In these videos, I had been using 8/0 and 10/0 threads, however I found at times that these fine threads could cut the weak herl quill, which of course, defeats the purpose. I've never had that issue when using UNI-Thread 6/0 and I would recommend that thread for this technique.
Thanks for the tip Peter! Do you know of any way to fortify peacock herl for use on saltwater patterns like the Lefty's Deceiver? For instance, can you treat the herl with some sort of varnish? Seems to me that the herl would be chewed up after the first fish. Thanks in advance! Seán
I use this dubbing loop technique for my saltwater flies and they survive quite well. Just use a stout thread for the tubing loop and it will hold together. I don't coat my herl bodies as I feel that it hurts the iridescence of the material.
