My hive seemingly made it through my first winter. Early last fall, on someone’s suggestion, I swapped my honey-bound upper deep for my nearly abandoned lower deep, so that they would try to have two deeps of honey stores. Saturday, I opened up my hive to evaluate whether to swap the deeps back, in addition to changing from fondant to sugar syrup feed. The bees in my hive have already been collecting nectar and pollen this spring and I see some capped brood (not too much, though, but with the reduced population, I did see the queen). The bottom deep (now the upper deep) is nearly full of capped honey. There doesn’t seem to be any more room in the upper deep to store honey. Only 2-3 frames in the brood deep have activity on them, so there is room for them to expand their population. I think that, if there is a preference for the bees to use nectar/pollen/honey from the current season, if it is available, then I may have to do something about the full honey deep, but I am not sure what that something is. My local beekeepers association's recommendation, first, was to remove the sugar syrup feeder that I just placed because the bees have enough honey resources and I wouldn't want them to just be converting the sugar syrup into more stored honey. Do I remove some of the full frames of honey and checkerboard the deep with empty frames? What do I do with the frames I remove, since this honey has, in its history, received both formic acid and oxalic acid mite treatments. Thank you for your recommendations. Steve (Massachusetts)

Fat bodied Winter bees. How do they appear? Is it a genetic difference or a just physiological difference? How does it happen, are the larva fed differently to produce fat bodied bees? “Love that shot of the bee hives in the snow amongst the trees at 43:00”

The fats are stored in their abdomen, thorax and yes, even in their heads. They take on more fat than earlier season bees. Genetically the same.

Excellent video, I'm following this channel nonstop..lol. This will be my first year beekeeping. I caught my first wild swarm ever, I'm so stoked! I put them in my hive with two fully drawn better bee frames, then filled it with empty wooden frames to fill out my 10FR box. The temp here in SW Missouri is ranging between 50-70's so I think I'm going to feed them 1:1 sugar syrup to get them going. The pollen count (according to my app) the last 2-3 weeks has been med-high to high (maple, elm, juniper, and ash). Should I continue to feed them with the pollen being high? I put an entrance reducer in.... is there anything else I should do besides stay out of the hive for a week or so? Note: I did set my swarm trap back in the same place to see if I get lucky twice💯 I'm just so excited..lol

HI Peter, what a great opportunity, having feral colonies in trees so near to your home! I would put up a deer stand right there so I could watch them at length. Frederick Dunn I too have several feral colonies close by one is the closest is 50m from my door and several more approx every 300m along the river. The closest is in a live river red gum( eucalyptus camaldulensis) tree knot about 15feet up the next is in a cemetery in a live box tree at 7 feet up. Would you like some footage? @peterzweck1763
@peterzweck1763 4 года назад
@@FrederickDunn both colonies are in live Murray Cyprus pine trees (Callitris columellaris - Australian). It is fairly common for these trees to have cracks opening up to hollows in the trunks and bees quite often take advantage of these. In both these colonies the entrances are, very conveniently, only 5ft off the ground! I stand 3 or 4ft away from the entrances and watch them.

Fred, here's a silly question (and Beshy above might like to comment too). I want to get started with beekeeping. I'm in SE Australia and 10s of 1000s of commercial hives were lost in the recent bushfires. So I'm guessing nucs/packages will be in great demand and short supply next spring. Of course we are now coming into Autumn. Our winters are mild with occasional frosts. We have been in a drought and I'm guessing our local wild bees are doing it tough, although they are actually bringing in pollen now - from where I don't know. My question is - do you think I could build up my local feral colonies by feeding them syrup? The idea being this might eventually encourage them to swarm more and increase the (low I know) odds of catching/trapping one.
@BESHYSBEES

Thanks for sharing Carlos! :) Nothing wrong with taking that extra safety factor onboard. It's particularly an issue when painting interiors. In regard to the distance each hive should be from others. Look at "628DirtRooster Bees" Jun 27, 2014 VLOG titled "Difficult Triple Hive Removal Day One" and "Two". OK, a chimney separates 2 of the entrances but the 3rd in the same house is only feet away from the other.

Thanks for sharing that Ian! When we consider all feral colonies and their decision making as well as spacing, farther apart is always better for many reasons. There are always going to be some exceptions to that. The health and benefits of well spaced out hives are a huge bonus. I do like watching Dirt Rooster and Mr Ed when I have some time on my hands. Great guys! I've had hive equipment right in my apiary that was just "staged" get occupied by a swarm which is convenient, but spacing them out as much as possible is a very good move. I've enjoyed your videos packed with good information. I was thinking about the varroa mites in package bees myself. Would it be easier to check them with a varroa easy check instead of using the oxalic acid? Scooping some bees straight out of the package would be sure to keep out any robber bees from the area. Or do you think that the 200-300 bees lost would hurt the colony? That loss to me doesnt seem detrimental.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
Hi Kelly, that's a good idea, but my OAV treatment will not only give me a mite count, but will also clear the entire package of mites. When doing a meaningful count in an active hive, we target the nurse bees. Packages are a mixed box of foragers etc... Thank you for watching and commenting :)

Hi, Fred. Wouldn't the best method to determine if a package has Varroa present be an alcohol wash?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 года назад
I don't need the accuracy of an alcohol wash with a package, remember that these aren't necessarily nurse bees. The OAV will drop the mites like flies at a very efficient level and I'll get a feel for their level of loading. You're right in that a mite-wash with alcohol would produce the most accurate count, but I want to assess the entire package, not just a few hundred occupants annnnd, since I will be treating the entire package anyway, the alcohol or even sugar shake method would be an unnecessary extra step. Sugar rolls/shakes come in at a tight second to the alcohol wash and since I have lots of time to do it, that's my personal favorite method. I would probably do the alcohol wash if I had hundreds of hives to attend to.

@BESHYSBEES 4 года назад
It’s a queen cell but made under the swarming impulse there is also superseded queen cells and emergency queen cells 👍
@danieltaylor8113
@danieltaylor8113 4 года назад
Yes basically, a queen cup is where they have drawn a normal cell out a bit but not put an egg in it so its unused. And then a queen cell is when they have laid an egg in it and its hatched into a baby larva and the worker bees draw that out into the big cell that looks like a peanut shell. People say queen cell when bees are superceding the queen like the orginal queen is starting to not do well and the colony doesnt want to swarm they just need a new and better queen, and they say swarm cell when the colony is making queen cells because the hive is jam packed, so full of bees and resources that there is no room left and they are preparing to leave. Same thing just under different conditions and only some people use rhe separate terms.

Do you have to take honey off your bees this time of year I'm in pa and we had a awesome fall flow and my bees are coming out of winter right with tons of honey still on em I'm worried that these bees will swarm early just because there is no room my bees are all caught wild swarms other than 2 half breed muts seems like there busting at the seems already what would you do? my double stack 5 frame nucs still have a top box full of capped honey and I would hate to loose these good queens to swarms

I personally would pull that winter honey and provide at least one empty box of frames for them to expand into annnnd always be ready with more boxes as they begin to fill what they have. Sometimes it's hard to stop the swarming instinct even when you do everything right. But that's what I'd do. All of my swarm captures from last year are doing extremely well also, I think we're getting into a truly great beekeeping year.

Yes, it is indeed... zero mice made entry into the hives this year I'm happy to report.

Has anyone ever published a study about varroa attacking our native bees such as bumblebees and such? All I have seen pertains to honeybees. Maybe a viewer has the answer. Thanks

Varroa destructor is unique to the honey bee and no others.
