Canoe Show host Helen Reeves looks at basic safety precautions and preparing for canoeing trips to help you stay safe. This video was originally produced in 2013 for Canoe England.
Really good advice given in this video ..Preparation really is key.. plan your trip and be aware of obstacles that you may come up against for example locks and weir’s .. make sure you have a good idea of how long your journey is expected to take as to not end up in the dark with poor visibility .. make someone aware of your planned start and end location and also when you expect to reach your end destination.. Kayaking is a fantastic way to relax in beautiful surroundings.. Thankyou and Safe Kayaking!
So much stuff! I've just got a 2man inflatable kayak & had planned to buy life vests & go for a paddle along the local canals, but £45/yr for a licence?! What damage is an inflatable kayak going to do to a 40 ton steel hulled narrowboat?!
A kayaking (canoe) LICENSE? That's the exact opposite of here in the States. Here, users of waterways have legal access to the waterways and the banks up tot he usual high-water line.
Been kayaking for 2 decades on sea ,rivers, and lakes, never paid ,nobody’s asked me for money, and if they did could they catch me.not wanting to diss the lady ,but for me one essential spare paddle in two halves bungled to the back, don’t wanna end up in shit creek without a paddle
Hi Helen. Great video will certainly help most newbies. Am not a novice and normally kayak over tidal estuaries. Thinking of doing some inland rivers for a change but was a bit shocked about the £45.00 for the UK Canoe licencing pa! The alternative £24.00 for a 30 day licence from the waterway authorities probably not much better? Really, don't want to sound tight regarding funding because this money goes toward keeping these waterways open which is a good cause. Though for those that just want to pop inland for one or two day per year this would seem a bit steep! This is a shame! Do wonder whether the funding should actually come from the local authorities and maybe not from those that are choosing to use a river that was probably there for a thousand years?...My personal opinion is that NO RIVER or STREAM in the UK should ever be owned by local authority or private land ownership!.... Anyway that's my thoughts! The best assimilation might be compared to the common land access rulings in place for some parts of the UK :)
Totally agree. I would understand to pay for paddling canals, where they were build and require repairs and maintenance, but pay for paddling in rivers sounds same as pay for breathing air.
@@brolisimo Indeed would agree about 'Man Made Canals' . Though our natural streams were never their to be owned or dictated about? TBH its an absolute disgrace to see it any other way?
Hi Terry, as long as you have a licence or British Canoeing membership, you are fine to paddle. It's worth noting that British Canoeing membership covers you for civil liability insurance too. We'd obviously always recommend knowing what you are doing before heading out, but canals are a good place to start and are great for relaxing paddles. You might find our gopaddling.info website useful for hints and tips on getting started! Happy paddling!
I know its just that we often find river paddlers on the sea thinking "it looks calm enough and the waves aren't too big". Even the RNLI advice was poor (the last time I looked) and they promised to update it. I learnt the hard way. Good of you to provide the clip. Keep safe.
