I've probably caught more striped bass on this simple sand eel pattern than on all the rest of my flies put together. Tie some up, fish 'em and then hang on!
Last weekend I caught a nice 38 in striped bass on a tink mackerel I created. It was one of the most satisfying feeling to know I tied the fly I caught my best fly striper on . My dad and brother each caught really nice 40 in stripers .
Thanks, great tutorial. Simple, easy, small about of materials, and looks super fishy. Alter colors and size and this design would imitate any thing bodied bait fish.
I enjoy your recordings and have subscribed. I'm having a hard time finding the 2x strong, short shank ss hook. I was going to try a 1/0. Any help for me?
These mylar eyes can be tough to find. I typically use 3/32" or 1/8" eyes on most flies, occasionally 3/16" eyes on larger flies. I dig through discount bins to find these eyes as they're often poor sellers since most tyers don't know how to make them stay put. Bears Den in Taunton, MA has them and most fly shops might have a few buried in a bin or tucked in a corner, layered in dust. It's just a matter of searching. Most often I'm using a black on silver.
