that the average woman can do and LOVE!!! I''m 47 and haven't done ballet in over 30 years. You're an outstanding teacher... it was empowering, how you managed to take all the frustration out of an at-home ballet barre workout. I did everything from start to finish and felt really wonderful during and after. Thanks a million, Kathryn Morgan! I've searched and finally found what I was looking for. Love, light, blessings. XO

I took ballet classes as a child, but always felt discouraged in my classes. I was not the most graceful or flexible child, and the other girls in my classes used to pick on me. I have always wanted to get back into it to help with my joint problems as well as just keeping me active in an activity that I enjoy. This video really challenged me, but is a perfect video to help us get back into it. I feel incredible, and I'm healing my inner child. Thank you!

@Elizabeth-lv5dj
@Elizabeth-lv5dj 4 года назад
Sophie X As far as I know it’s very similar to third position but the right foot in the front is tucked in further than in third. Be careful so you don’t hurt yourself 😅 I’m struggling with those dang leg raise things myself, any of the exercises where you have to raise your leg to your hip I’m so struggling.
@edelinet
@edelinet 4 года назад
Turn out develops slowly for adults - so don't push your feet into fifth if your hips aren't loose enough. You could hurt yourself. The turn out needs to be from the hips, the knee caps aligned above the direction your toes are pointing... Go slow!
@ginaferrara4230
@ginaferrara4230 4 года назад
I do everything in third if fifth is the starting point. It’s literally impossible to keep a strong fifth as an adult. Your hips are set in place. Don’t feel bad. Eventually it will seem like less of a stretch.

@alexiaalexanderwight1199 4 года назад
You don't need to be as turned out as she is! If you're standing in first, you basically just move your front foot forward so your heel is touching your toe joint. It's totally fine if the angle between your feet at that point is like 90 degrees or even less, that flat fifth only comes with YEARS (or even decades) of training! (Apart from a few lucky souls who just have naturally great turnout hah)

your demi should be fairly shallow, with knees pressing to the side with resistance, while grand is just all flexibility
@esstown
@esstown 4 года назад
My ballet master (who is also a kinesiologist, lucky me!) explained it to me this way: In 2nd position, the demi is about half as deep as the grand. The main point of the grand plie in 2nd is turnout. So here is when you zero in on pressing your knees HARD towards the back, i.e. towards whatever wall is behind you. Open the book as wide as humanly possible as seen from the front! Then as you enter the grand keep holding this backward pressure towards the back wall as you go deeper. The grand should go as deep as you can without raising the heels. This works on your turnout strength in a more abducted hip position. Some people, who have limited plie due to inflexible ankles STRICTLY due to front lip of the leg bone (tibia) approximating against the top lip of the ankle bone (talus), which cannot be changed without surgery, are recommended to allow their heels off the ground slightly, at the very end of their grand plie in 2nd, so that they may engage their turnout in the full range intended by the grand in 2nd, hence not missing out on the benefit.
