Rachelle This has got to be one of best shown, and explained tutorials that I've seen. Thank you so much, and thanks for the extra info on the brushes. And I love your hair.
I have watched about 50 videos or more on chalk paint and waxing. And your video by far is the very best one I have ever seen. Thank you so so much !!!!!!
I am so glad I clicked on your channel. I started watching and thought ohhh she's a paint snob. Little spicy she is... Then it dawned on me, the way you pronounce certain words and say so matter of fact; I am hearing my own most dear and talented aunt who passed away 18 yrs ago and I started to cry. Anyway, we are building a cabin and I am chalk painting the cabinets next summer. So I am going to start refreshing my own small pieces around the house. I am going to do so under your tutorials.
You won me over with your smile! I'm trying to learn to whitewash and stencil verses on a wooden plaque. I'm doing it as a hobby, I'm stuck at home recovering from stage 4 Cancer and stage 3 kidney disease... Great video!🇺🇸🙏❤
Oh my dear! I wish for you a fast recovery and good days. I do have a white wash video but not a stencil one that I can think of. Although, less paint is more when stenciling :) try adding some to your stencil brush or roller then off loading it on a paper towel before using it.
Thoroughly enjoyed your video. I learned a lot of important tips and techniques, thank God you love to add the 'adds', sometimes those are the best dollops of wise advice. I will be checking out the rest of your videos so I can step up my 'paint-game'. Have a beautiful day, my friend. Oh, and a lot of the comments were informative too, as were the questions presented to you.
I’m going to be painting distressing and antiquing a French provincial dining table , my first attempt, and your tutorial was a great source of information. You’ve explained the steps so clear now I know exactly what to do….I think lol
I am so glad I found your video!!! This is precisely what I was looking for. Thank you for the step-by-step instruction. I will be starting on my antique gossip bench and didn't know where to start. You made a new follower out of me.
Hi Rachelle - You have a doppelganger out there, my good friend Michelle. However, that's only part of the reason I love your channel. I've gotten really nice results on my first attempt at chalk painting. Thanks for you such a great tutorial.
What a wonderful tutorial! Your instructions are clear and your manner, friendly. This is my first time painting furniture with chalk paint and it's a little intimidating. I feel more confident now, thank you! (I'll try not to goob it up! 😆)
Hey Beautiful! I just purchased a Marsh Hoosier Cabinet. It's in decent condition but needs to be prepped and painted ... HOPEFULLY in chalk paint. Would love to see you highlight a hoosier project! Thanks for you/your tutorials!
Hello! Thank you for your kind words! Chalk paint is perfect for that type of project! I will put it on my list and I am sure you will do great! For instant inspiration I would suggest checking on Pinterest. I have tons of boards but you may possibly find some inspiration in this one ❤️ pin.it/62z8S3ynr
Lovely. This video is great for hearing impaired and deaf crafters. She speaks perfectly for lip readers. That plus auto gen subtitles should be enough for most. One in eight people is hard of hearing. Would be great if RU-vid added tags for "good for hearing impaired."
Thank you for removing the drawer & hardware before painting it! I see so many videos where they just paint over it and that's just cheap & lazy to me. If someone wanted to change the painted over hardware, it would have to be the exact same size or larger - my OCD just won't allow it, LOL!
🤣 yep! I agreed with you! Plus changing out hardware is one of the best ways to change the look of something, so why make that harder on yourself :) glad you liked it ❤️
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial, so thorough and easy to understand! I have an old writing bureau that I want to upcycle, it's just been sitting there for 2 years and I keep putting it off because I don't know what I'm doing! I feel more confident now thanks to you.
Thank you SO MUCH!!! This gives me great confidence in trying to repurpose furniture with chalk paint . Looking forward to watching and learning from your videos and following you on Facebook and Instagram 😊
I loved your video...straight forward and easy to follow..thank you ..I think I may be ready to finally start a project. I really love your apron too..very cute.
Your tutorial was great!! I've watched a few other videos, and spoken with my sister-in-law who's done this before, and your video was the best. Between you and SiL I think I'm going to get this :)
No worries and thank you! We are all new to everything at sometime ❤️ thats kind of a loaded answer. On one hand yes, you need to clear wax before you dark wax. This will allow you to manipulate the dark wax and not change the actual paint color in the process. BUT as in all art maybe you want to change the color. 😜 for example if I paint something a light tan color but I want it to look like a wood tone I may skip the clear wax and go straight to dark wax. This will basically stain the paint the color of wax. This also works the same for other colors of wax. Annie Sloan makes white wax. So if you skip clear wax and put white wax on paint it will lighten/white wash it. I guess all that is to say is that whatever color the first layer of wax is that touches the paint is what color you are going to stain that paint with because wax and chalk paint combine to make one. Hope this helps and I didn’t just complicate the issue more 😜❤️
Thanks for the idea Nice if you like distressed I don’t so I will skip all that especially spending the money on paint and waxes and everything I like a more perfect look
Hi dear gr8 job ur precious instructeur.dear I want ask 1 thing that chalk paint never removes?because when you wipe the table that the tables color was removed please dear rply me. Love from Pakistan ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Oh wow you respond quickly I have a got question I just painted my old cherry oak coffee table set I coated double layers the finishing of paint isn’t that clean I’m not happy so what should I do and it’s not fresh I let it dry
Hello! Depending on why you aren’t happy with it, there are a variety of solutions. But I’ll try to cover what most people have issues with. If you don’t like the brush stroke look you could have either watered down the paint while painting or sand with a fine grit sanding sponge after it dried to smooth it out. Sometimes if you are painting a light color over cherry stain, the cherry color can bleed through. If that is the issue, wipe or spray a layer of shellac. Then add another layer of paint. The shellac would seal in the cherry. Not sure what you mean by clean. If it just looks messy you could be using too much paint? It’s best to spread out as much as possible and thin coats are better than thick. Hope that helps some.
This video is awesome! I should have watched it before I started my project. I used chalk paint on our bathroom vanity. I painted and then used poly on it. It changed the color and changed the look. I thought I would sand it down a bit and distress the corners. Thoughts on using wax to cover it eventhough there still could and probably still will have poly in some places?
Hey! Glad to help! There is nothing wrong with using poly either (just changes the final finish like you said) I have videos on how I poly cabinets too, although wax is my preferred method due to ease and look. You can’t really just put wax on top of poly, I mean you could, but it’s not going to have anything to soak into. I would suggest either giving it a pretty decent sand first or painting another layer of chalk paint, then waxing that layer. Think of poly as something that sits on top of paint and wax something that soaks into a porous paint and creates a bond with it. Neither way is bad :)
I typically just do soap and water where needed. Or dust with a dry lint rag. I also have seen a variety of natural products work great, like thieves cleaning spray. Mostly I would just stay away from pledge. It has been know to break down the wax after prolonged use.
Hey! It certainly, technically can. And I have done it. But it isn’t my favorite look. All depends on what you want in the end. It’s yours, do what makes you happy 😘😘❤️❤️
One thing you really didn't discuss with this piece of furniture was the natural grain of oak and how it won't disappear as it appears to have done for some strange reason in this visual. You can see the natural wood grain in the introduction where they show the close up and it may be what some people find attractive, but if I wanted to completely disguise the oak grain, can I achieve that using Annie Sloan chalk paint? I've seen in other video's using drywall mud as a base coat first. But can I still use this chalk paint and get full coverage with no tannin color bleedthrough, ect? Would more coats help? I like that there is no sanding required but I imagine if I wanted to hide the oak grain, I wouldn't be able to get away without sanding or some king of base coat. Is there a product in the Annie Sloan line specifically for this purpose?
Hello. If you want to hide the wood grain you need to use a special primer/grain filler product first. Then paint as you desire. I would stay away from drywall mud though. You could possibly use wood filler but I would use this product instead amzn.to/43x7Ypa
Hello. I am sorry, I haven’t used that one, so I don’t have a for sure answer for you. At least I would be sure to clean it well and give it a good scuff sand before painting.
Thank you so much for easily understood instructions. I was considering your technique for a makeup dresser. Is wax finish still ok for top surface, due to some makeup cleaners?
Hello! You certainly could. It has held up fine on all my surfaces But for more heavily cleaned surfaces I recommend Annie Sloan Lacquer instead of wax.
I have a coffee table thst i used blue chalk paint. I used lacquer to seal the paint but soon a yellow color started coming through. It may have had an oil based paint originally. Now I want to use another color on my table. Should I use a stain blocker before I paint on the new color to take care of the yellow that previously came through the blue color that I first painted it with? What kind of stain blocker would you suggest? Thank you so much!
Hello! That does sound exactly like the tannins or stains coming through. Sometimes lacquer itself can pull them through the paint. Although the layer of lacquer may stop it from happening again. So you may be fine to paint again or you could put a layer of shellac on or a layer of stain blocking primer. I like kilz or bulls eye 123. Hope that helps :)
It’s hard to know exactly, but when I am guessing you mean is a try of paint washed look? If so you water the paint down in the thinner areas. Although it is best to sand those areas down some to have the paint soak into something. Sorry if that’s not what you mean 😬
Technically you can paint over Annie Sloan wax with Annie Sloan paint. (Not all brands you can do that with) how well it sticks and to what degree you are painting over it varies your results. If you are touching up a spot, slap the paint on there, let dry and wax the new paint area. If you are repainting with a solid coat and your wax has been cured for a long time, slap it on and go, then rewax. If you just waxed recently, and it’s thick, you can take mineral spirits and try to get the excess wax off before painting (you can do this at anytime, but works really well when it’s not cured) then repaint and rewax. Hope that answer helps. I know there are lots of variables in that answer, sorry! 😬❤️
You can paint Annie Sloan paint over Annie Sloan wax. I like to try to take off as much of the wax as possible, or let it cure for a couple weeks. If you would like to take off any excess wax, use mineral spirits and wipe it off. Then paint.
Hello!! I have a dresser I want to paint.Your video answered all my questions. I also decorate bottles and vases. Is there any need to varnish before or after the chalk paint and clear wax? Great video thank you!!
Hello Cheryl! Thank you! I am glad I could help! I don’t know why you would need to varnish them, you should be able to do them the same way as shown here :) have fun with it!!
I made the mistake of using dark wax with no clear wax. It’s too dark, do I have to sand it before repainting it? Do I need to let the wax completely cure first?
Hello! Don’t worry, we have all done this a time or two in our painting lives! I would suggest to take as much wax off as possible with mineral spirits, then paint over. You do not need to let it cure first.
