Hi! Just wanna say I like your video My favorite trick with finger finish- put a tiny bit of dish soap You can also take a bolt and run it on the corner and pull off the excess so you’re left with a super minimal finish on your corner.

Hi Jesse - As so many others have stated, yours is BY FAR the best instructional video for a DIY concrete counter I was able to find. Thank you! I used it to make a fireplace hearth. It came out amazing except for one small glitch. For some reason, I'm able to see outlines of the wire reinforcement on the surface. I see in other comments you referred to this as "ghosting." My slab is 1.5" like yours. Perhaps my cement mix was a little too watery and it settled closer to the surface during vibrating. I used countertop mix. I don't think it was too watery, but who knows. Anyway, I wouldn't mind natural color variations since it is concrete after all, but the visible "grid" does take away from the natural look a little. There are spots of the surface that are darker like where the grid lines are and it almost seems as though there is a residue or something in the pores causing the lighter spots. I included a close up photo as well so you can zoom in and hopefully see what I mean. I have thoroughly polished with the 800 grit several times with no change. These photos were taken while it is completely dry. I have not sealed yet and was wondering if you could think of anything I might be able to try to "clean" the lighter areas so at least the grids lines blend in a little better. Thoughts? photos.app.goo.gl/6d5mUvg7XCADpFjNA photos.app.goo.gl/xczbMPRhvs8B7snv8 One other question. Since this is a hearth, I am concerned about using an acrylic (film) sealer rather than a penetrating sealer. Fireplace tools would likely scratch a film over time. My plan is to use a penetrating sealer with the wax. Is my thinking correct on this?

Thanks! Yeah I'd go 2" for those. That will be cool, let me know how they turn out. The same process can be used to make and smooth them, however for a bench I'd use a basic concrete sealer from rustoleum or quikrete as it will be more durable, no need for the countertop sealer because you don't need food grade. Good luck!

Excellent video. I am considering doing this - May I ask how long the wax stays on the countertop? I probably daily clean the countertop with anti bacterial spray and once a week with bleach. I am guessing this would strip any protection? Whats your thoughts?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 2 года назад
Thanks! Don't use bleach, you'll strip everything and stain the concrete. If your using it for a countertop ish surface like I am, everything I used to seal it is food grade. You'll want to use a natural cleaner if possible. Typically the wax will last a month or 2 depending on cleaner used and how often, but over time the wax will last longer once it has a few coats applied to it. The wax I used is beeswax mixed with lemon and orange. The citrus in it not only smells good, but it also helps keep it clean because it's a natural acid, no bacteria forms

I just finished watching this RU-vid video you made and, boy, am I impressed! What you made is beautiful! I'm now inspired to make something similar - a concrete hearth for my fireplace. A question I have - and I'm hoping you have some knowledge on the subject and can offer an opinion - is if the concrete could handle the heat from a fireplace insert without cracking. The concrete hearth that I have in mind would be 5 ft long x 20 inches wide x 2 inches thick and placed directly on an existing concrete slab foundation. Also, what proportion of 'charcoal dye' did you use per sack of conc? The tone of grey is perfect. Thanks for your posting such an impressive video.
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 2 года назад
Thanks so much, glad you liked it! That's awesome man, that was my goal, to show you that you can. In terms of cracking in extreme heat, you'll probably get some minor thin cracks. The larger the reinforcement or more surface area the better, you may want to look at thin reebar or a thin wire mesh used for parging, you can find it in the concrete aisle. The stronger it is and more surface are it has to grab, the less chance for large cracks. I used 1 bottle of dye per bag of concrete, but you can go up to 2 bottles per bag if it's the quikrete dye. Hope that helps, good luck!

Thanks for the video. Thanks also for being normal and informative and not full of 'rah rah. Just made my countertop out of the Glass Fibre Concrete (GFCR) and it came out really well. Only thing I would say is that I wished I'd used as little silicon as possible - the concrete has picked up all of the change in texture and it has left an obvious mark around the edges. Especially where it had smeared a bit wide. But for a first effort I am pretty pleased.

Very beautiful, impressive and professional video. I have a question whether the concrete surface does not absorb liquids from the food and accumulates bacteria, does the sealer close it for a while or does it need to be renewed?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 3 года назад
Thanks! I appreciate that. Nope, it won't absorb liquid and bacteria. Once it's sealed with that liquid sealer I applied, and even more so after the wax it is basically no different than how a granite top behaves. Smooth and silky feeling, and just like I showed in the video, liquids and food just sit on top and can be wiped away easily. You will need to apply the sealer about once a year tho, and the wax every couple of months, depending on how often you clean it maybe a bit more often. But its quick and easy maintenance. Hope that helps

Yeah that sounds like too much, or it wasn't buffed off after it was cured on the mold before pouring. Glad the slab turned out tho. I wouldn't use any chemicals to get it off, you'll stain the concrete. Just get a blue scour pad sponge thing from the kitchen and water and buff it off. Then rewipe it with a damp rag after. If you have any stubborn stuff use a small chip or paint brush and water and poke it. Hope that helps

I vibrated for 20-30 mins hitting mostly. shocked at how many bubbles on the top surface. I will hit harder next time... but???? concrete - perhaps mine should be more wet? or i used 5000 'grade' professional cement not 6000? should i put in a bit more mortar? any ideas??
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 2 года назад
Cool! We'll now that you've tried it you can refine the process. There can be so many bubbles sometimes. Yeah, I find it vibrates easier when it's a bit wetter, but be careful because too wet and it'll be likely to crack. Just a small amount of water at a time. I know it's hard to judge, but the consistency that I had in the video was perfect, it's slightly wetter than normal. The 5000 and 6000 are pretty interchangeable so that is ok, if leave the concrete as is. I actually just made a concrete top for my bathroom vanity with a completely different process out of necessity. Maybe check that video out, might pick up some useful tips

But the liquid stuff you can add up to 2 bottles per bag of concrete I believe, I only added 1 per bag here so it could be darker still. Good luck with yours!

@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 2 года назад
Thanks, glad I could help! We'll for a truly white top you'll need to find white bagged concrete. Some places sell it, you can also buy it online but it's expensive. For White tinted concrete tho you can add a pigment to it. Titanium dioxide you can buy online can tint it. I just released a new video a month ago making my bathroom vanity top out of concrete and I show how to tint it white. Because it's a dry pigment you need to work differently with it. I suggest checking it out, it took me 4 tries to get it right, save yourself the headache since I did the trial and error

Thanks. I mean, all concrete has sand in it. For this stuff I used Quikrete 5000, or 6000. One is a white bag, one blue but both would work. Thanks. Sorry for the late response, but yes it could, however I probably wouldn't. It wouldn't happen for a really long time realistically but it's worth mentioning that the concrete will eventually either degrade or the wood will rot. They will push and pull moisture from each other
@wassytrini
@wassytrini 9 месяцев назад
Late to the game, but question... if you've constructed your counter and want to frame then pour the concrete directly, put the mesh in there, (also using the board as the base), if you don't have direct access to the base, can you just vibrate the exposed sides to get the air out, or would you have to mix the concrete thinner?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY 9 месяцев назад
There is a more specialized concrete mix you can buy for pour in place concrete tops that have defaming agents in them that forces the air out with little to no vibrating. It also has much less aggregate in it and plasticizer to help it flow out with less water. You'll need to also be good with a float and trowel because you're looking at the top so it's up to you to make it smooth. That's a whole different ball game, I suggest you look at that specifically because it's quite different than this method

vibrating it wont cause the aggregate to settle and show in the finished side? That is my only concern. I have seen these tops made with a high strength mix such as Rapid set mortar mix from Home depot, and still using the reinforcing wire. Thoughts?
@JessedoesDIY
@JessedoesDIY Год назад
Nope. Vibrating concrete is necessary. The aggregate actually pulls to the center and the cement is pushed to the outside. I'm not a fan of the mortar mix personally. That's not what it was designed for and runs a much bigger risk of curling and cracking over time.

The thumbnail was taken a few days after and that's as light as it became. I only added about 1/2 the dye I could have. Just over lengthed first side flushed to one corner of the base leaving a wing, then did the next side clockwise. Leaving each sidewall with just one "wing" for that same sort of grab handle. Worked a treat an eliminates any need for needing any sort math or precision ..or even measuring for sidewall length cuts. 𝒯𝒽𝒶𝓃𝓀 𝒴o𝓊 for the carwax mold release idea. Excellent!

Instead of trying to compact the concrete by shaking it by hand, you could insert 8 larger carriage bolts all around the frame of the concrete formwork you are building (always depends on the size of the object, but here I am thinking of the plate size you choose) , these are the ones with the hexagonal head and a coarse thread for wood, in European metric dimensions I would choose a 15 or 17 screw, length 30 or 40 mm; Pre-drill, countersink the screw until the head rests on the frame, i.e. has direct contact. Then you take an old hammer drill (or a pneumatic one, if you already have that luxury [Ryobi has a small, relatively inexpensive one; I think the batteries always cost more than the machines]), then turn one of the same size or even larger Carriage screw into the drill chuck, turn on the impact mechanism, place the screw one by one on the screws inserted all around and start to "shake" with feeling. You have to test the frequency a bit. But experience shows that this brings more than all the hand rocking. Hopefully Google Translate has found the right English words now, but I think most people here are smart enough to grasp the concept... And since I haven't read all the comments - it's possible that someone else has already presented the concept - no copy right infringement intended ;-)

1/4" might work, it might not. It may actually be too thick for such a small circle and want to snap on you depending on the material. The 1/8" material will be less likely, but do what you feel is best for your top. The material should be at HD, it may be a Masonite material, not with the melamine. Super thin plywood may also work, but just make sure to clear coat it first so you can wax it

@@forestmorris2996 I have used Formica for the edges of the form on several projects. It works wonderfully. You can get a pretty tight radius and then move right on to a radius in the opposite direction without any flat spots at all. Sometimes there is a "grain" to the formica and when you bend it, it breaks. If that happens try bending in another direction. I am talking about using just the Formica, not after it is glued down to something.

It doesn’t look as sleek as yours but I’m proud because the result is very aesthetic. I’m going to redo it because I poured a bit too much water and although it’s been holding well I wouldn’t trust it for long without a base under it (it currently has the melamine that was on top under it). I did it with nails instead of screws because I had very limited tools, and the bottom part is not as pretty because I couldn’t cut the pieces to size, so the mold would’ve been too thick if I had poured concrete to the top (all I had to work with was a handsaw, a hammer, nails and a few other things). All in all, great video, great instructions. I know the second one will be smooth af. Edit: grammar
