You don't need more than a Celeron Dual Core 2 GHz, 4 GB RAM, and 500 GB HDD for programming per se. But you do need 16GB of RAM for all the tabs open with the code you are copying.
@harrytsang1501
@harrytsang1501 2 года назад
That’s all you need for developing with compiled languages, Linux kernel development is viable on a raspberry Pi 3 after your first build because most of the binaries are already there. What kills is these JavaScript frameworks with debuggers that prohibits significant optimisation. The frameworks verbosely logging everything also makes memory caching for locality impossible so it fallbacks to slow DRAM.

Videos like this do so much to demystify programming. You don’t need expensive equipment - you just need to start.
@christianbaer2897
@christianbaer2897 2 года назад
But the frustration you do not have with the expensive machine is somewhat important.
@srirachahero4679
@srirachahero4679 2 года назад
@@christianbaer2897 your point is well taken. As a developer today (admittedly, I do back end SOA work for an investment bank so it’s different) yes, you would do well to spend a few bucks for quality tools but there’s no immediate need for top end parts to get started, is what I was trying to say. Get started, then move up to better equipment.
@AY-gf3jq
@AY-gf3jq 2 года назад
.....Until you start working on app that needs build.... Then you realize that having a decent setup is a must have.
@srirachahero4679
@srirachahero4679 2 года назад
@@AY-gf3jq Sure... and then you go out and buy what you need to. The point is, get started on what you have. Too many younger folks in school (high school, etc) still think you need top shelf stuff (for some bizarre reason). No one needs an M1 Max to get started - that Core i3 will do just fine. edit: I even extend this to gaming - some kids who ask about PC gaming start getting shock at the price; rightfully so. But what I encourage is don't worry about high end stuff. Don't worry about FPS and Overclocking right now. You can build a decent gaming rig with an AMD APU right now. I just want them to get started with tinkering with the mother board, case, CPU, etc and OS install - in my opinion, it's a much better alternative to plugging in a console. They can improve a gaming PC over time.

I have also programmed on Chromebook before as well with 32gb storage, 4 gb ram, and intel Celeron N4100. The experience programming on it was kinda terrible especially with React because Linux would crash often when I had Brave with a couple of tabs open and Vscode open, not mention that I also had Chrome open with tabs, which ended up chewing up most my Chromebook's ram. That's why I decided to order a Macbook.

Very nice idea, I’d like to see more of these! Thanks Alex. 💜 One thing about the $80 Chromebook, that price is not the whole picture. Because it’s running a Google OS, you’re also paying with your data mined “life”. It’s hard to put a price on that, but that damage definitely reflects a whole lot more than $80. Maybe not $4000, but something in between. So please avoid Chromebooks people. Get a used MacBook instead.
@gsnayak06
@gsnayak06 2 года назад
I am all for Apple products but they lock people in their expensive eco system with no freedom and monopoly of app store. They make the stuff un serviceable outside and they them self wont support it . I have a 2015 Macbook Air that is working perfectly but shows "service recommended" for battery . Took it to Apple support and they won't replace the battery nor provide a battery to us against payment and the good Macbook air has been made. "Legacy" this means I would have to scrap this when Battery dies out. Think of how bad is this for environment if every gadget, car , furniture we use is made obsolete by design. This is good for company shareholders but not for buyers, society or environment.
@Slurkz
@Slurkz 2 года назад
@@gsnayak06 I'd just take it somewhere else or look up a repair guide and DIY. It's not a complicated repair.
@Slurkz
@Slurkz 2 года назад
Also: if you don’t choose to do this, you can still sell it for a pretty good price to someone else who can fix this themselves, or just uses it on mains. You don’t have to write it off. Now try and use a 2015 Chromebook… you can’t, nor should (because of the security risks). That’s the real e-waste here.

Nah Chromebooks are fine and affordable and gets the job done, Macbooks locks you in to an ecosystem. besides whether it's Google, Apple or Microsoft, they all mine your data one way or another.
@Slurkz
@Slurkz Год назад
@@dawoodwilliams3652 Apple has way less incentive to mine your data because they get more than enough revenue from selling hardware and services. It is pretty well researched: the other companies you mentioned mine way more and more sensitive data than Apple does. On top of that your data is generally more secure because of the walled garden that Apple’s ecosystem is: it’s just less susceptible to malware and spyware.
