DIY Solar Power with Will Prowse I was wondering if you could help me. I want to put in a solar power system in my travel trailer. I have pretty much everything except the panels,inverter and batteries. My main goal is to primarily power my 13500 btu AC during the summer. The panels I want are 4 315 Watt panels. I am going to get 5 100ah Agm batteries and a 4kw inverter. I only need to run my ac 6 hours. Is what I have enough? I bought that ats switch you recommended. If what I have is enough to recharge my batteries? Do I just put my panels in parallel? The output voltage is 33 volts and 9.4 amps. Optimal of course. I have a MPPT 60 amp charger. Any and all help would be appreciated. I suspect for the first couple hours I will have about a 21 amp draw. After the temperature is stable. It will only turn on to maintain the temperature. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time ?

Is there another system like this you would recommend? I like that the inverter and charger controller are in one but the 12v version is sold out. I already have rooftop solar on my home, I was planning on connecting this to my ac/grid to charge an emergency power bank...the solar input would only be used in a bug out situation with portable panels.

I'm traveling around southern Africa in a caravan and often don't have power or the power companies just cut the power for 9 hours every day in South Africa. You've given me the confidence to go off and buy the equipment tomorrow and install a 1500 watt 100AH lithium battery system with solar panel input myself - I'm very happy, very excited - looking forward to tomorrow, thanks again. 😁

I just purchased this unit few days ago. It arrived yesterday, Friday. I installed it for my off grid setup. I used the rich solar 20a mppt charge controller and a 100ah lithium ion battery before this upgrade. As of now I am just utilizing 3 - 100w harbor freight solar panels from my old setup. I'm still learning as I go. I plan upgrade the the panels in future. Your book has been a great help to understanding how solar power works. Thanks again.

MOST EXCELLENT ! Talk about KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) . About 2+ years ago I started watching several of your vid's and then got paralysis by analysis, so I just built a simple Renogy 100 watt system to just charge my batteries. About a month ago I decided to take the next step and look at adding another solar panel and inverter. My 110 needs are very simple. This makes a lot more sense for me and a very small system . Couple of hints ;) 1. It would be nice to note that different countries use different colours for AC wires. So anyone making the connection should verify this before connecting or they can damage or burn down something. 2. When making the connection it is good to pull slightly every wire after tightening the screw. As sometimes the terminals can be tricky and the wire stay lose resulting sparkling, heat and fire. If the wire moves then pull it out, unscrew/open the terminal and reinsert the wire.

Dear Will, I would be really interested to learn how these off-grid hybrid inverters do their ATS automatic transfer switching from solar and grid to batteries and the local 240/110 Volt AC outlet. Perhaps you could do a teardown or experiment pulling out breakers etc and show what happens ? I am very grateful for your introduction to electricity and solar videos which I have recommended to many friends.

Hi Yohan, Good question. I just saw this video. I guess I would need to build another box that doesn't have an inverter. 12 volt outputs and usb outputs. Is that what you did?

Great content. Would be great if you also make the info and products available for other markets since it will vary the specification from what is the standard in US. Maybe you could also publish your videos saying how it works in Europe and find the products adapted for here(and other parts of the world), or collaborate with local channels with same content to make your ideas and products available wildly. Thanks and all the best

I have installed a couple of these inverters and they easily get fried with surge from lightning. You might need to install an SPD with proper earthing for this inverter.

Ambulances hang chains that touch the ground
@WillProwse
@WillProwse 5 лет назад
@@rolliebca you can't. No such true Earth ground on mobile system. Grounding is necessary mainly when attached to grid. Not possible to dissipate excess charge through vehicle chassis. You need true Earth ground.

IDK where TheRobb573 is but i have never worked on an ambulance that had a chain that touched the ground for the electrical system. been in fire and EMS for over 20 years and worked on more ambulances than i can count.

Wow! Maybe I really can do this on my own.?.? I have a question Will; I've watched a lot of van lifers express how 12V is better than 24V but I haven't really understood why. Since you're the pro, I want to ask you how to choose. If I use my computer a lot, charge my phone, watch movies on a DVD/BlueRay and I want all electrical in my future van (meaning no gas, propane, lpg etc.), what do you feel is the best for me? So appreciate your input and all the videos you do to help us all. Thanks for your enthusiasm and kindness as well.

I am building my system for my cabin, totally off the grid. I got a great deal on panels but could only get 3 260 watt 24 volt 8.5 amp panels. Can i connect these in series with this all in one system or do i need one more panel to make it work?

Will, if you go to the 2:00 mark you can see a 3rd mounting screw hole under that 2 wire plug by the circuit board. you would probably have to unplug that wire to use it but it is there.

Your video is very informative but I have a few questions: I like the idea of the all in one system that makes it pretty easy to make up. However, my solar panels each have micro inverters. What kind of controller would I use to plumb the solar output A/C current directly to some sort of controller that would also charge batteries and would switch everything over if and when I lose power.

FYI... You show mounting to the wall/board at the two screw mount points at the top and that a disadvantage is the inability to secure the bottom. However, there is actually a third screw hole under the detachable cover in the bottom area of the unit noted in the user manual under "Mounting the Unit". Thanks for all the information you provide, looking forward to setting up a 400W array with a couple SOK batteries and this unit to serve as backup power for my business main server rack.

Hey Will, thanks for the videos! I am building a small van, and I really like this option. I am thinking either 12v or 24v. One thing is missing for me. Shore power, solar ... is there a way to charge off of your vehicle?

I'm in the same boat as you. I had planned on connecting my leisure battery to the split charge relay to charge whilst driving but also to this type of system to charge from solar when I can. I had planned to use a LiFePo4 battery but will advised against charging lithium off split charge as it will burn out the alternator, so now I'm thinking of fitting an mpp unit, a split charge relay and using an AGM battery.

240 volt , 2 pole 40 to 80 amp breaker, red and black wires to circuit, ground to ground terminal , white ( neutral wire) to neutral bus in ac panel. Controller should automatically sense another source coming from generator when PV is listed as main. Double check the grounding though.

Hi Will I've used Voltronic Inverters for years (great product). I started with one 5Kva now have 2 x 5KVa in Parallel mode. I'm trying to reduce overnight battery drain (quiescent current) I've diverted all small parasitic loads to a 48 to 12v DC to DC converter. I've now have acquired a used 1Kva (Voltronic) inverter, on 2 x 100 AH L/A Battries) to run my home at night (Comms, security, etc.) It has a far lower current drain for small loads. I want the 2 x 5Kva to go into standby mode with no load connected at all (2/3 w). Even if I disconnect all loads, the fans still run and they draw power (250w) Any Ideas how to force this Standby mode >10w? Great channel :)

I have the 5K watt 48V 230V model and it does have a foot on the bottom left corner which you can screw down to the back board. As instructions warn against screwing the unit down onto a flammable material, I used 2 inch spacers (metal water pipe selves), to suspend it off of my backboard.

I have a Jayco 166 FBS with a 190 watt panel and a single 12v battery. It also comes with a 120v micro fridge. I plugged the fridge into a cheap 750/1500 MSW inverter and it worked fine and seemed to pull about 50 watts. I did not test it overnight because I didn't want to take the chance of drawing the battery under 50% which might damage it.

It's already really small, and the form factor is smaller than having a bunch of individual parts. You probably can't find something more compact.
