I greatly underestimated how many passes and how much lather is required. I only got my feather styling razor last week, but I am alas an amateur with a straight razor. Thank you for the tutorial. I already learned so much.
@jacoporubini4308
@jacoporubini4308 4 года назад
AzizidarkReborn not so many passes nor so much lather (and for sure not so liquid a lather) are necessarily required. Depending on your technique and the specific context (shaving time of the day, skin condition, post-shower etc.) the variables can change a lot. and with technique and experience, both time, lather quantity and number of passes will decrease.

Thank you sir and greetings from merrie olde England! I've just had my first shave with a straight razor and following your advice I managed to nick myself only once. That idea of shaving a side stroke before shaving upwards was invaluable, made my shave a lot easier. It was the closest most satisfying shave I've ever had. I hope to get quicker as the months go on. Thank you once again!

i dont think most people consider a disposable blade in a holder a straight razor, no matter how it might resemble one in appearance. many of the advantages of a "real" straight razor are lost with disposables. most importantly they dont have any flex. mostl straight razors are hollow ground with a verry thin feather edge thats usually atleast half the width of the blade, sometimes more. this thin feather edge flexes.and contours to your face, providing a close comfortable shave. the other advantage is having something that lasts for decades with maintanance, unlike having to buy multiple blades for your disposable setup. having the satsfaction and developing the skill of producing the edge you use to shave with is also part of the experience imo, as well as being able to fine tune that edge to your preferances. i would suggest you get a vintage sheffield or solingen razor, they can be had for suprisingly little, and learn how to hone and strop it.

While he is able to shave the way he does, I wouldn't say this is the ideal way to shave, especially for those just starting with single blade shaving. Just a small disclaimer, that I am by no means trying to be a troll and just criticize for the sake of criticizing. One of the critical considerations is keeping the skin in tension as floppy skin (not saying u have wrinkles at all sir) will minimize the chance for cuts as well as razor bumps. Also, you mentioned using both hands for shaving, and while this is really personal preference, I think for beginners, it would be better to discover what works best for yourself based on each person's dexterity. Apart from that, a nice and concise video! Cheers!

Thanks for the video. I have a Feather SS folder and a iKon El Jeffe which uses the same blades as demonstrated. Hereditary palsy causes minor trembles so this may be as far as I go on my shaving journey but I can assure you that a single edge in whatever form is way better then the 15 DE's I have.

The Gentleman's Club that was a cute response. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I have no interest in seeing your chest. Perhaps I could have worded my comment, differently. My inference to your shirt was that you were slinging shave cream all over the place. Your collar was even soaked in shave cream. You're skilled with the razor, but seeing you sling shave cream all over your shirt just seemed laughable. With all that said, I found your video immensely entertaining and will continue to watch them. I just bought a feather shaver and was looking at video reviews. That's how I stumbled on your comedy channel.

The Gentleman's Club great response. Very funny. However, I'm sorry to disappoint you. I have no interest in your chest. My inference was that you were slinging shave cream all over your shirt. Your collar was even soaked in shave cream. You do an excellent job with the feather. I'm sorry but it really was laughable, seeing you sling shave cream all over the place. With that said, I find your videos very entertaining and will continue to watch them. I just bought a feather shaver and I was looking at reviews. That's how I stumbled on your channel. @GentlemanMasterclass
@GentlemanMasterclass 7 лет назад
allan knight Thank you for watching. It becomes less funny when you really, really look back on it in hindsight in scope. It's just soap, we use it to wash ourselves and use it to wash our clothes anyways (not shaving soap but soap). I cut with the shirt on for multiple reasons. Not just that people aren't interested in seeing me without one, but additionally the studio apartment I live in Tokyo just doesn't have an appealing bathroom area. So I do everything in part of the main studio room just to kind of have something happening there behind me, instead of just being in a small boring room with white walls and bad lighting. PS. The soap flies all over the floor as well, but it dries so I don't even really bother cleaning it after the videos.

I think one of the better shaving exhibits, missed bugger all, not hurry is the key. I use hot water but not immerse brush fully and maybe my softer water but lather is in 5 to 15 seconds, I never rinse brush or flush soap from shave soap mug, I use a enamel camping tea mug to place the soap in and just top up when soap getting down. Some soap $10 to $25 per cake. Sadly my Palmolive shave stick soap stopped manufacture, well no longer at supermarket. I purchased online Arko shave stick made in Turkey box of 12 was about $3 per stick it is brilliant better than previous and smells just like the soap the barber used when I was a kid back in the 60's. Good soap and badger brush is the key, though cheapie when traveling still does the job, thanks buddy good video.

@GentlemanMasterclass
@GentlemanMasterclass 5 лет назад
Copy Right you most certainly can. When people do wet shaving with a shaving soap mostly they are just looking to do things the old fashioned way. Artisan shaving soap makers do have a few advantages over foam though. Even though foam is faster to work with, the artisan makers put prime ingredients inside their soap like aloe vera amongst other things to help your face heal better after using a razor, or they have aromatic properties as well. No one can deny the ease of use of foam however.

Great and usefull video, appreciate the effort and passion you put in it. BTW, anyone has he's own way to shave but there are basic rules i see are not correctly applied during the video. In my point of view there are three points i see in the video aren't exactly right. 1) Brush is completely immersed into water, that procedure will damage the knot . 2) Lather is too loose, it means there's too much water in it and it does not help glide the razor neither help the skin and follicles to be protected . 3) Razor angle: it's to close to the skin, that might be right for the second, third pass, certainly not the first . First pass requires a different blade/razor angle.

I actually bought this as a groomsmen gift with the proguard blades. I'm having a challenge cutting with it as I've never used a straight razor. The blades don't seem to trim me at all, even with some dangerous force to my face. It just pulls the hair out. What am I doing wrong?
@GentlemanMasterclass
@GentlemanMasterclass 7 лет назад
Replying back by mobile phone, my computer is rendering a 4K video at the moment so forgive any and all typos please. You not cutting any hair could be any factor of things. It could be your blade technique, it could be the Shaving soap or lotion you're using, or it could be not enough experience. It took me about a month to get down a decent enough technique to cut my hair with this razor and those same blades you have. Even furthermore I was already using some disposable straights since about 2008 that weaned me a great deal into this bigger heavier razor once I got it. So it's not like I just jumped into it overnight. I did a video about those weaning blades. I recommend trying a pack of those or something similar to get you started the right way, and a safer way. You shouldn't have to use dangerous force. When I find the link I'll put it here.
@GentlemanMasterclass
@GentlemanMasterclass 7 лет назад
The link to that video is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--Gjh42eYqkE.html Also make sure your face is well lubricated, that you're shaving in the direction of hair growth, and that you're shaving at a 30 degree angle. That razor is top heavy, so don't force it. Remember, let the razor do the work.

@GentlemanMasterclass
@GentlemanMasterclass 6 лет назад
Willy Ward the beauty of this blade is you really don't need to rinse it more or often. If it didn't Dawn upon you yet it's a single straight blade, it doesn't clog. The only reason you may still rinse the blade just as I do is out of habit or for aesthetic to not see all the soap caked up on the side. Cartridge razors need rinsing often because they clog with hair in the furrows in-between the blades, and will cut worse if you don't clear it out often.

Not sure if this video supposed to be serious or not, but looking at the angle you're holding the blade really makes one wonder why others don't even try a straight razor. Wherever they show, whatever they write, it is always 30 degrees from the skin, no matter where the skin is or what angle your face contour may be. When you shaved your neck (9:01 and on), the blade is nearly at 90 degrees to your skin. That's a scary move man. And going against the grain, oh, man. Never! 12:14. That's when I question if the video was to teach or to mock the usage of the straight blade. The shirt is your call, but the blade is not forgiving when in the wider angle.
@GentlemanMasterclass
@GentlemanMasterclass 6 лет назад
Thank you but I don't need nobody to tell me what I'm doing right or wrong when I'm the one who has been doing this for years now and don't cut myself, I haven't cut myself in this video either. Furthermore no one has watched my video and come back to me and said they cut themselves following my methods either. It's advice and recommended you cut at 30 degrees, of course that's common knowledge, but it's not 30 degrees all the time 100% of the time. You get a feel "of your own face" and "do what works for you". And no I wasn't cutting my face at 90 degrees. That's just your assumption. I'm tired of entertaining these comments because a lot of people are saying the same thing without knowing the details and furthermore without looking at the comment section to see if someone already said the same thing as you (which they have). Everyone has an opinion and everyone wants to be a critic these days.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I think you validated what I wrote by writing that others said the same thing. I didn't copy other's text. Opinions are personal choices. Facts are not personal choices. Keep shaving and take it easy. This is not science. To each its own. Thanks again.

Where'd you find that razor and blades for it friend?
@GentlemanMasterclass
@GentlemanMasterclass 8 лет назад
Hey friend. You caught me while I'm on uploading a new video now. The razor and blades are both made in and come from Japan. You can buy anywhere international in the world however. Amazon.com would be the best starting point for someone looking to buy them. Check the video description, I probably have links.

There is no hard fast rule that says you have to do 3 passes. This is what I have heard other professionals say. And I do believe that's They are right.

@@GentlemanMasterclass In reality, it’s just a depends on the situation. I will shave and I have to shower and do three passes . It will depend upon how much time I have. I rather enjoy my shave than rush through it.

Bad lather density and he doesn't strech the skin which is very important.

Ill just stick with a safety razor. Cant stand the other razor that gets clogged. But I will say I am tempted to go with a straight razor.

This thing is not so bad aside from the initial learning curve that involves some nicks. "Ma, somebody call a doctor! I'm bleeding out!" Just as with everything else it feels like second nature the more you use it, and those accidents become less or non-existent.

Wtf would u pay 200 bucks for a shitty bowl and a badger when u can get a captain's choice copper bowl and a very nice synthetic and superior brush for less than 80 bucks? Also you add Way too much water to the soap it's way too runny no wonder it disapates fast. Unless you use the same soap everyday or every other day it's bad to expose the Puck to water unless of course it's a williams mug soap like Puck which needs it, otherwise the scent and longevity takes a nose dive. Also badger brushes holds more water but hogs lather sure they are soft but pointless nowadays tho personal preference.
