@morbeus Morbeus While I can see your point, it really depends on the person. I still remember my first car. 2004 Monte Carlo Supercharged Super Sport. I lost that car to a black ice incident. And I legit cried over that car and still wish I had it. So it's really up to the person whether a watch would be more important than a car.

@@Gaming2020-c1b I'm 17 saved up much more than you did and bought a $300 car, and until today always had cold feet when looking to buy a watch. Honestly, saving is awesome but remember that there is a reason that you work, and it's not just to rack up the numbers in your bank account. Just bought this piece this morning: www.orientwatchusa.com/collections/classic/products/ra-ag0015l10a See, while the bargain you scored on that Omega is awesome, for me it was enough to buy a car AND a watch. Hi Teddy, Others have already commented on this danger for beginners. When they discover the beauty of watches for the first time, the desire arises to keep buying watch after watch in a short amount of time. But then months or a year or two later, after learning more, they realize they could have made much better choices. The lesson is to go slow at first and not buy simply on impulse.

Impulse is a huge one. This video, of course, does not point out all of the mistakes that are made. Thanks again for tuning in, Chad.

I've been swapping out the straps of some of my twelve watches recently and, you're right, a new strap does give the watch an entirely new look and feel! Also, I'm really glad that you showed a Timex in your video. I'm a fan of Timex watches - they may not be the most expensive or sought-after, but they're well-made (for the most part), look good and perform pretty well, too!

Anton Chigurgh I’ve heard that argument a lot and don’t quite get it unless you are buying for investment of course. These days you can get so many solid watches for around $60 -$100 that in the past 12 months I’ve bought a Seiko kinetic, 2 superb Seiko 5s autos and a Guanqin auto with a NH36 movement and sapphire, (ok I have also had an Orient Star Classic gifted from my Dad) but in all I have only spent a total of £285 ($375). That’s about 12% of the cost of a Tudor Black Bay and considerably less percentage of the cost of a Rolex! In other words - a fairly small percentage. Unless you are buying a new budget watch or two every month then it won’t make much difference for the average earner to still be able to save up for a luxury timepiece over a few years as well. Actually these watches I have keep such good time and are so well finished for the price that I am not interested (yet!) in any luxury watches!
@tenylegnincsevem
@tenylegnincsevem 6 лет назад
i dont think so, when you start out you are searching for your style, so you will buy a lot of watches you will never really wear. almost all the big watch collectors say their first 15 watches were bad _for them_. even teddy buyed into the hype of the skx and others, then he found out what he really likes.
@jacc88888
@jacc88888 6 лет назад
tenylegnincsevem Yes I agree that is often the case but my argument was about cost- a decent mechanical watch costs so little these days that it shouldn’t affect your ability to save for a more expensive one. Also I would consider buying a few cheaper watches as a reasonable way of experimenting with what you really like before pulling the trigger on a much more pricey one.

I'm doing exactly that with the tag heuer formula one. Why? Because to me it looks amazing, and I've wanted a tag since I was like 10 (no doubt thanks to their marketing), the quality is good, its everything I want in a watch that I will wear daily and in my budget. More long term I'd like to save up for an omega seamaster and a tag heuer carrera caliber 16. But for a start I'm going with something I like and can afford.

Note: I've noticed that my 42mm Orient Ray wears smaller on my 6.5” wrist than my 40mm styles. This is due to the downward slant of the Orient's bezel, as opposed to a flat bezel found on Seiko divers. New watch shoppers might want to pay attention to that feature.

This video is 4 years old at the time of this comment but I just started following you Teddy the past 3 or 4 weeks and I've come to learn so much more about watches than I did before. And one thing I think people need to know obviously it's about the movement, quartz or mechanical, do you want to change your battery? if you put that watch in a safe for a few years that battery can destroy the movement. So I think people especially buying a watch for the 1st time need to learn about the movement and quality of movement.

I think some people regard watches only as time keeping instruments where as I feel they can be so much more . several years ago my parents took me to a jewllers to pick out a watch for my 21st birthday, was never one to ask for much, and I'd never bought a watch before I was aware of some brands and some of the features they carried but that wasnt really on my mind, once I found something that liked the look of. Ended up walking out with a Seiko Cal. T792. The thing that made it all however and it's something I don't think people think about when gifting watches is the personal inscription on the back. From the day I got it I've taken such an interest in watches and I wear it always when out . It's part of who I am now.

oh one thing not a lot of ppl mention: a good mechanical watch is much like a car, over time the upkeep is gonna be the heavy money sink, so you need to keep that in mind. So many people i see go nuts over chronograph watches...but keep in mind on average chronographs are much tougher to do work on being more complex and thus more expensive to maintain. E.g. Breitling charges almost DOUBLE for a full maintenance for a classic navitimer with a chronograph as they do for their non chronograph watches. And tied to that ofc, is make sure it's not gonna be too hard for you to send your watch for service, most ppl say every 5 years or so, which is fair, and quite a long time but regardless, I don't like to be hunting around high and low to find someone (especially important based on where you live etc).

If you buy a mechanical chronograph, read the manual before operating it! While some chronos have a flyback feature, meaning they can be reset without stopping them, others (and this includes some very expensive watches) can be seriously damaged if the chronograph is not stopped before pressing the reset. Don't expect the warranty to cover you if you do this.

In my line of work and income I choose the best cheap brand digital watch for work. I work in a boiler room of a hospital. I perform chemical water test which are timed. I use a Timex stainless steel digital watch with expansion band. It looks nice enough for my type of work, durable enough to take the usual beating, and cheap enough that I can easily afford to replace if damaged beyond repair. Another advantage to this watch is the back plate is held on by four screws making it easy to replace the battery. Because of my income a metal band analog watch would be best for casual dress. I would LOVE the mechanical Timex Marlin but that is above what I can reasonably spend on a watch. A mechanical watch would be best because I wouldn’t need to worry about a battery. May end up with a quartz movement analog. Looking for a classic design like the Marlin. My wrist is small so no huge bulky watches. So sad that Elgin has become a Walmart fashion brand considering where they started.

Other beginner mistakes: buying a Rolex or Tudor in 2018-2020 during the tulip mania craze; buying quartz --ever; buying at a mall; buying "Swiss" from shippers based in Bulgaria and India; buying a vintage but dead brand at a flea market just because it's marked "Swiss" on the dial, it's 'cheap' and it ticked a little; passing on a vintage Hamilton or Buren (one of the few exceptions to dead brands) with a 663/666 microrotor movement with decent case/dial in running condition; assuming vintage watches in gold won't make a comeback in your lifetime; wearing a leather strap on a watch you plan to use around water or for serious work outdoors; wearing a watch without a screwdown crown anywhere but the office or the opera; opening and regulating a watch yourself because you saw some guy do it on youtube with a toothpick.

Hi Teddy, I'm looking at a Laco Aachen 42 (Type B) flieger, $410 direct from Laco. I have a 7 and a half inch wrist. This one has 42 inch diameter, 11.75 mm height, 20.00 mm lug width, 50 mm lug to lug. Would that look massive on a 7.5 inch circumference wrist?

He said that the lug-to-lug width of the watch sometimes matter more than the case diameter when choosing a watch.

You can set the date ANY TIME YOU WANT unless you have a QUICK SET date and you have a QUICK SWITCH date. And, even if you do setting it by advancing/retarding time is just fine. If you do not have a quick set date, you'll be setting the date by turning the hour/minute hands anyway; that is no different from the way the watch does it in normal operation. If you do, but your date function takes minutes to an hour to move from one date to the next you are fine too. It is the "advanced" designs with a mechanism that flips the date forward in a tick that is prone to issues when set while it is the mechanism is primed. Many lower end watches lack either function!

as watch enthusiast, i know almost all points you mention. however, i think federico talks watches needs to learn FROM you on how to make money from your own store / own service provided while NOT being to pushy at the start of each and every video made. i.e. only talk at the segment when and where the service or product is relevant to any particular video. i stop watching F talks watches now. Too pushy at start of each video and most watches are over 3 to 5thousands in USD .

I never leave the strap or bracelet watch came with. I do not care how good it is. It’s coming off. Just a rule. I have tried desperately to kill a timeex with 30m wr. I did everything, hot tub, even leaving crown pulled out. It still kept going. I eventually gave it away & it is still working nearly 10 years later.

What do you think of carl zeyten. Pls somebody elaborate. I've been looking at watch content for weeks now, I come to realise a normally cheap watch isn't being considered under a thousand pounds. Well I bough my carl von zeyten(automatic) for 300 euros. I'd love some information or conversation

I have found that just about all watches from China in the $50 or less range, automatics, are fairly accurate. However, none of the rotors spin freely enough to actually wind the watch, meaning you must hand wind the watch daily. I learned this after buying several cheap Chinese watches. Other than this fact, the Guanqin mentioned should be fairly accurate, 10 sec. either way per 24 hr. period is what I have found. Good luck!

Are there certain States that people are more likely not to wear a watch than wear one. I've recently had a Man say watches is a woman's thing. Yet a woman heard that comment responded. A watch is a man's thing and time should be important to any man.

If you like it go for it. I think it looks a little childish, I wouldn't use it as an everyday wear. The gold tone on the case is a really yellow tone, imo it looks more like a toy but if you're young and you want something like that then cool. I'm 39 but probably 15+ years ago I would've chosen it over the srp775 and srp777.

First a date bar does not have the same value it did in the 1960's. Today people use their smartphones. If there is a true function of a watch in the twenty-first century it is to tell the time fast. There is nothing better than a plain-faced watch Next point buy a decent watch to start with. I wear Vintage Omegas. I am wearing an Omega Seamaster 30 in 18k rose gold. I have several Omegas in steel too. Omega is a great watch!

Biggest mistake - buying a watch you will never wear. For example, you spend thousands on a dress watch because you like it's look but you work a construction job and never attend any formal events. Or buying a watch with a dial color that completely clashes with your wardrobe (I have a Seiki Alpinist I just can't seem to wear because the green dial doesn't fit with any of my clothes).

also changing straps on normal watches is way harder than fucking around with apple watches tho, so like yes you can change a normal watch strap but I would put zero effort into doing that vs having an apple watch I know is easy as fuck to change. effort vs giving a shit

If you want a nice watch, go to amazon and look up FANMIS watches. Some of the nicest watches you will ever buy for the money. Only watches under $20. I have bought many and most of the watches I bought are now selling for 2 to 3 times for what I paid !!! They make terrific gifts.

The bigger the purchase, the longer you should sleep over your decision. (also depends on your budget) When you can't stop thinking about a watch, try to see it in person before you buy it.

Hi mate I made the biggest mistake in my life way back to the Oxford day's and the fact I was clueless with the items that were all very valuable vintage items and a recent few but I gave a few to the people who were there with me on my birthday but I had lots more of them but I had them stolen from me and they must have known what they were worth but I didn't snd now ithink back to oxford and the fact that I had a lot of special watches that were sold in the years 2012 a lot of them but as I said I had some of the items in which they were all 1 off or lost in history with had to wait for the right time due to the required application of them but I will not let it be untold to the public but I will also be doing it correctly so I don't end up diapered like Kelly
