Great, informative video. What a poised young lady, she appears so relaxed in front of the camera. I always enjoy Jenny'video tutorials and it looks like her daughter is following in her footsteps. It feels like having friends showing you how to do something new. Thanks, Ann
Thank you for making this tutorial! I consider the two of them carrying on a conversation to teach us this technique. I, personally, appreciate the mother taking the roll of "color man." All she is doing is giving answers to questions she thinks a beginner would have. Thanks for taking the time for all this useful information!✂️🤗
It isn't an easy thing to do by putting oneself out there,I have to agree with Tanya on the negative comments about hair and Mom talking. This isn't a video for that anyway.I have to say I really appreciate Jenny for even putting these video's out here. They gave me courage to try new things and she answers my questions and helps me a lot.My daughter lives to far away and my Mother passed 13 years ago so I have no one to help but Jenny.Thank Jenny and your daughter was just fine.
L carter I agree re: Jenny doing these videos! Like you, I focus on the technique they are showing. I used to only make quilts if the pattern was the size I needed and did not have the courage to make changes to meet my needs. Thanks to Jenny's videos, I have gained knowledge and courage to try new techniques, make adjustments to patterns and have even used information to teach demos at my quilt group. And if you really paid attention to "all the interruptions by Mom" they were additional helpful information for the viewer. For Gena Caruthers I "polish" my sewing surface with furniture polish to help it glide and place books around my machine to give me a large, level area for my quilt to rest on while I machine quilt. Hope this helps you.
Thank you for the free motion tutorial. Your daughter is just lovely and she has the making of a good teacher like her mom , be proud. I just love Missouri Star Quilt because of all the tutorials. Thank you Hillary !
I have just recently returned to sewing after a long vacation from this wonderful hobby. I've taken up quilting and am having so much fun. The help I've received from your tutorials is amazing. Anytime I'm stumped, I come to your website, and search for a tutorial. I took some of my work to the local Quilting shop and asked for a critic.....She said I was doing VERY well. Thanks so much for all your help.
Welcome back to quilting, Billie Small! We're thrilled that you are here and trust us to be your guide. We'd love to see your creations! Be sure to share them with us on Facebook! Happy quilting!
Your tutorials are great. I have been wanting to learn how to quilt and your tutorials make it look very easy. Your videos explain it with excellent detail. I've watched several of your videos & now I feel confident enough to try one. Thank you.
I have just done a little one, It's not great but it's a start Thank you so much Hillary and Jenny for making the Tutorial on machine quilting and for Jenny for all the other ones
thank-you so much for these free video's. It makes it easier when you can watch someone do it up close. I really enjoyed watching this and the machine binding one.
I am so excited to try this effect. I just started quilting and have "almost" finished 3... just wasn't sure what to do next... this is perfect!!! Thank you for sharing :) Great JOB!!
Thank you so much! I am so excited to start quilting on my machine! Until now, I have used my mom's long arm machine, but she lives in New York now, so it's not exactly convenient. I have an old Necchi machine at home that I absolutely love! I just need to figure out how to drop the feed dogs. Thanks for the wonderful tutorial!!! Great job!
If it is an old machine it should have a knob on top of the machine - if you press on the inside part of the knob it will pop up...and your feeddogs should lower . At one time it was for darning by machine try it To get the feeddogs back push that center all the way back down
I have finally learned how to free motion quilt!! I have watched so many videos but none were as complete as this one. The information was helpful from both. I just wish mom would stop interrupting her daughter in the middle of her sentence. Hillary's bangs were constantly hanging in her face. She's a beautiful girl so showing her face would be appreciated.
Thanks for the tutorial. Its amazing to see how we learn from our children sometimes. Well, my ask is - can you talk about kind of batting to choose. I chose 100% cotton(organic) it left a lot of lint in my bobbin. Should I have taken any precaution? Please educate about the batting to choose.
I couldn't make out the name of the fabric/designer she was working with for the baby changing mat. It was lovely. Would love to know artist. Also, I wasn't sure if there was a need to back stitch when starting and stopping free motion quilting. I don't think it was mentioned but how do you keep it from unraveling at start/stop?!? Thanks😊
I just finished the top of a photo memory quilt and was wondering what to do about the quilting around the photos since I obviously don't want to quilt on the photos? Would the basting spray hold well enough to solve this issue or would it wear off or wash away if laundered?
It's always wise to have plenty of your Top thread & Bobbin thread available and on hand before beginning any FM quilting! Especially back up of bobbin thread ready to replace as it can run out faster before FM quilting is completed. When thread run happens, locate the point on your piece where the thread ended and when restarting make that your start again point with a secure lock stitch and then proceed from there on. Hope this helps. :)
Emilie......that mother is Jenny Doan. This her daughters first tutorial and she is trying to help her with what she might leave out. It's mother daughter time, a tutorial all together.
kcashatt51, I so get what you are saying, but truely, as wonderful as Jenny is, she is "hovering" WAY too much. I am surprised that her daughter did so well, nervous as I am sure she was. And she is obviously quite skilled in her own right.
Emilie LaFave I agree. Mom, I know that you were trying to help but I get the feeling that your daughter is a very capable young woman. The constant interruptions were distracting to me.
Jenny (aka "Mother") was asking exactly the right questions in order to prompt Hillary to include information she may leave out (or may have already skipped over!) She wasn't interrupting to show off, but to guide, just as a mother should do!
Great instruction....your daughters bangs drove me nuts as she had to keep moving them from her eyes. Would of been rated a ten if she had just secured them.
Sally Semrau it distracted me that she wouldn't move them from her eyes.. People aren't getting it & are calling everyone rude or telling the girl "don't pin them back just be yourself".. No, thats not being a true fan, friend, or supporter.. Trust me when she was looking at her mother talking & her bangs were down over her whole face. Her mother thought the same thing.. Its just unprofessional & I don't mean that mean at all. I don't even mean it towards the girl in tje video. I mean it for the ppl telling her not to worry about it & that ppl who mentioned it are rude.. Would you go to a job interview with your bangs down over your face, would you go to court before a judge with ur bangs down over ur face?...no & if you would then you're unprofessional & the judge or whoever it is is going to feel disrespected. The video was great. I wish my mother & i were able to do stuff like this together... Idk the ppl who mentioned the bangs in a nice way...I just don't see anytjing wrong with that. Thier just trying to be helpful.. Now the ones who were being rude about it bc all they do is watch videos to pick ppl apart...now they are 100% in the wrong & I can't stand ppl like that.. This video is actually my favorite so far on the free motion sewing & ive watched ALOT.. I don't believe everyone was trying to be rude, just helpful..
Hillary has a real talent with instruction. She is clear and easy to follow. I love that it's not "polished". Like her Mom, they seem so real that anyone can do it! Instead of getting caught up with perfection (which keeps you from going forward), they seem relaxed and fun. This encourages me to take a risk and go forward with learning a new skill.
Isn't it just amazing that this funny little tutorial has been seen 2,554705 times? I love it. I have watched it a couple times. The first time I felt frustrated with the interactions ( probably mother daughter stuff of my own), but on second viewing I am really taken by the respectful way in which mother and daughter communicate in an effort to help people like me learn how to quilt. Thank you Jenny and Hilary! Happy New Year and congrats on a very successful and enduring post.
I agree. I am just starting making be quilts and can't wait to to be start in my be second. My first turned out maybe in a be B+. Next will be better. Thanks for these ladies be both are GREAT
Just a Reminder , These Video's are an Awesome , FREE Class!!!! Did I mention they are FREE?? How Dare some of you Pick at how they were presented. The computer makes it so easy to say what ever you like. I'm sure you wouldn't say those things to someone if you were standing in front of them. How insensitive!!! Jenny and Family, I love All Your Videos, and your shop!!! Thank you for what you do for the world of quilting. I bless the day I found your site!! THANK YOU THANK YOU. :)
If someone has tips or observations to add to any situation or conversation - it hurts no one who has the ability to take objective criticism in the light it should be taken...including that which comes across as sounding like a bit of moral superiority on other's observations/comments. There was nothing crass or outright rude in anyone's comment...I sensed no ill-will. Perhaps (from someone who may be used to being coddled or who likes to be told only good things) they may/can sound a little harsh, abrasive or blunt, but still... they were words, information...nothing more...nothing less. *You have to be able to set aside any emotion or projection of other's and learn from an observer to do this though* What I took away (aside from a great tutorial on machine quilting) was that in something that takes great preparation (quilting or making tutorial videos) if you can try to eliminate all sources of distractions *evidenced by hair and interruption comments* the more focused your viewers will be on what it is that you are trying to teach them. This can be a great learning moment for those who are actually able/willing to learn from not only supporters & fans, but their critics as well. You'll learn a lot less if you live only inside an echo chamber of what you want to hear vs what you may need to hear. It's all in perspective.
Some people can be so rude. I think the mother and daughter did an excellent job of the video and obviously they enjoy doing it together so I don't see anything wrong with their presentation.
Wow, this is the first tutorial I have watched that actually told you how to set up your machine. They usually just start showing you the quilting part. I have never tried this but I intend to after watching this. Those that keep complaining about the bangs evidently wasn't interested in the quilting. Jenny is a great teacher and her daughter has lots of years to learn. The best thing is to find positive things instead of negative. Jenny you and Hillary did an awesome job. Love your tutorials.
I agree absolutely. Before this ... I was so afraid to try myself. Thank you so much!!! Excellent advice, great clarity!! Please do more videos with your Mom!!! Thank you!
why would you guys make comments on her bangs? get more professional? cut the bangs? its distracting? i never noticed her bangs. she is really good at giving a tutorial on how to free motion quilt.
Everyone is so grumpy about Hillary's hair. I like the way it looks. I wear mine like that only my bangs go past my chin and cover half of my face lol. I think she did a great job show us how to machine quilt. I'm assuming Hillary is close to my age (24) and I'm always happy to see other people around my age doing stuff like this. I grew up watching my grandmother quilt and sew and even knit and crochet, and I always loved trying on my own. I'm actually pregnant with my second baby, I came across a baby quilt made by you guys in search of making my own for my baby girl, and I ended up sitting here all day watching all the things you made! Now I want to make pouches and quilts and all sorts of other stuff!
Terry Dee I'm not sure it's really a problem to her. :) After all I can see just fine though my bangs and they are longer than hers. Just be happy and enjoy how awesome she is.
+Terry Dee Let me explain something that, clearly, nobody has before: It's none of your business. It isn't affecting your life. It isn't impeding you living your life as you see fit. Therefore, allow me to repeat: IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. If you don't like the video, just keep your mouth shut (fingers off the keyboard) and move on. The rest of us aren't ignorant little hillbillies and don't want to be distracted by your vitriol on a QUILTING video.
Love the video! Love the mother/daughter interaction! The smiles are radiant! Please try and ignore the neggies (my abbreviation for negative type people) Your daughter is darling, wish I could be as close to my daughter. The neggies can go to another tutorial offered by someone else that don't have bangs, but I will venture to say that they won't get the awesome instruction and techniques they will find with Missouri Quilt Co. Some people just can't help themselves, they just have to be ugly. For me....thank you so very much for all the time you have spent helping us!
Hilary's hairstyle is a cute look for young girls ! I loved the hair, loved Hilary, loved the video and could only say thank you over and over for all the many videos. I have learned more about quilting from Missouri Star than anywhere else. And your website is the best. Ignore rude comments. Your are a great source for quilters. Thank you...
I am so happy to have Jenny to depend on for all my quilting questions and I personally appreciated this video with her daughter because it was refreshing to see the two of them working together.
You both are good teachers! You look like you have allot of fun! I am just learning to quilt, you have helped me allot. Shown me how fun and relaxing quilting can be!
Guess I am really late to this party, but I found this tutorial the best. Have bee afraid to free motion quilt until I saw how easy you gals have made it. Thanks
This was a very helpful video, but slightly irritating to watch due to Mum’s (Jenny’s) continual interruptions. I thought Hillary was doing very well & would have explained all the info without all the ‘prompting’. There were about 20-30 interruptions which made listening to Hillary’s explanations more challenging.
I enjoyed this tutorial very much --- I always love yours! I am ready to begin practicing free motion quilting, but have a question. For this I have been told to buy a walking foot (I did!), a 1/4" quilting foot (I did!) and a foot like your daughter recommends -- I have that one now, too! What is the difference of these 3 feet? What are the different uses for these 3 feet? Or is it simply a personal preference? Help! Thanks - Cindy
Hopefully someone has helped you with this question by now, but for those just new. The 1/4 inch foot is for accurate piecing, the walking foot is for straight quilting through the sandwich layers and the free motion foot allows you to do quilting designs like the girls are demonstrating.
I always love your tutorials I have never done a video, and no one is perfect . You are easy to follow. I watch one of your tutorials every night, sometimes I watch them over and over. I have sewn all my life but it is more fun with your tips I just wish my sweet Mother was here to enjoy this with me. she. would have loved you
To anyone looking to simplify your quilt planning (and you can easily use Leila's advise while using this app I just released ‘Quilter’, an iOS app to help layout/design/ and calculate yard requirements for quilts that I worked really hard on. I am trying to get some good feedback on how to make it a really useful quilting tool! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I hope it makes quilt design a less time consuming process so that you can dive right into the actual quilting! facebook.com/Quiltler/ Thanks for taking a look! Chris
What charm pack was used again? I couldn't quite understand the name of the designer and the particular charm pack. I'll be making my first baby quilt soon and LOVE the one she has for the changing pad! Great video also! I'm saddened by the immaturity of all the irrelevant comments as well. SMH
No one ever answered your question, and maybe it's too late for your project, but she said Aneela Hoey (designer) and I believe she said "Sherbet Tips" - Not sure about that.
I love that you showed basic Free Motion Quilting. It is important for people new to it to know they can break the "rules" and that practice, practice, practice will make them feel more confident and their FMQ will improve!
Your "quilt as you go" video was the first I watched! And now, three weeks later, I'm considering free motion quilting my first jelly roll quilt. So excited, thank you for the AMAZING videos.
If would be easier to follow if mama had backed off completely- completely! Have some confidence in your daughter mama, she did great- don't steal her thunder!
Thank you so much for the tutorial.I enjoy your sweet sense of humor and the close ups(that really helps me).Keep up the good work.Your daughter has your wonderful smile.
Everyone leave mother alone. She is use to doing these teaching type things. Her interruptions are very helpful as the daughter would sometimes assume that we all know the little tips.
Too many grumpy old farts in the comments section. Her hair has absolutely nothing to do with her skill and the way the demonstration was executed; it didn't get in the way of the tutorial even slightly and this is clear as you're still saying "I still enjoyed the video". Focus on the reason why you're here and what you learned instead of how a young woman chooses to wear her hair. This isn't the 1940s, for crying out loud!
Thank you for this easy free motion video that explains everything I wanted to know in easy to understand steps. I have about 15 quilt tops waiting to be quilted. I have hand quilted, but never found instructions that didn't scare me a little, and I didn't want to ruin my beautiful quilt tops. Hillary has given me the courage to try the free motion.
Finally! I've watched several tutorials on free motion quilting and still come up with "eyelashes." Adjusted the tension as Hillary suggested and it came out great! Thank you Hillary.
I recently began quilting this summer. My 89 year old dad was diagnosed with cancer and I spent this summer as his caregiver so I was looking for something to keep me busy. I love this tutorial as well as all the others from Missouri Star and thank you for doing them. This is how I learned to quilt. I agree with the previous post. I do not respond to videos that I watch, but felt it necessary this time. People need to remember that it is a teaching video not a fashion show. The video did exactly what it was supposed to, taught us to free motion quilt.
I do not understand picking on someone about their looks, hair or clothes. The young lady is fine as she is. She was sharing knowledge with you and you feel it necessary to pick her apart. I think it shows where her heart is and where yours is.
Sorry ladies, but all I could do was concentrate on her messy hair. I have to view the video over again to get something out of it. Being professional is also looking the part.
Bonnie Duncan I agree and iv never commented online anything before now but I just need to now. If a person is distracted so much then look for a different video there are sooo many out there. There’s NO need to comment about it or complain. If you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all.
Appreciate the video but if the daughter is going to do the demonstration the Mother needs to shut up so we can hear the daughter talk. Rudely keeps interrupting her.
This is so fantastic! Thank you so much for posting and inviting your daughter to join :) I love the look of the free motion quilting, can't wait to try!!
I think the video was awesome......the bangs however weren't a part of the video, the video was to teach how to do free motion quilting, this wasn't a hair fashion video. Hillary seems to be sweet, lovely, and the bangs shouldn't be an issue here. Thanks, I learned a lot by watching the tutorial.....jenny you and your family are doing an awesome job !
She’s such a mom helping her daughter to do the tutorial! LOL! Love the daughters attitude because she is so gracious to her momma though she is hovering over her! 🥰💜
What a great tutorial. After a few years of straight lines I'm ready! Thank you both. Jenny did a great job of pretending to be a newbie with insightful questions, beginners mind. And Hilary, so poised, you make it look so easy with great tips.
Thank you so much for making this video. I've just finished my first big quilting project (it's a 62" x 62" wall hanging for my bedroom) and was feeling quite overwhelmed about quilting it altogether. The basting spray alone will be such a time saver, but now I'm looking forward to practicing the stippling stitch so I can use it on my quilt. My quilt has a strong geometric pattern through it so I think the stippling will soften the look a bit and add a lot of character to the finished piece. Again, thank you!
Thank you so much! This video was great. I had never seen stippling actually being done before, and you make it look so easy! I know it isn't though! You make excellent partners.
Thanks for the great video! I finished my first large (crib-sized) free motion quilt project yesterday and I was so frustrated at all of the imperfections. A few times I almost ripped it all out. But I kept going and the more I went the easier it got. Thank you, Hillary, for your gentle reassurance and reminder that yes there are going to be mistakes but nobody is going to notice them! Also good demo on the basting spray - I'm adding that to my shopping list next time I'm at the fabric store. Keep up the good work ladies!
Hi Jenny, The interaction between you and your daughter is wonderful! It is so nice to see you have instilled the love of quilting to a new generation... what a Iovely legacy. I found myself wondering if it would be possible to do this stipple free form quilting on the quilt as you go quilt you made that was so easy? Looks like it might be fun especially on the 4 inch stripes and a nice counter point to the straight lines. :)
Awesome video ladies, thank you! Despite being an experienced quilter, its been many years since I completed a quilt on my "normal" sewing machine, so I am nervous. All these tips have helped so much! Thanks!
Thank you Jenny and Hillary! I've sewn crafts and such, off and on for 40 plus years, and other than making mini quilt patches for my jeans in the 60's (ha) I've never quilted before. My 30 year old machine pooped out last week, and my new fangled machine is full of marvelous surprises that got me searching thru youtube. After watching several helpful Missouri Star videos I decided to attempt a crazy scrap baby changing mat (Thanks for idea Hillary) In one afternoon I made an adorable 'lil mini quilt, patched, quilted and hand bound. My 3 diaper wearing grandkids are visiting next month, perfect! (this actually has nothing to do w/ free motion but wanted to thank you!) I am ready to move up to a baby quilt!!!
What a wonderful tutors you and your daughter make. I have been piecing for years but seldom quilt as my arthritis is so bad, now I will machine quilt. FYI your daughter is lovely and her hair was just fine, just as the young ones wear it now, but it did not bother me at all.
Phyllis: I so agree. I'm older myself and you are so right. We both recognize that the younger girls do wear their hair this way now, even though it's two years since you typed your comment they still are wearing it this way! I appreciate your comment. Jenny and Hillary are both lovely. I was teaching my young daughter to sew and was so enjoying it but I became very ill and she just doesn't feel comfortable around me anymore. I so love watching this mom and daughter together, expert and next generation expert in her own right together laughing and sharing. So grateful I found this channel. :)
Wow now this is a great video ! Even 9 yrs later lol this is better than any of the new but my tool videos today ! I love your daily deals ! And I love your videos ! Your girls a natural on teaching ! Man I wished I lived closer ! I’d love to take classes ! Ty ladies !
