He's using that self-sticking athletic tape, wrapped a few times around each finger, as a finger guard. It's the stuff that's kinda stretchy. I've had medical folks use it to hold a piece of gauze against a needle stick where they drew blood from my arm. You can get it in a bunch of different colors on Amazon.
To do more twists I think it would be best to first round off the middle section, and then draw your guidelines from the corners. If you just leave it as a solid block and do more twists, the edges of the block will create an uneven thickness through the twist as opposed to the smooth transition you have here.
you make things that really small think try Christmas ornaments. think rain deer would cool start. same basic design but change slight for each reindeer. there rude off, dancer , prancer, vicine, commit. caint think other rain deer name. bell on rain deer remove make bracelet. or leave on deer as hang on tree.
