Thanks for the informative video. I come across lots of dress shoes in the bins. One of my first sales was a pair of used Alden's that sold for $100. Good brand to pick up at well.

Good video. I’m curious as to where you are finding shoes for your inventory. You mentioned purchasing eel skin shoes for $8.00 and sold for $70.

Almost everything I sell is sourced at Goodwill, including that pair of eel skin shoes. Occasionally I will buy at garage sales, on offerup, etc.

Hello Robert, New subscriber here. I've been watching/ catching up on your videos. Great stuff. I'll be chatting with you quite often about How To do things concerning shoes (i.e. cleaning, polishing, etc.). Q. What price point do you strive for? I've been thrifting sneakers and I try to keep to a buy/ cost average of $5.00. What would you recommend for dress shoes?
@robertmonroe4944
@robertmonroe4944 4 года назад
I would say in general I probably am in the $8-12 on average for most dress shoes. Keep in mind that what you pay is also very relative to what you can get. My best pair of shoes I've sold I paid $16 for but sold for $365 dollars plus shipping. Certain brands fetch a high enough price that you can pay $20 and still pocket more than what you will for a lot of $5 pairs. As a side note I also select shoes with as little work to clean as possible as I just don't like spending much time on restoring them.
@n2lightmediaproductions648
@n2lightmediaproductions648 4 года назад
@@robertmonroe4944 Thanks for your speedy reply. Good advice. I'll keep checking the comps before I make a purchase. Like you said, if you spend $20 and make $100 that's a good flip. Thanks again. TTYL.

Great video! Where do you source most of your shoes? I know you said thrift stores but is there anywhere else I might find them? We only have 2 thrift stores close so I’m more limited.. but can be in Pittsburgh in 30-40 minutes.
@robertmonroe4944
@robertmonroe4944 4 года назад
I am lucky in that I have a dozen Goodwills within 20 minutes of me. That is where I source most of my items. If you have to drive further to source, I would make sure you have a big list of brands and items so you can spend more time in a larger thrift store and really dive deep into the racks.

Hey Robert. I have another question for you. During this video you showed a pair of dress shoes (I forget exactly what pair) and I noticed that the sole of the shoes had some scratches / marks from normal wear- nothing bad at all, do you try to clean/cover those up or is it OK for them to be there? I'm about to order a shoe cleaning kit (with brushes, polish, cleaner, etc.) and was wondering if you clean up that area of the shoe or not. Thanks
@robertmonroe4944
@robertmonroe4944 4 года назад
It really depends on how much more I believe I can get relative to how much work I have to put in to cleaning. I will make a video showing a clean up on a pair of nikes and a pair of dress shoes that I just picked up at a Goodwill. Keep your eyes out for it!

After watching your video I snagged my first pair of dress shoes. Ecco but the insole is missing does this hurt the value, do I put a store bought one in?
@robertmonroe4944
@robertmonroe4944 4 года назад
Scott I would say anytime some part of the shoe is missing or damaged it will lower the value, so make sure you include that in the description. That being said is things like shoelaces and insoles can be easily replaced. I generally don't pick up shoes that are missing the insoles unless they are very high value and the rest of the shoe is in very good condition

14.5" x 19" works for the majority of shoes I ship. Some larger boots may require you to pack each shoe in a separate bag

The Johnston and Murphy "tassels"...are not selling so much because of the tassels...the problem is the "kiltie" under the tassels. (That strip of leather in between the tassels and the vamp). Shoes with a "kiltie" look very dated. The kiltie was last popular in the early 90's. If the kiltie were not there, and it was just tassels...I believe you could sell the Johnston and Murphy's with no problem. Tasseled shoes are still popular...just not the ones with a kiltie.

I'm not a tassle fan myself but I know what you mean. I'm also very picky with Johnston and Murphy as similar to your Florsheim point, I feel there is a wide range of quality differences in the Johnston and Murphy lines.

Florsheim-is pronounced “Flore-shime” (long “I”, not long “E”). (Used to manage the men’s shoe department in a major dep’t store). Thanks for sharing your knowledge of many shoe brands I haven’t heard of, though! Congratulations on your success after only a year...hope I can do as well. Just getting started & a bit intimidated by the whole process of EBay. I’m very comfortable with the sourcing & refurbishing...got my start there in the USMC spit-shining my combat boots & leather oxfords (Vietnam)! LOL

I have to disagree with Aldo being an profitable brand to pick up. They are not sold at Nordstrom’s there are actually ALDO stores in most malls. They are pretty cheaply made shoes and comparable to other mall brands like Banana Republic, Loft, etc. There have been 672 pairs of used ALDO men’s shoes sold on eBay and only 62 of those sold for more then $45 and I would guess at least half sold for under $20.
@robertmonroe4944
@robertmonroe4944 3 года назад
I can completely understand where you are coming from. Here in Arizona I have seen Aldo many times in the Nordstrom Rack, which I should have been more specific. I do agree that a lot of their shoes are cheaply made and I myself pass up on most of the brand but I have found a few pairs that I was able to pick up under $5 and sell for $40-50. It is certainly not a favorite brand of mine but when the right pair comes along I will pick it up.

Unfortunately...you are confused about the "Imperial" Florshiem dynamics. It is true...that the "Imperial" line of Florsheims are popular and sell. But....they must be Imperial line from the past. Like from the 50's, 60's, 70's, and early 80's. Those Imperials are well made and sought after. Florshiem today however...also makes an "Imperial" line...but they are crap. So while you are getting "views" for your Imperials...what is happening is...as soon as the viewer realizes they are not Imperials from back in the day...they move on. The Imperials you showed here...are obviously the newer Imperials. They are simply crappy made. It can be confusing, I know...but just because a Florsheim has Imperial written on it...does not mean they are the highly sought after ones. Florsheim just simply resurrected the Imperial name in the last few years, with the same low quality they have been making shoes in the last few years. Gotta be careful....

@@robertmonroe4944 Robert Monroe I just got done working for goodwill for 2 months. we where super strict on condition. almost any high dollar shoes never hit the floor unless they snuck out. sometimes marked up but we have set prices on clothing and shoes for the most. heavy wear on the sole to much wear on the insole to weathered but just in need of a shine. at my local stores those all go to the bins. they say no one wants to buy like that. but all most all brands like this at the store I worked at would get sent to the ecom part of goodwill.
@robertmonroe4944
@robertmonroe4944 4 года назад
@@johnplecker7235 Interesting. Yes, I have probably 10-12 goodwills within 20 minutes of where I live and each seems to have different standards of what they put out. I'm sure that it has to do with how attentive the employees are at each location but I have seen shoes that I could literally stick my finger through the bottom inside the shoe. Several pairs that stayed on the racks for months (I assumed they would have sent to the bins sooner), but its very inconsistent from one store to the next.

One of the things I've noticed with both my own shoes over time as well as thrifted shoes is that although they may look good on the outside they are completely beat down on the inside and are now uncomfortable due to a lack of support. Does the shape on the inside factor into your pricing at all or are you mainly going by how they look in a photo online and have you had any customer complaints about the inside condition?

@robertmonroe4944
@robertmonroe4944 4 года назад
Wider sizes do well as do sizes 9-12 for me. The more common sizes have a larger base of buyers so they can move faster, but wide and less common sizes are harder to find so buyers are willing to pay more for the less common sizes. Hope that makes sense and thanks for the question!

Hey man , I just saw your video and I learned a lot so thank you ! But I had a question. I recently found some salvator ferragamo tassel loafers and I wanted to sell them on ebay or wherever but I didn't know how much to sell them for. So I could use some of your advice. The shoe has minor damage and are slightly warn but they still look really good. So if you could get back to me I'd appreciate it
@robertmonroe4944
@robertmonroe4944 3 года назад
You need to go on to eBay and search under sold listings for used shoes as close to what you have as you can. You just browse through the listings and compare the different conditions and sold prices to help give you an idea of what yours should sell for. If you watch my video through I cover all the considerations to keep in mind from the brand, to condition, style, and size. However, nothing replaces the value of going on eBay and doing your own research as you will also see other shoes and styles to keep an eye out for on your future thrifting trips that will maximize your profit for not just this pair of shoes but for your future flips as well. Hope that helps and thanks for the support!
