Think about his brother Jimmy. He was the musician in the family before SRV came along and became the GOAT. Poor Jimmy, but yea for all of us to get to witness this talent. And not that Jimmy isn’t great as well.

I have been SRV fan for twenty- five years. And Stevie Ray Vaughan and BB King we’re-my I first introduction to blues music I got interested in both of them exact same time.When I was 16 years old and at the time And learned a bit later that he died six years before in a plane crash he was such amazing gifted guitar player and singer. Every time I listen to his music I wonder what could of accomplished if he still alive today. He been gone for 31 years.But I have a feeling it’s going to Inspire many guitarist and many more years to come and generations to come.

So many reactors I’ve seen have to stand up and try to walk it off in the middle of the video. The disbelief is hilarious. Mouth open, staring into the camera saying nothing and looking for an explanation of what they are seeing and hearing. Ha ha! It’s between him and RUSH for blowing Tubers minds! Pure joy!

And to think, he must have had a similar moment listening to his heroes. And it didn't make him go "I can't do that". It made him go "I'm gonna do that". And even if you don't have his talent, it is still good to try to follow in his footsteps.

Amazingly whether on purpose or by accident, his guitar tone matches his voice. Therefore in between singing , his guitar acts as a second voice to continue telling the story without him having to say a word. It’s incredible.

It still tears me up I never got to see him live. I saw Buddy Guy open for BB King maybe almost 20 years ago now, part of Buddy’s show was talking about people he’d played with and playing a little bit of their music. He spent a good deal of time talking about Stevie and what he had done to elevate the blues in his short time. Buddy’s love for the man was palpable.

Little Wing.. SRV was Heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix. Third Stone from the Sun is also Stellar. Live versions of course. And if you want some smooth SRV, Riviera Paradise or Lenny. So much of a catalog yet...so Little. We Loved him Here but the Light loved him more...and took Him back. Rest Easy my Friend.

That was a club in downtown Dallas called The Cave. My sister went there and saw him. She talked about him a lot. I was so jealous cuz I wanted to go. Later I brought it up to Stevie and he couldn’t believe anyone knew of it still.

I don't know whose version I prefer, his or Jimi's. I mean they are bad ass versions of the song.

Listen to Danny Gatton play Sleepwalk all the way through in a bar in DC. Then find him playing anything else that he did and you will be blown away. Sometime online they cut the second half of sleepwalk off so make sure you hear the whole thing. Also listen to Roy Buchannon, Albert Lee, Vince Gill, Glen Campbell.

He ripped a 12-string acoustic on MTV's unplugged too. His hands were insanely strong.

No amount of practice will make you a truly exceptional musician you are born with it. you could practice for 100yrs and be technically brilliant but creativity can't be practiced.

Regarding the necks he used, what you said isn't actually true. SRV always used standard Strat necks on his Strats. I believe the last iteration of his No 1. Strat used a 59 neck on the 54 body. His guitar tech had to finally replace the original neck with another vintage piece because the old one had been refretted too many times. The base fretboard wood was worn down to the point of no return. Most Mustangs had a 24-inch scale. A Fender Stratocaster has a 25.5" scale. If you were to mount a Mustang's neck onto a Stratocaster body, not only would it not fit correctly, but the intonation would be incredibly off. The distance between the bridge and the nut has to be bisected by the 12th fret. Otherwise the guitar would sound constantly out of tune. So no he did not use Mustang necks on his Stratocasters.

@@gholwiih I literally came here to say the same thing. You are spot on. I will also add that one of the neck changes was because a piece of stage equipment fell on the neck and broke it.

Ya beat me to the thumb trick. He got that from Jimi Hendrix. Many guitar players adopted that but none could make it sing like SRV.

Alex....DON'T EVER GIVE UP!! You've gotta start somewhere. Do you think SRV came out of the womb playing like that? HELL NO......PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!! That's how you get good. When you get frustrated....PLAY HARDER WITH DETERMINATION! Just think about this for a moment, you have something available to you right now, that people who were trying to learn guitar back in the day didn't have.....RU-vid. Anything about guitar that you could possibly want to learn, is a click away, right at your fingertips. Any chord, any scale, any mode, any song.....there's a quality tutorial posted here. Back when I started playing, you had 3 options to learn, 1.) Pay for, and take in person professional lessons, or purchase course/theory studies on cassette and VHS/BETA tapes.. ( Anyone remember Metal Method?) and learn to read the accompanying tablature that came with the lessons. 2.) Have a friend or family member who was a good player, and who were willing to take the time to teach you. 3.) Sit in your room alone for endless hours, chugging away, breaking songs down, note by note, chord by chord, to figure them out and how to play them. Life today as a budding guitarist has never been easier. For the amount of time you've been at it, you are showing good progress. Especially for doing it on your own with no teacher. You've got a good ear, and a sense of pitch, that's the key...so you're already a few steps ahead of the curve. Don't let SRV intimidate you.....you are just learning to crawl, you can't run alongside of a god as a newbie, lol. Look at SRV as inspiration, and let some of his soul and feel creep it's way into your playing as you progress. Trust me....his licks and hooks will stay embedded in your head, even if you don't initially realize it. Great reaction.....legendary guitarist...taken from us way too soon, but at least we have his recordings and videos as a remembrance, and roadmap to the blues. Not true at all. He had lessons DAILY from his brother Jimmy Vaughn.....who learned things from other players and brought that back home to Stevie. They'd play to albums all day long. If a person were truly "self taught" they'd have their own way of stringing a guitar and their own tuning of it etc. Nobody is truly "self taught" there are others that came before them that they draw inspiration from. So not in the spirit of being self taught or in reality was Stevie "self taught." But the true genius of any player comes from within.....that cannot be taught.

I was under the impression he was a protege of Albert King.

What bugs me is when people say "He was just born to play guitar." Sure, to be THAT F*N amazing, he had a predliction for it. But to GET that great, he played 25 hours a day for almost thirty years

100% fact and truth ! Put in the time and make no excuses to not learn, practice to improve. It takes time to get there... but it's worth everyday you give it. It can't be taken from you and you can play for the rest of your life if physically able. You can learn sections and phrasing from greats like SRV and develop your own style that sounds like "you". I loved this reaction video as it was spot on for most everyone that plays guitar... he is uniquely gifted.

Actually, there's several versions of how old he was when he started playing. One is he was 7 and another version is he was 13. Neither the less, it was also said he had a great ear and never learned how to read sheet music! There's reports and supposed quotes he said that his older brother was playing guitar, so he thought he would do it too!

Yeah, little Stevie probably played ten hours a day from the time he was about 8 until he was 14 or 15. At that point his band was killing local clubs and it was just a matter of time.

@zackr6 Big brother was his biggest fan and a helluva guitarist in his own right. They played alot together and even recorded an album. The doubleneck strat video is a must.

Thank the music gods it was recorded, because El Mocambo as a whole is one of the greatest performances of any musician anywhere anytime.

Sorry, that was JImi Hendrix in London, and Clapton was visibly shaken after watching Hendrix play for the first time. Pete Townsend of The Who, said to Eric Clapton, this guy is going to put us all out of business. Stevie Ray Vaughn was only about 9 yrs old when that happened, and it is a Fact it was Jimi Hendrix, that Clapton freaked out about. Tell the truth!

I think Clapton said to someone standing next to him off stage, while watching Stevie play, how am I supposed to follow him?

@@827dusty Clapton commented though, in SRV's biography, that he(Clapton) was struggling on a kind of basic(?) guitar at one of his concert warmups or rehearsals, and SRV picked up the same guitar and just made the guitar cry. He was definitely blown away by SRV playing the first time he heard him!

@@827dusty Clapton has stated several times that he was intimidated by Stevie Ray. He felt that way the first time he saw him live. Right up to the last 2 nights of Stevie's life. Both of those shows, Clapton watched Stevie for 20 or 30 minutes then had to stop. He said if he'd watched Stevie's full set he wouldn't have been able to join him for the encore/jam they did at the end. So the truth is Clapton felt that way about both Hendrix & SRV. And it's admirable that he's been so open about it. High praise for both, coming from him.
