Mr. Dunn your art teaching skills are far superior to anyone on the internet. You have the ability to break down complex scenarios into something the layperson can immediately grasp. Thank you for sharing your unique insight into the world of art.
You know what?? Out of all the videos I've ever seen on youtube, you make such informative ones. They are so awesome and detailed and you are good at it. I found your channel a few days ago(from another youtube video, someone had made a comment about your channel, I will thank them too :p) and I was like- damn it. This person is so good at teaching!!! You seriously deserve more than 320K subs. You deserve a lot more. I hope that soon enough you reach at least a million.....because you're too good to be not noticed ;-; Even in these few days, I made a point to try to see one video each day and they are so helpful....I hope you continue doing this.... I never really type such long comments but this time- I was seriously amazed at your talent at drawing and teaching as well. What's more? You aren't selfish. You share all the good tips and font advertise at all. //except the book but I lowkey wanna but it XD I hope I can keep learning. I was kinda like- my art ain't improving but now....I think it might. All the best to you man. This comment is too long though. I don't think you will ever read it too but if you do by any chance....THANKS (v^_^)v
I love reading comments like this! Keeps me going and more inspired. Thanks so much for taking the time to write all you did and I hope you keep making more and more progress : )
I agree completely. Alphonso Dunn, it won't be long til you are up there with channels like proko and moderndayjames. When anyone tells me they want to learn how to draw, I refer them to your channel
I just found your channel yesterday. I am really enjoying it. You are so knowledgeable and have a very good way of breaking it down. You are an excellent teacher.! I watched your video on lines yesterday. I learned a lot. I have been drawing portraits for 2 years. I am so glad I found this because I have been realizing need to memorize these measurements. Put it out in the universe and i finds you! I will check out your book and I can't wait to watch more! Thank you for the awesome instruction!
I love these videos from Alfonso. He not only shows you how something is drawn but he also teaches why features are where they are. He is an outstanding teacher.
I’m going to drop a note here about your book 1st its amazing I couldn’t have got to where I am now as quickly if it wasn’t for your perspective 2nd I know you stated it in the book , mindful practice on your own is important constant practice for your mind to find the way into your style is necessary.
"Best" drawing teacher I've had the pleasure to experience, mostly by purely listening to his articulate arguments in defense of his style -- with the emphasis on his own learning years. I can't wait to order his book and catch-up on all his available instructive videos. Alphonso is intuitively organized the order of his presentation and the important placement of tangential elements related to the underlying basic structures relevant to his subject. He simplifies very well. His warnings about natural negative detours all well considered. He is obviously a very kind person, if one only judges by the interaction with his daughter. I SUBSCRIBE for sure!
I learned in this video more than I learned in in 2 years of art class. our teacher would just place a random object infornt if us without any portion measuring instructions or shading she would tell us to realistically draw it.
Hi Al, you have taught me a tremendous amount as a mediocre self taught drawer, dare’nt say artist. I’m just drawing to improve. I really like the way you explain things as you see it and in layman’s terms. The way you dissect your drawings and tutorials into areas and sections so that we can learn aspects of the drawing as a whole is brilliant, mate. You have given me so much knowledge of the complicated and complex subject which is known as ART. Thank you fella. Dave ;-)
Oh wow... You just broke down and fixed all the issues I had about drawing faces. I literally closed the video, grabbed a piece of paper and tried to do it like you said and not only it worked but it was the nicest, cleanest face I've ever done in my life?????? I was feeling so stuck because of this and I watched so many videos and I couldn't get it right and this one was a life changer, I'm.... I'm just so, so happy, y'all have no idea. Thank you so much Alphonso! ❤️
THANK... YOU.... I've been trying a lot of methods to draw this f**** head and this is by far the best I've watched. My proportions are all right now thanks to this video.
finally someone who explain everything and doesn't say " with practice you get better" of course..but the concept are very important to learn and you're the best to explain them.Good job and thank you
Thank you so much. Your explanations are so clear. I love drawing and am constantly trying to improve and will practice using your suggestions. Thank you again for being so generous in sharing your knowledge. As an artist (I'm a musician) I think that passing on what you can do is so rewarding, especially if it sparks passion in your public. And you certainly do!
Sir , you are doing a great service by giving such good lessons on drawing , I practiced the human figures yesterday and was able to sketch different poses from memmory , your lessons are really helpful , Thankyou
I haven’t even finished watching, but I had to stop and say thank you. This video will definitely be played more than once, as it is the most valuable video I have ever come across. Thank you for explaining, taking your time, and for sharing your knowledge. I definitely needed this.♥️
I've tried learning proportions for a long time through RU-vid videos, but all they tell is - eyes are halfway (& 1-2 more things), that's it. But you explained everything in such simple terms, like comparing the head shape to a pentagon, & mentioning that brows are 1 eye up above the eye, it's so simple stuff but nobody ever reveals, you did, in so much detail, I truly wish to thank you in person, I'm so grateful that you made so much effort for everyone. Thank you so much alphonso :) You're not only good at drawing but also at teaching :) Thank you so much. I'm not sure if you'd ever read such a long comment but I hope you do :D Lots of happiness to you :)
Thank you so much, Alphonso!! I've been a fan of your work for a few years now, and what first drew me to your videos was how interesting it was to listen to you talk, even about concepts I thought I already understood. You describe your methods so thoroughly, but in a way that's easy to understandand follow, and with multiple examples (!!). You've also covered a bunch of concepts that are fundamental to the interpretation and representation of light and form that a lot of online art tutors forget about, which is BEYOND incredible. Your work is both educational and inspiring, and I really want to thank you for putting so much energy and time into sharing your hard work with us.
Outstanding! This really gives me a handle on head and facial proportions. Following your diagram resulted in the first face I have ever drawn that looks like it came from this planet.
Oh my god, thank you so much for this video. I have been struggling with face proportions since i started drawing and I've seen nearly every video on youtube to try and figure out what i was doing wrong. I knew that i was making my faces too long but i didn't understand why, this video was nothing but "ah ha!" moments for me. I finally have the facial land marks i needed to be able to relate all of the features to each other. I have improved more in the past hour then i had in the past year. I will definitely be picking up your book!
Thank you so much for your wonderful tutorials! I've been doing art for ages and these are some of the rare tutorials that have spelled things out in a concise yet thorough way I can understand without overwhelming me. Keep up the great work!
You are a outstanding Teacher and I completely understand everything you show. I have several learning disabilities and it's very hard for me to understand and retain what most people teach. You explain every step perfectly and go over it again ! So I can't thank you enough for all you do. I paint just about anything in acrylics and now I'm wanting to paint portraits but in order to do that I have to know the proportions and properly draw the portrait first. So I thank you from the bottom of my heart for teaching what you know to so many others.
I just bought your book and then came here and can’t thank you enough, I definitely feel more confident in sticking with my drawing and can’t wait to work through the book and practice.
This lesson is exactly what I needed to just start drawing lots of heads, and facial features every day, with a built in self improvement process as I go along! Thank you, Alphonson! I am very analytical, and this is helping me break free from constantly thinking that wayas I try to get better.
I keep coming back to this time and time again working out the proportions of the face to check out and fix things that don't look right. I thank you so very much for your hard work and dedication to teaching us how to draw. If it were not for you I would never be able to do this. I sure enough would never be able to afford to take classes. so thankful for you. May God bless you in what you are doing! I am legally blind so it takes me longer , but I so enjoy this and it is do able. This so makes sense.
Alphonso Dunn I can't tell you how this is changing my life. I never dreamed I would be able to draw. maybe tracing something, but that never really worked out very well. I do paint, but wanted to learn how to do more realistic work. Also my own designs. I realized that know matter what you do you have to learn and know the basics first. also you keep coming back to them no matter how much you do. This is where I keep drawing faces until I get it. then I will go to the side profile. thanks again for such an opportunity.
I wish i had seen this 6 years ago.. I'd be so good by now with your breakdown of facial construction and nuances. Well. I'm happy to stumble upon you now!!
This video is amazing! This is an old video and I'm just finding it now but this is the only video that really made me finally understand the proportions of the face and how artist are able to draw it from imagination. 39:05 make everything click together. I also just bought your books so I'm looking forward to learning much more Thank you soo much and please keep up the good work.
Thanks so much Alphonso, your teaching is so detail and practical! I really learnt a lot from your every single video , please keep teaching, we need you!
Thought I was going to skip through this video because it was so long, but this one held my attention and I really enjoyed it. Got some super easy tips on drawing ears and lips, also establishing and adding the side of the head to the basic oval. I'll be following and watching out for your next videos ❤
WOW!! You are so terrific…. The explanation of the face and the dimensions and the thought process… made drawing faces so easy!!! Thank you so very much!!
Just started watching your video and must say it really helps me to improve my drawings ! As a young proffessional illustrator, I have a lot to learn. So thank you so much for your videos and keep up !
After doing many pencil drawing of friends over m 'many' years, I've only NOW understood something about the proportions of a face. So interesting! I'll have to watch it again, pause the video and copy the notes. As you said, memorising this stuff is important. And practising. Must put it into practice after watching g the rest. Thank you Alphonso, your explanations are very clear.
I am just a beginner, but making a concerted effort to improve and develop the right techniques. Your videos are very helpful. I appreciate you taking the time to do this.
Hello from France. I don't speak your language very well but I make the effort to follow your advice which is by far the best I have found on youtube. Your book contains a lot of exercises. I am a beginner and practical in leisure activity and I find your teaching brilliant. One word bravo. When will I see a book on portraits? Thanks to the subtitles, I can follow your videos. Too bad some are not subtitled. Without you I would have given up.
Pure method...awesome! no filler or show-off stuff. Now time to fill, mold and shade the mannequin into a real face . Even try and produce something that can be regarded as art.
I used your explanation of prospective and measurements from your 3 tips to draw faster video today and found out I could combine simple shapes to make a human face/head and then was able to make a female head with different shapes. You really help me out a lot and I always take notes. I plan on getting your book as soon as I can, which can't come soon enough might I say, because I have no job. But what I learned today and from this video makes my problem with human forms so much easier of a task. So thank you.
As a drawing beginner, I've searched more than a dozen videos related to front portraits, but I think this is the best video I've found yet. Most of the videos are slightly different, but they have a little similar side and I'm not sure if I'll find a better video in the future, but I recommend this video to beginners who are similar to me. :) ❤️️👍
This is plainly the best video about head proportions. So amusingly simple and yet interesting. A truelly master art lecture. Alphonso Dunn takes you step by step, while he gives you key tips to be taken into account. Really thank you, Alphonso.
I really appreciate your guidance - the trickiest part to pick up for me was figuring the way the ear sits - without hair. I finally caught on watching the third time. Overall WONDERFUL. Many thanks. Bought your book too which really should be mandatory if benefitting from all the hard work of these videos. The theory of practice you preach is so relevant - a great believer of the 100 times rule to master anything.
I really like this process ! I just receive your book today, you really did an amazing job ! i just regret some more "step by step" like this video or others, but anyway ! Thank you from belgium :)
Can't believe how much difference I can see in jusf 45 minutes! She actually looks real! You've definitely got a comvert Alphonso! LOL! Thamks for the assist!I
Alphonso I'm not just saying this. You are one of my favorite artist. You always provide simple and precise explanation of your drawings. I was wondering if you could do a simplification nose video. Drawing the 6 different noses such as the Greek, Nubian, Roman, Snub, Turn Up and the Hawk from the three angles (front view, 3/4 view and the profile).
Ya men, you are the most complete artist over here, on YT, wich is very honorable! Because, as a beginer in drawing i need a „teacher”like man, not a simply time lapse sketch. So i realle apreciate all your hard working here, for us, and i m eager to learn a lot of solid information from ya!
This basic face proportion lecture with all the details around is a great help for me. Also: Great Book, I bought it a while ago and now made me look for you here on RU-vid! Thank you.
Question about size (width) of the eyes in relation to the height of the head (19:00). How do you find the width of the eyes? If the head is 20cm high, how wide is an eye?
OMG this was like hitting the golden jackpot after trying various books an methods for 3 years of struggling on proportions. The best explanation on the planet thankyou, you have my eternal gratitude. I'm so excited an will spend a lot of time practicing now 💖😊💖
Hi Alphonso, I'm getting so much out of your tutorials, thank you! I do however have a question about face proportions based on this video. When I start with an eye (just making up its size), I'm able to find the other proportions easily, but when I start with a vertical line and find the mid point, I don't know how large to make the eye. I know the width is 5 eyes, but how does the eye size or face width relate to the height of the face? Sorry to get technical, I just find myself getting stuck here. Thank you, S
Do not try to draw the eye alone in all that white. See the line where the face turns sideways and introduce the large shadows. And yes make grid lines like Alphonso Dunn for the shadows (lightly of course). Also in line with they eye see where the noses turns and lightly indicate the shadow. Indicate the shadow above the eye and below and see where the shadow aligns with the nose. Then you will see that the eye almost places itself. Always (whatever you are doing) keep attacking the whole impression emphasizing shadows ESPECIALLY the large ones. It works believe me. Hats off to Alphonso Dunn. Thanks Alphonso for everything.
I'm the same. WHAT IS THE HIGHT OF THE EYE. we need this to establish the eyebrows. so then we have the eyebrows to nose to chin. is this correct or Not. I'm confused
The thing I really like about this video is that it got me thinking about the construction of the face. I found it useful to take a selfie and observe my own face as the video was progressing.
@alphonso I love the tutorial but I have trouble with finding one helpful measurement. The head is 5 eyes wide but what is the height? From chin to top of the head. When you start drawing and you make eyes to big you can easily find yourself in a situation where the head is too short.
Lewandowski Bartosz you can use ears yo measure your the height of the eyes. for example, top line of the eye is in approx same line to your ears and bottom of the nose is the bottom of the ears. then you can guess. about 1/4 of your ears is yur eyes but then I am an asian. it could be different to yours.
Did anyone work this proportion out? It would be useful to know especially for absolute beginners. It is the only measurement not given by Alphonso. Of course eventually you would just eyeball it as Alphonso does, pardon the pun. Never the less this is a fantastic video and very helpful, Alphonso is the best teacher. I have a small tip for those starting to draw characters from the imagination. Use Alphonso's systems for the face, practice practice but when you make a small mistake, eg a nose is a little long , ears or eyes are very very slightly at different heights leave the drawing as it is and you will end up with very realistic face. A good way of making use of " mistakes" . All faces if you look closely are very slightly uneven in some way. Portraits are a different matter, the variations from the model have to be very precise but luckily we have Alphonso and practice to help us with that.
Hi Alphonso! You are a great teacher! You had simplified the most complicated subject when it comes to drawing. tried to learn proportions of thevhuman face many times, but all those quartes and halves drove me crazy!!! your instructions motivivated me to tackle new areas in my development as an amateur painter. ( 73 years old, retired school teacher) you got the gift of teaching. keep those video coming!!! thanks from my heart.
Sorry, sono italiana e non parlo inglese. Ma vorrei dirti solo Grazie grazie grazie ☺ Ho capito come impostare la forma del viso, nonostante la difficoltà linguistica. L'arte abbatte le frontiere 😉
Well, We are still watching your great videos. Trying to find my niche as a beginning older artist! Thank you! I had to watch it 2 times to get all the 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, etc.!! Things are looking better already! KM
