Im just now learning that diving is a thing. I figured it was but I was just waiting for soemthign to happen and the game would tell me about it. I had a wetsuit this whole time 😅

Oh no! They do eventually tell you if you have the Island Life 101 app, or if you start a new island and Tom Nook runs out of things to talk about during his island announcements. I think Timmy and Tommy also tell you how to use the wetsuit the first time you buy one from them. But it's also pretty easy to accidentally skip over those. How is diving going?

Ty I didn’t know that you had to empty out your pockets I was wondering why I couldn’t get in

You can go swimming with full pockets, but if you don't have space for what you catch, then you can't keep it (or you have to swap it with another sea creature), so I recommend emptying them in case you catch something really good.
