Since I found these lessons I've been practicing at least half hour 45 minutes a day (minus a day or two), since I started, about 3 and 1/2 weeks ago. I'm 44 years old, I had never really been able to play any instrument before then. Since I found these lessons, I've gained an increased sense of self-worth. After I learned the D chord, I cried real tears of joy that I actually could play an instrument. Maybe not well, yet, but obviously that comes with practice. Plus, it's been a good therapy-- recently I had to bury one of my dogs. Learning how to play has given me some solace. Thank you for posting these videos. you've helped a sad sack find his way closer to the light.
Love the fact that you keep saying "five minutes a day for two months" and we will be "soaring." In every beginner video you say this, and it's so encouraging, because it's so easy to get discouraged when you're first learning. I began learning guitar about 10 years ago, and got discouraged soon after. If you were teaching me, I would have continued, and probably have been a pro by now.
Yup... I became discouraged yesterday and told myself I'd never play guitar again because I couldn't get a cord... well here I am, playing guitar 😂 marty is amazing.

Yes i agree this is great. But i can not get my fingers and tips to not touch other strings. Little frustrating on that issue. But the videos are awesome
@@gerrykaption7243 that is a big thing that I figured out as I was learning. Practice makes perfect. All about that dexterity. My father has massive sausage fingers and can shred like no other
Something about the words you choose and how you talk just gives me hope that I will one day be great, I’ve just started a week ago and these videos have shown me just how much practice helps. 5 minutes a day always gets me in the mood for an hour a day

I’ve only been playing for 4 days but these lessons have been so helpful and easy to follow, I feel like a natural. I’ve always gotten discouraged that I wasn’t picking up guitar right away and quit - not this time. I really appreciate the work you put into these lessons. You’re a wonderful teacher! Hi Marty and ALL guitars enthusiasts! I’m retired and decided I wanted to cross one off the bucket list and learn to play. I purchased my Yamaha FSX800C for Christmas 2023 then I found YOU! I really enjoy your teaching method, your sense of humor & your encouraging words! I like yourself have small hands with sausage fingers and find it difficult to make my fingers stretch and lay down “clean” chords. But 5 minutes a day turns into an hour and I’m having a love affair with my guitar! So many times I wanted to quit because my fingers would KILL other strings but I’ve kept at it and it gets better & better with each passing day! Thanks Marty, you’re an exceptional teacher who is making my journey worthwhile & fun!
2 weeks in around an hour a day I have impressed so many people. I enjoy the way you teach. Other videos I have watched the person spends a lot of time talking about themselves. You teach the actual way. I have made insane progress!
@@pikey4life yeah, I know how you feel. i've been practicing for a month now and i've got some pretty nice calluses so my fingers hurt less, but i still suck. i'm not giving up anytime soon though
Been practicing for 10 days now. Only been watching your videos. I've got all the chords down up till this point. And I have this one for the most part. Sometimes my fingers don't want to stretch all the way. Seriously, if I had you as a teacher when my Dad wanted me to learn 25 years ago, there's no telling where I'd be. And I have noticed each subsequent video has less views than the previous one. Practice makes perfect. Believe me. 25 years ago, I didn't care. I never thought I'd be making any sounds on a guitar. Now I know how to play all the chords you've taught so far. It's crazy. I've been reluctant to go to F, but I know I have to.
three weeks in and i’m finding so much joy and solace in guitar. i played piano in childhood but string instruments never made much sense to me and i wasn’t drawn in… im shocked and so happy to be discovering a love for this instrument. thank you marty, for this down to earth and informative introduction to guitar ❤️
Just over two months in. Just missing this chord for now. Learned F before C, and now coming back to C. Not sure why I found C so hard to remember. Marty is an amazing teacher. Concise, repetitive, reinforcing, and reassuring. Just a phenomenal teacher.
I thought learning the G chord was hard. I just tried this one yesterday and I was like "wtf how are my fingers supposed to stretch that far?!" I'll be practicing this one A LOT!

So my dad had to stop playing guitar because of his arthritis and he ended up giving me his a few weeks ago. I’ve been taking it super slow practicing with these beginner videos and having a blast. Then today I was talking to my dad about my progress and found out that he’s also a fan of your channel and learned a lot from you. Thanks for making guitar fun and easy for both of us!
It's great to read everyone's comments. I picked up the guitar b/c my 11 yr old kid wanted one, then just wasn't that into it. I've now purchased my own (as his suffered a lifted neck) and I'm trying to use quarantine time to learn as much as I can from Marty. Good to know there are so many of us on here. :-)
so ironic that the Guitar Tricks ad plays before every one of your videos - they slate youtube guitar teachers but you are LITERALLY. the example of an amazing, free guitar tutor. I already play piano, flute and sax but your guitar lessons have taught me so much :)
I literally bought a guitar 5 days ago, each day I run through 1-however far I've gotten comfortable. Day 5 I am here, starting this video, and comfortable to play around people. I'm blown away by how much I've learned already; I just want to say thank you Marty! You are making this journey an absolute joy.
First day in (12/24/21) was given a guitar by one of my local music artists (and really good friend) as a Christmas gift, he's been one of my idols since he began playing, I had thought about maybe wanting to get one a week prior to this and then I get surprised with one out of the blue so I took it as a sign. 5 of your lessons later and I'm already loving it. Not only are you one of the best teachers that I've ever learned from, it's simple, the way you teach it makes it easy to remember and you're just a great guy to listen to. I'll try to keep this comment posted on my progress and hopefully it'll keep someone else motivated!

I took beginner guitar lessons years ago, but playing mary had a little lamb and frere jaque just never got my interest so I gave it up for almost 20 years. You've made this interesting for me again and it is a pleasure learning these basic chords on my way to playing real music again. Thank you.

Today practice was more fun, because at the beginning i was moreso just randomly playing than practicing really. Just trying which chord progressions sound nice. And also it has been a few days since i've been able to play.

You have no idea what a difference this makes. I just started learning guitar this week and I love it. I do at least one lesson a day and then play everything I've learned before I go to bed. It's a struggle getting the right fingerings at first but once you keep at it gets so much easier. Thank you so much for these lessons. They're so fun anI enjoy learning because of this. Marty, I'm really enjoying your approach. I decided to pick the electric guitar back up after a 45 year break. I played from 1972-78 in middle and high school - lots of Aerosmith! I recently got diagnosed with bone marrow cancer and will be in the hospital in isolation for 3-6 weeks for a bone marrow transplant....figured this would be an awesome time to relearn - this time with a Pink Floyd focus! when you started playing knockin on heavens door with just the c, g and d chords i thought wow i am so close to playing some great songs. i've been following these lessons for 2 days since i started. i didnt think i'd be able to ever learn chords but you've made them so easy thank you!

I've been taking your advice and doing 5 minutes per day (more like 30-45 once I get started, let's be honest) and it's changed the way I view learning to play guitar. The first time I tried to learn to play I made myself miserable. Thanks for inspiring me!
I just started playing guitar about 3 weeks ago and I'm loving Marty's lessons, but sometimes I feel pretty frustrated. On some of the easier chords (like E minor, A, A sus 2....even G), I can find my fingering with no problems. But on certain chords....specifically D and especially C, I have all kinds of issues trying to find the proper strings and frets. If I go super slow, it's not really an issue, but if I try and move quickly from any chord to the C chord, it just becomes a major mess. I miss strings and/or frets, I get dead strings.....it's terrible. I feel like I'm doing something wrong.....just not getting it no matter how much I practice it.
This may help others trying to get chords down. Do hand exercises, things like stretches and consider buying a hand exerciser kit. Exercises can help get your hands ready for awkward positions and stretching your fingers. Another thing is to find a song you like with the chords you're learning and play and sing along. You'll be more motivated to get it when you're trying to play a song. I'm just starting out and these things are helping me. Above all, be patient and practice every day, even if it's just for 10 or 15 minutes. Work on one chord intensively and move on to others once you get them down. Hope this helps. Stay with it and remember that nothing good comes easy.
Can I just say I only started playing last Thursday after being given the last Guitar my uncle bought before he passed away. I started these tutorials as a guide and I am loving this so much! Thank you so much, I am having a blast!

I am 73 years old and my nephew just surprised me with a guitar. Marty you have taught me some great reviews. I have not played in about 35 years. So much to learnt the F and C cord is giving me a problem. Practice practice. The fingers are not as good as they used to be. Marty. Thanks for all your help.
Learning these first few chords and how to transition from one to another with anchor fingers has given me encouragement. Marty, you are a great teacher and are very relatable. Small hands are a challenge for me, and I've had to adapt on the G chord and use my pinky instead of my ring finger. Also, the D chord is difficult for me and I continue to frequently mute the high e string with my ring finger. My troublesome ring finger just doesn't want to bend enough. Surprisingly, I have had less trouble with the C chord than the G and D. Anyway, I'm trying to persevere and not get too discouraged. I recently read a funny comment by someone on a guitar blog. It was something like this: "You are asking your fingers to do things they don't want to do. Don't let them win!"
i just started (43 year old classically trained pianist!) and never I MEAN EVER thought i could play the guitar. lol. my fingers are purple and i'm frustrated but i can play chords now!! just need to stick with it :/ marty, you're the ONLY teacher on youtube i feel like i connect with (even though we've never met) is that weird!? :D thank you so much for these amazing free lessons!

At 63 I thought it was an impossible dream to return to playing guitar. I took lessons for about a year in junior high school... and I wanted to do it again but now 50 years later? These lessons by Marty have made it possible. I remember the chords and the muscle memory is coming back. He really makes this easy by taking it one or two chords at a time. I watch this on RU-vid TV so I can play along in my living room. Thanks Marty...
Hey, Marty. I finally bought my first guitar as a 30th birthday present to myself a couple of weeks back. I wanted to start playing 15 years ago, but back then my parents insisted on buying me a keyboard instead. I've been following your beginner lessons over the past few days and I couldn't be happier with how much I feel like I've progressed over such a short time. You make learning the guitar so fun and easy! Also, thanks as well for helping keep people like me sane while stuck at home because of COVID-19 -- being able to learn a new skill makes life under quarantine much easier to bear. Recently picked up a guitar after not playing one in at least 15 years, when I was a teenager. Wanted to learn right and stumbled into your lessons here and I’m loving them. I’ve been steadily practicing and I have made significant progress. Your videos are easy to digest, the explain things well and you do a good job of showing us just what we will be able to do once we master these chords. Keep it up man, this has helped a lot.
On day 5 so far. Really really enjoying these lessons. I feel like I'm actually learning how to play for once. Been trying to put in about 20 mins/day. Fingers are hurting, but it doesn't bother me much. Glad to be making progress.
i've been practicing with the chords.. its now faster . i can play and chords change with less error than ever. still some issues with D major. would like to continue your lessons
These beginner videos are really helping me I've tried to learn to play guitar 2 or 3 times before in my life and it never really stuck but when I watch these videos it feels like I'm making magic happen

I almost cried when you said to lay the ring finger first WHO KNEW IT WOULD MAKE SUCH A DIFFERENCE 😭 I am one of those who would lay the pointer finger first & your tip made all the difference. I used to find it so hard to play it correctly. THANK YOU!!!
5:58 I had been anchoring with the index finger for the last 2 minutes. I immediately found that yes, it is so much easier/quicker to start with the ring finger
