How to find good reference images: Learn the medical name for things which will help you to find clearer, better reference images instead of other people's makeup. So using 'laceration' instead of cut, 'ballistic trauma' instead of bullet hole, etc. I will often google image search but that can come up with -horrible- results so be careful, start out small. I also follow accounts that show good reference images and the discussion behind what happened, so people like mrs_angemi or medicaltalks on instagram, or makeup fx reference image groups on Facebook. I also like going on the Figure 1. app (like instagram for medical professionals) and you can search by body part or key words to find stuff on there too.

Another couple of tips: 1. Get yourself a good mattifying creme, then if your wax/latex/silicone/gelatine/whatever looks too shiny you can mattify it to match your skin so it doesn't stand out as being fake or different from your surrounding skin. 2. Avoid spirit gum if you can, that stuff is evil. My favourite adhesive is prosaide, I don't think it's any more expensive than spirit gum. 3. Also another beginner mistake - thinking it will work the first time you try it. Most of my first attempts aren't great or what I want. With this kind of makeup you usually need to practice, don't expect to be an expert the first time you try, and don't be discouraged by failures - it's how you learn! 4. yes there are two number sevens in the video my bad.
@Freakmo
@Freakmo 7 лет назад
Yeah I use prosaide for my bald caps, and then prosaide cream (so a bit thicker) for around the edges if they're not blending out nicely / there's a visible edge)
@aj32769
@aj32769 7 лет назад
Freakmo can you explain why you wouldn't recommend spirit gum?
@Freakmo
@Freakmo 7 лет назад
As an adhesive it doesn't have the best... adhesion, and it has a strong and unpleasant smell. But the main reason I dislike it is because of the ether in it. It's quite common to feel like it's burning when it goes onto the skin, and if the ether hasn't fully evaporated before adhering something on top, the ether can get trapped and cause chemical burns on people's skin. So kinda unpleasant ingredients that make a lot of people's skin react to it. Prosaide is great, it's acrylic/water based and really gentle.

Ugh those instagram makeup artists drive me crazy! They use liquid latex and tissue paper to create wounds, and then the finished look is soo anatomically incorrect and mishapen that they end up dousing it in fake blood to make it look even remotely real! This video must be seen by everyone! Youre our only hope freakmo !
@kayluh1681
@kayluh1681 7 лет назад
Witte Artistry when it comes to blood, a lot of times less is more. Like I never could understand why some people spend forever trying to make a realistic wound, and adding a ton of detail just to ruin all of that work by drowning it in blood. In the end you have spent hours on a wound just to achieve something you could have done in a few minutes. Major pet peeve of mine, lol.
@SimulationTek
@SimulationTek 7 лет назад
Yeah. I always say, do what you like, learn from it all, just know what is realistic and what is not. We call it the "M.O.I." (Mechanism of injury(or illness)) how it happened.

Look at anatomy references, surgery videos(ed heads, RU-vid, etc. not too nasty as it’s a clean scientific environment) or videos made by trauma doctors (explaining healing process/body’s response to traumatic injuries, anatomy, and likely be less disturbing than say a picture of a body or critically injured person in a car accident, or a murder scene.) You can also just research the skin, especially if it pertains to yourself or your model.
@Powdah
@Powdah 7 лет назад
Love this. My pet peeve is also shitty photos of what looks to be great looking work. Good lighting helps not only good photos but helps with colour matching. On a side note if you wanted to sculpt a butthole arm makeup your example of what not to do would be perfect 😜
@Freakmo
@Freakmo 7 лет назад
I'm glad you saw my butthole symbolism, you really get me. I really hate it when it's a shit makeup but someone has photographed it well -either in over saturated light or dramatic lighting, then photoshopped it to hell, then posted it making their shitty makeup look half good but 75% of it isn't real.

Thank you for this! I don't do realistic gore but the tips are still helpful. For example, if creating fantasy characters you still need to consider the background of them to help them be more believable. These tips will also be helpful when I create my not very realistic gore, thanks!

This was such a helpful video - thanks! I'm a beginner at this and I'm just delving into the actual makeup part, and these are some really solid tips. Also, it's nice to hear it's supposed to be difficult and took you about a year to get good :)

I've been a subscriber from the very beginning. It really is such a wonderful thing to see how much you've grown as an artist! Tbh I don't think I'll ever try to do sfx makeup myself, but seeing a new video of yours always excites me. Your work is always amazing!

Should Mehron Extra Flesh be used after applying liquid latex on top of the latex? ...or should Extra Flesh be applied before stippling on liquid latex?

Thank you for saying so much of this! I'm a sfx artist and I lead a large team of people for a haunted attraction and I find myself saying so much of this over and over again. Just because you saw someone else do it on youtube doesn't mean it's safe!

Thank you!! This was very helpful. I did special effects for a couple b rated movies, was so much fun and really got me interested in going further, but seeing the slaptogetherbackyard projects on youtube, while its still cool to see what people can get creative with, it's nice to know what's safe and what's not.. being the big issue. Yea, sure, you can recreate burn marks with spray paint and glue... but SHOULD you.. because one cool look, shouldn't end up with an actual bad one. :D

An awesome way to make cheap blood darker and thicker/stickier is adding a black cream face/body paint- a small amount. We did it in emergency times at our haunted house I volunteer at and it's seriously pretty great for shading!
