I am retired military and close to retiring from my 2nd career and was searching for a new hobby. Always made things out of wood but never did any woodcarving. I very much appreciate your video for new beginners and the basics, very good place to start. As for hand and finger protection, I just took an old pair of leather gloves and cut the thumb off one to protect my thumb and use the other for my opposite hand. Thank you for all the great tips. When approaching to learn a new project, I remember the P3 (patience, practice, and persistence)

Wood carving is an excellent hobby. I started wood carving 30 years ago to relieve stress from my job as a deputy sheriff. To me it’s like a form of meditation.

I know. People always ask "what knives?" when they're starting out. I should probably do a whole video on that. The reason I don't is because it's so subjective, and on some level, doesn't matter. That seems odd to say, but it's true. I can do the same exact carving with a dozen different knives. Flexcut is a good starter brand. The knife I use in this video is made by Mike Shipley and Lyon knives. Google: littleshavers, woodcarverssupply or leatherplus for good sources.

What brand knives are you using? What do you recommend for a beginner?
@schpoingle
@schpoingle 10 лет назад
nobody responded to this and it's gotten some thumbs up so i'll reply for other's sake, i know it's an old comment. it's a hard question because allot of quality knives come dull so the user can make their own grind and knives that come with an edge could be a bad match for the specific person. for example i started with 'flexcut' knives and i whittle and carve aggressively and they all got chipped blades immediately because flexcut knives come with a very thin grind that is great for really soft woods and little cuts. i have a lot of issues with flexcut but they sell them at some craft stores and if you can get a 40% off one item then you can get one for real cheap. the mora carving knives are pretty cheap off of amazon, much thicker but easy to sharpen. There's Helvie, Denny, Pinewood forge, deepwoodventures is awesome and he offers a beginner's knife that's cheap and a hand made knife. all come ready to carve. i started with an exacto blade. the kind little kind that goes in the round handle. it'll carve basswood fine (get that at craft stores in grab bags) and you won't have to worry about the life long art of sharpening and stropping. just change the blade when the cuts aren't as smooth.

schpoingle Roughly how much money are we talking about for a good carving knife?
@schpoingle
@schpoingle 10 лет назад
from about 20 and up. the only decent knife you can buy in a store is a flexcut. you can get them at some craft stores. research first, if it's a craft store that has the 40% off one item sometimes then wait and do that. that's the cheapest way to get a good knife that comes ready to carve. allot of pro knives come unsharpened for grinding your own edge. sharpening is really hard. i'd suggest starting with an exacto knife and get some refills for it. the sharpening is very frustrating and expensive so start with the pencil looking xacto and see if you like it. you'll be able to just switch to a fresh blade when it chips or gets dull. write me personally if you have any other questions. i'll be uploading a beginner video very soon! take care, daniel

@DJ-hi6oc
@DJ-hi6oc 7 лет назад
Nastia Tbh I am a 13 year old BOY and people told me its hopeless as well... Maybe their reason was that you are a girl (which should not matter in these cases...), but it could also be that it seems like something people don't wanna do today, cuz it seems "ancient"? Girls can do everything boys can do, and the opposite is the same... Only thing girls can't do (or dont want to do cuz its probably not accurate) is pee standing up. Even boxing and heavy lifting is possible for girls. But everything needs determination and hard work in order for anything to succed... Some girls just go and think that they are less good than some boys, and some boys think that girls are better. I call bullshit. A human is a human. So don't pay attention to them. All humans are humans. gender doesn't matter in most abilities.
