I was taught when doing cursive that you shouldn't lift your pen between letters so I never thought I was doing that wrong until now. Thanks so much for your help!
@HowtoHandLetter
@HowtoHandLetter 6 лет назад
Yes! That is true for formal cursive, but hand lettering is kind of different. It's like a combination of a freestyle cursive but adding in the thick downstrokes and the thin upstrokes... because of that factor, it's helpful to break up your strokes so that you can refocus on how hard you are supposed to be pushing! At the beginning, it can be hard to transition from thick to thin strokes without that little pause. If you were just doing cursive with a pencil or regular pen, you wouldn't have to lift up your pen though - I hope that makes sense!

#4 and #5 are so true of any creative enterprise. I can't tell you how many times I've had to tell people to just keep practicing, don't be discouraged by someone who's been drawing for years and years especially when you are just starting out! They didn't start out at the level they are at, and I promise expensive supplies are not a shortcut. I'm really glad you brought this one up.

Practice really is the key. I'm a beginner at hand lettering and wanted to try differents pens. I bought one tombow dual brush and was disappointed because I didn't like it. But I kept trying and after months of practice (not every day but from time to time), I think I'm beginning to understand how to write with it. I'm also a lefty so I don't know if I'm having more difficulties than a right handed person 😅 Anyway, thank you for the tips!

I haven't tried a lot of hand lettering but in general when I write or draw as a left handed person, with for example gel pens, I angle my paper and shift my supporting point away from my wrist. Maybe try to think back to how you would write on a white board and see if you use any special techniques that you can use elsewhere as well. 😊

The reason why write so fast is that my hand is too shaky! I know I'm not meant to be an artist, but man, I like hand lettering a lot, even though all of my creations end up looking terrible bc of my innate disadvantage :/

three years late, but I only draw lines fast bECAUSE I'm an artist. It's actually an artist's techniques to draw lines and curves fast to avoid making them shaky, ever see why check marks are almost always smooth than slowly drawing on an underline? The issue is that lettering is different, slowing down can help make it easier to switch from a hard to a soft brush stroke, it's a complete different technique than what's taught for lineart based artwork. As someone who did cartoons and manga art before lettering (and has shaky hands), it's a pain to write slowly.

Thank you so much for your honesty in this video! I feel like this advice also goes for any art videos. I want to be versatile in art and so I'm always watching videos on different art mediums and crafts. I would get caught up in the "I have to have the nice expensive tools like them to make my art better" thinking but I realize it doesn't matter if I don't practice. Something about artist making art with less expensive tools is so much more thrilling and cool! I love that you use both Crayola and Tombo markers :)

Yes, I would just look for anything that is labeled as a marker paper at your arts store OR if you have some kind of print/copy center, you could go there and ask for whatever their smoothest paper is. The goal is just smooth paper, but doesn't necessarily have to be this one! This one is just what's easily available to me where I live :) Hope that helps!

Oh I hear you! I tried lettering as a lefty for a few days because I had so many people asking about it! You guys definitely have an additional challenge but I've heard that the biggest/simplest thing is to just go reallllly slow. Good luck!

I know right! I’m also a lefty and I’ve been practicing for about 3 months but I still get some difficulties :(

I’m a calligraphyst and lettering has been so easy for me, I’m right handed✍🏼but the really difficult time, came when I had to do calligraphy in an Intuous pad with the Intuous Pro Pen😩 it taked a lot of time and practice to make a progress 🖥⌨️🙆🏻‍♀️

This was a really great video! “I will not compare myself to strangers on the internet!” Wow that’s good! And it’s so simple but I think we’ve all done it at least once. Like you said we have no clue how much time they’ve spent on perfecting their craft. Awesome! I needed that refresher!

I love calligraphy and have been wanting to learn it for years now and then finally doing it. I have watched so many videos on calligraphy and they either confuse you or they just don't know how to teach another person and it shows in their videos. You are a gifted and natural teacher. I subscribed instantly after just watching you for a few seconds. Thank you so very much for making the videos and for being such an excellent teacher.

aliyah Yes! Because even with practice, maybe some people won’t make lettering perfect, but obiously and for sure, they’ll make a lot of progress💟✍🏼☑️

Well sorry I happened to think it was a bit funny Because a lot of people will say that practice makes perfect to boost peoples spirits and make them practice more She said progress which is true but that’s not usually what people would say 😐

Curl Gurl Yes! And it’s all fine, just was for you to know the reason😊 Practice makes perfect is a super famous quote, but iS a little difficult to write perfect letters, don’t you think so?☺️

I find calligraphy/lettering a therapeutic hobby. Writing during work is just for the sake of information it holds. but when it comes to lettering, I have to really slow down and control the tension of stroke for every single letter of the word. It sort of reminding me to take life slowly despite the hectic work life.
