Third video of 3 of a three hour beginner ski lesson. This video covers an introduction to turning and loading the chairlift. The channel can be supported here www.paypal.com/paypalme/skist...
I watched all 3 videos. As a PSIA instructor, I say it doesn't get any better than Deb Armstrong. She is a true professional with a fantastic method of teaching adults and kids. Her drills, tasks, and exercises are spot on and her verbal communication is amazing. I love watching her videos and always learn good things for my skiing and teaching.
Seconding the above. I'm going for my level 2 teaching part soon, and watching all of her videos has been insanely helpful for both my MA and working on prescribing fixes for issues.
To see even this perfect stranger, to me, is making me smile so big to see someone indoctrinated, getting it, and enjoying our sport. Always thought I wanted to be a ski patroller in retirement, but now I have to consider being a ski instructor.
I watched the 3 parts/videos the night before I went skiing and I learned so much Thank you! I don’t fall anymore lol and This was my second time trying skiing, I actually enjoyed it...so much fun! 😀😅😀 THANK YOU! 🙌🏼❤️
Please make videos on beginner turning intermediate. Your teaching rocks. I’ve been skiing green slopes for three years. I feel confident in these but want to try intermediate. I’m in my 60s and didn’t start this up until 3-4 years ago.
I saw dozens of other vídeos and also had 6 hours of training. Can say without a doubt that these 3 vídeos from Deb are THE best instruction a beginner can have. It adresses the right things to do and also the most Common mistakes. Congrats.
Thanks so much. As a novice instructor, I learned so much about how to correct common ineffective movements. Its been 9 months since teaching and I needed a review. Your video was very helpful and I feel more confident.
Love it, Deb. I teach at Snowmass, mostly, and teach a lot of beginners. Great work with Tuesday. You gave me so much in this video so let me offer something that may be of value. I've worked with many of the world's greatest golf teachers including Cameron McCormick. He told me, "I always want something good to happen in the first 20 minutes of a lesson." That obviously happened with Tuesday. For me, with a beginner, it could be getting on the magic carpet while carrying skis. I make a big deal out of these victories. Thanks again, Deb.
Excellent Instructor. I am glad I have found your videos. I can't wait to watch your video progressing from wedged turn to carving. Thanks a lot for videos.
Thank you. One of my all-time favorites is your skillfull skiing powder progression with the two under 12 skiers. Followed by outside foot-outside foot. FYI, I am an instructor for Mohan Skiing and Boarding at Summit Central. PSIA I, CSIA II. Age 72. My clients are at the same level as Tuesday. Take care.
All of your videos make me want to come out to Steamboat and get a lesson!! You're an amazing teacher and Ive learned so much just from watching so thank you so much!!
I had no idea Deb is in Steamboat! I head there tomorrow. I’ve been watching many of her videos. This will be my second time skiing (tried snowboarding too) and the instructor I had made me feel dumb. Anyone who gets to train with Deb is super lucky.
Great vids. Watching a real student progress with the instructor, is so much better than an expert simply demonstrating. I really enjoyed these and hope you make plenty more vids like these.
I came back to watch you again this year after watching you before returning to skiing after 15+ years last year. I loved skiing when I was younger and had a bad crash in my teens- I was terrified of trying again. Your way of teaching and communicating with your students is so clear and reassuring, I wish I could take a lesson with you!
Thank you a million times Deb! BTW, your student was doing a great job too 👍You are definitely the best ski professor. Your teaching methods are beyond perfect.
I loved the bike comparison, Deb!! I wish I had the opportunity to watch these videos of participate in your ski clinics while I was 20 years younger:)) I'm teaching skiing to my wife and kids and we are super grateful to you. Wish you many more years of happy skiing 👍👌
Excellent video thank you. Could see the light bulb moment and her joy, fantastic. Please consider a similar format video with a lower intermediate to move from early parallels with not much to low edging skills to more dynamic edged pressured turns. Love to see how to progress that as my better half is struggling to make the leap. Cheers.
This is a brilliant lesson. Please more in this format. it is really interesting to see progress rather just seeing an expert demonstrating final goal.
What a great teacher you are. Tuesday accomplished tremendous progress and has foundations firmly in place. Snowplough (wedge) turns become more fluid with progression to skiiding turns which are parallel. Many cease to advance their skiing beyond that stage but it is at that point that the next course of lessons are needed to convert parallel turns to carved turns. The step change is as great from novice to parallel. Once that is mastered, then time to explore areas off-piste or cross into the snowboarding terrain. Thanks Deb. From an instruction perspective TOP marks!
I'm an old instructor from Breck and these videos are wonderful. Nice job Deb! I always told my skier to relax their arms and that it's a left-ski, right-ski dance across the fall-line.
Amazing work as usual. Really wise message to the instructors at the beginning. Well done. To many of us are complaining about their beginners but don't realize it's their fault if their pupils don't improve. Start picking the right terrain. Nice job Deb.
I took a first timer out yesterday and I pushed it too fast, and she gave up early... such a disappointment. These videos give me a much better example of the approach I need to take
Im about to go skiing for the 3rd time and the last time i went was years ago. Deb i LOVE your videos, the energy, attention and care that you bring for your students and in this video! so glad I found you on youtube.
I watched these videos before I went skiing for the first time in my life this week. These videos helped me tremendously to feel more comfortable and confident in learning how to ski (I still have a lot to learn). Deb does such a great job in explaining every detail and it helps so much. I found that I love skiing and look forward to learning more from your videos!! Thank you!!
I live in New zealand and I restarted to ski last week for 30years. I am still beginner but I found your utube channel and I feel you are an awesome teacher. Best video among I searched a lot. Thanks for your nice video and teaching👍🙏🏻♥️
I learned the basics alone, study physics of skiing and commit successfully my first black(a bit bumpy) in 4 days.I did some powder too. You're videos make me understand how much time, money and commitment you need to be good at this sport.I am going for snowboard now and lesson learned,go with instructor. Also, congratulations, you are by far the best instructor in youtube.
I'm from Nepal and learning by myself and your videos are really really helpful. Learning from your videos. God bless you. Thank you so much for sharing it on RU-vid
This makes me so happy. Thank you for making my day. I have been to your country and I brought home life long memories. I trecked the Everest region. Take good care.
These lessons are so clear to understand I feel. I wish someone had told me these thoughts at the start of my ski career. My girlfriend is going to try skiing next season and I think I will suggest that she watches these first as I feel these lessons will give her an upfront understanding of the actions needed to get control.
Now I see what was I doing wrong when V turning and why was it so hard for me after only one slope down. :) Your videos are such a help to newcomer skier, thank you.
I looooove your videos! thank you so much for sharing, and you are so patience and dedicate when you teach! I love everthing about let it go at mountain.,... wise words.... for me skiing its like a dance! thank you again! great job!!!!!!!!!
Hello Ms Debbie, I watched a couple of your videos since last year. Its from one of your videos where I learned how to climb up sideways and stand on the edge of my skis to not slide - the ski instructor was impressed how I knew that, considering it was my first time ever to wear ski boots and ski ever in my life. However, I started watching these parts with Tuesday in particular since I started going to ski lessons for our holiday in March. Two weeks ago, Saturday, I fell so many times from the dry ski slope (7 times!!) and I just couldn’t turn or do the wedge stop properly. I watched this specific video before I went to sleep, and the next day for my ski lesson, I didn’t fall over even once, and most importantly, I was able to turn on a wedge gently from left to right. One week later, I was able to ski from the top of dry ski slope, I was able to turn from left to right with more speed and control; when we go to Les Arcs, i am hoping to get more lesson there and hopefully learn how to parallel turn. But I am already watching your videos with Kelly, and I am already learning a lot. Thank you so much; you are the best ski instructor on youtube- i just really love your enthusiasm.❤️
Yes, she did great. I think it helps that she is a dancer. skiing can relate to so many activities. gymnastics, bike riding, riding a horse. It helps when one can relate skiing to something they already do. People then seem to learn faster. Take care
Thank you very much Deb , i learnt a lot from you, love your details on moving feets, never got this advise from my ski instructors, regards from Saas fee ski resort
I'm an advanced skier (not bragging, just a fact) and have been for 25 years. Due to covid I can't get my son into a lesson for over a month. I was super nervous about trying to teach my 6 year old (we are both stubborn) how to ski. I am trying it tomorrow and I feel SO much more optimistic after watching these videos! I didn't realize how much I had forgotten from 30 years ago. If I hadn't watched these videos I would have failed 100%. Great job Deb, Thank you!
Nice use of repetitive visualization ! As you say mileage is the key . . . The Mind and body are learning something new together, and successful repetitive reinforcement is key ! Your student is a great typical cross section of the students in my classes. Usually I take the Ski Poles away from my students so as to eliminate effort from the Skier to use their Hands and Arms to assist in the turn . . . which they will often try to do. If my student does have Ski Poles, I will encourage them to keep the basket and tips slightly behind them . . . good for safety concerns. Great video . . . thanks for sharing ! ( Happy Holidays !! )
And the flow part.. watching this demo, I am trying to see myself few years back..now, being more experienced, I would say " may the flow be with you"😊. But with more mileage, things will get built-up. Then, skiing along with family, is priceless. Good luck, and thanks Deb for putting a video for beginners. Love all her videos.🤗
You have the ideal student and terrain. Not all people catch on as easily as she did and where I instruct we don't have multiple areas to teach on, just flat, magic carpet and a harder green. No in between from the carpet to the green (more like easier blue) so we have a lot of "run away" students first time off the lift, no matter how well they demonstrated their stopping skills on the magic carpet run. I'd l love to instruct where you are. Your teaching skills are top notch. I'd even love a lesson from you.
For all beginners: stop the video at 13:29 you see both at the end of the turn. You can see easily how much more bend she has in the ankle, thus being more over the ski and having a better balance. Feeling the front of the boot instead of the back of the boot. But in general for a first lesson the scholar is doing an incredible job, and you Deb without a doubt are one of my favourite teachers I got to know. Always learning something new
I stumbled onto your channel and oh what a treasure trove of information. Taking my daughters on their first big ski trip to Vail. Mom and dad have been skiing for years but have held off until they were older ( 9 and 12) for a multitude of reasons. These Beginner videos are just amazing on how to approach a beginner. Also, your teaching style and patience are something we should all strive for in our daily lives when we are teaching anything to someone else. Oh and by the way, the girls are getting a private lesson with an instructor and ski school. So mom and dad know we have no business teaching them the fundamentals, but I do want to have some tips in my pocket for them and to help me recognize issues and help. New subscriber now :)
Deb is awesome, I am going skiing in 2 weeks for the first time in many years, and just listening and watching her i am feeling quite confident, great instructor, is she in colorado
Deb, thanks so much for your video. I am buying ski's this afternoon and haven't been skiing in about 20 years. My Grandson, 9, and I signed up for Sunday passes at the local mole hill. He is a good hockey player but has never skied. I wanted to brush up on my teaching skills, and probably my skiing skills. Your video was awesome. Haven't looked at all of your videos yet but I have been online for hours this week trying to figure out what skis to purchase for me and Mikey. If I could recommend a video, guiding 50 somethings on how to get back into the sport. It's so exciting to get back into this after years. Double Daffy's with 160cm skis seems easy.. Prolly shouldn't do that though. Thanks again. Oh, and I remember you getting the gold. It was awesome!
Nice. I really like some of the terminology combined with hand movements. I prefer more emphasis on turning to stop as a very early step, moving away from the wedge for speed control as soon as possible. I like the "grab the mountain" term. I prefer more emphasis on letting the ski do the work and explaining how pressure, combined with the sidecut of the ski, makes an arc that will naturally turn whereas Deb emphasized actively turning the outside ski, which you really can't do. Would have liked to see how she introduced getting on/off the lift prior to loading. Not quite as critical with that six pack lift but our beginner lift is an old double and unloading can be difficult for beginners since it is moving faster and the ramp is a bit steeper. Like she said, there are many different ways to do a beginner lesson and we can all learn from each other.
Of course you can actively turn the outside ski in the environment of this beginner lesson. Going down the slope 30mph or faster or whatever, you're going let the ski do what it's designed to do but this wasn't it. That said, I agree with moving away from wedge for speed control almost as soon as the person got the wedge concept. Which, pretty much happened here, within a few hours Deb took Tuesday to parallel turns.
Wow I really wish I had seen these before my first ski trip this weekend. My instructor started with parallel turns and never taught us how to stop. It was terrifying.
