Good one Jamie. I use the Fairlight tab for pretty much the same things for voiceover in my videos. By the way, not sure if you mentioned it, but could be worth for others to save the preset on the Vocal channel for future videos, so that they don't have to re-adjust all the voiceover settings as well. And, the last part of your tutorial where you showed the cross fade and equaliser combo was a great tip. Didn't know about that, and it makes a great effect! Thanks bud 👍
@JamieFenn
@JamieFenn 2 года назад
Aw yes. Should have added that at the end. But on the other hand even if you make a preset each application of the mixing tools will differ from track to track and video to video.

omg when i heard sidechain i immediately though about the horrors of sidechaining in cubase a long time ago hahahaha crazy man i liked this video a lot, the release in the sidechain was low and it sounds like u said in the video but actually you can use that to create some interesting effects, especially with instruments haha nice.

@MSVISUALS
@MSVISUALS 2 года назад
I really love your tutorial, but one thing confused me a bit at the end. You can get rid of the pumping effect by tweaking the "hold" and "release" times, so that the music keeps being compressed between the words. Especially if you often switch between parts with voiceovers and parts with no voiceovers, you can definitely save the time for the volume adjustments because the side chain will do that automatically for you. 👌
@JamieFenn
@JamieFenn 2 года назад
It just depends on the original audio signal. Sometimes people talk fast or slow, and how quick you want the audio to come back depends on those hold and release times. Hope that clears things up!

Thanks for the video. One thing that isn't clear to me is when you are doing the EQ Notch filtering for Band 2 and 3. What exactly are the "problem frequencies"? I am not sure exactly what to be listening for. If you could do a follow up video where you show more specifically what you are listening for when doing the notch filtering, that would be great. Anyway, thanks again for the video. I learned a lot.

When boosting listen for the part that makes your ears cringe. I’ve been producing music for years so it’s a bit easier for me but when you do it a lot you’ll train your ears to really listen.

-3db seems a little high, no? The mixers I've worked with usually cap it @ -12db or -6db. Any particular reason you run things that loud? I guess if youre working with 32-bit audio it doesnt really matter, since your only limit is the speakers you're screening on.

75% of this is subjective and offers very little to your average viewer. For example, you say, "We're cutting frequencies that we don't need." This is meaningless without some explanation as to what we're supposed to be listening for. You say, "I like to turn the ratio up to 2.5 to 3.5, kind of just personal taste." What does that even mean? And then this: "We're not going to need any of those higher frequencies because they're just not needed." Honestly, I am more confused now than I was before I watched this.
@JamieFenn
@JamieFenn Год назад
I could’ve explained everything in detail, and this video could’ve been hours long. And to be totally honest with you, even if I did explain everything, a first time listener or viewer, won’t even notice the difference unless I make extreme adjustments which really doesn’t help anyways. Audio mixing, and actually being able to hear the subtle differences takes years of training. Not only training your ears, but your brain.

Thank you for the tutorial; it was helpful. However, I noticed an issue in your final A/B testing at 12:22 . Both sounds should ideally have the same volume for a fair comparison. Yet, the treated sound appears louder as evident from the peak meter 12:30 . This makes it challenging to judge the results accurately.

Hi, Jamie. I always appreciate your videos. Thank you. I’m guessing you were in a hurry to crank this out so I’m not being critical in any way here, just trying to be helpful. Your gate was too aggressive early and cut off the attack on some of your dialog explaining the process. Also, there is a spot where you have a random audio track come in on the left channel for a moment. Later your narration is left only and not corrected for a short sentence. I don’t know if RU-vid lets a person update the video or not. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I love your stuff, man. Joe

I've tried all these settings, and my voice and music are still below average, not coming close to how they sound in Resolve or when exported. I tried AAC, 192 Kbps, -1 true peak, and -16 LUFS, and converted all tracks to mono in a single bus and exported that one. My 1-minute video is about 100 MB, so once I uploaded that as is, and another time I uploaded the converted FFmpeg version (~20 MB), but still, my audio is distorted. :( And the sources for audio i picked mp3 for music and .wav (full clarity) for voice.
