Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario
Day 1 - Source Lake to Tanamakoon Lake
Total distance = 3.3 kms
Portages = 3
Portage total distance = 1.6 kms
This was a great little trip we did in Algonquin Provincial Park. We spent 4 nights canoeing this loop, starting at access #7 on Source Lake. Our canoe was rented from Algonquin Outfitters and was a featherlight 16 foot swift Prospector canoe, that we absolutely loved. In this video you see us travel from Source Lake, through AP-11, 2 small unnamed pond lakes and finally into lake Tanamakoon where we spent our first night. We kept this day really short as we knew we had a long drive to get to the park, plus get our canoe rental and park permits before we could even begin.
If your new to backcountry canoe camping, this might be a good route to get your feet wet....perhaps that is a poor choice of words. This may be a good beginner route, as the days are quite short in distance and you are never far from people. However, it really did still have a remote feel to it (which is what we wanted), even though we were never far from Highway 60. The only downside to this route is the amount and length of the portages. When your new to canoe camping, it can be hard to single carry across a portage, which is what we were successfully able to do.
Other videos in the trip series:
Day 2 = • Beginner Canoe Camping...
Day 3 = • Beginner Canoe Camping...
Please remember to wear your life jackets and practice leave no trace, while also following all the park rules so we all can continue to enjoy this gorgeous park.

What type of backpack are you guys using in this video? And how do you like it?

We both have MEC brand packs, the blue one Jess is carrying is very old and heavy at 6lbs, but an absolute tank and really comfy. Alex is carrying the Slogg deluxe and if we had of answered you when you posted your question 7 months ago (oops) we would have told you the bag is amazing, however recently it has begun to fall apart. It's not that old which is beyond disappointing.

Nice island campsite...a beach landing is a luxury for sure. Third times a charm for the bear hang...no problem! And....we were wondering what was in the platypus....oh ...wine (fancy )...we call any alcohol in our platy #campjuice Cheers Colleen and Jonny

Nice video. Thank you for sharing. Quick question. That canoe seat with the hardback, how did that work out for you? I find I can't sit comfortably in a canoe and have to kneel with my butt half on the seat. I was wondering if that made any difference and if I should try it? Thanks again

It is a Woods brand seat from Canadian Tire and it is a great seat, but would not recommend for long distance paddling as we found our arms rubbed on the back of the seat. However, for day trips and fishing it is perfect, it is even adjustable to allow you to lean back.

Very nice guys! Beautiful sunset. Was that the thunderbox in the background of your bear hang segment? On to part 2.

Yes, It was an outhouse style thunder box without a door, very over used and not something you want to visit.
