If you cannot lower your feed dog,, you can also put your stitch length at 0, your feed dog doesn't move and you can control the stitch length by how fast your machine goes and how fast you move your fabric.

Excellent tutorial. I am having a terrible time trying to learn FMQ. I have broken needles and had thread breaks. it has been difficult. BUT this helps me to see what makes the stitches bigger or smaller. I think my machine is too high on a table. Thank you

Thanks for that. I am trying to be brave enough to try. You have given me a bit more confidence.

Thank you Irene 💕 I'm going to use my fabric for the new QAL. I realize I will not be able to use all my fabric in my lifetime. 😁 You're a great teacher. I like how you start with basics.

This is a great basic fmq beginning. you explain everything in detail and thank you for that. I don't mind the music that is low in the background at all being as you are trying to hide the machine noise. Thank you for being so considerate even in something as minute as that...

Thank you! Best intro I’ve seen. I’m ready to do this now. I have a 570 QE.

Hoi Irene. Erg leuk om te zien hoe jij de basis uitlegt en laat zien hoe het er gaat uit zien. Heb er zeker wat aan.

Great tutorial! My first attempt at FMQ was also the meandering stitch. It reminds me of jig saw puzzle pieces. My favorite part of quilting is the design/piecing stage. By the time I get to the quilting, I am out of practice again. So I am going to challenge myself and join the QAL.

If you cannot lower your feed dogs, you can turn your stitch length to zero for them to stop moving.

Thanks for this. I want to learn this skill this week. I do have a stitch regulator so I have advantages but I have yet to get the hang of it.

This was a great video! Do you need to change to a STRAIGHT STITCH plate on your BERNINA for free motion quilting? I noticed you had a different stitch plate on your 770 QE… You are always so positive and encouraging! Thank you so much for your helpful videos!

Whoops, yes normally I sew with the straight stitch plate. But if forgot to change it after a different project. I think this is a nice blog post to learn more about different stitch plates: weallsew.com/why-use-three-different-stitch-plates/

Will the straight stitch plate on the Bernina help with my FMQ stitches? I have a Bernina 475 that did not come with that plate. I took a class on FMQ and really struggled. I saw that you DID have the straight stitch plate on… the one with the orange square… Just wondering if it makes a difference when FMQ to have that straight stitch plate! Thanks Irene! Sorry if I was confusing!

I have a quilt in 3 sections. I’m trying to remember the method of sewing together as we did in your last QAL

Her videos for the Sugaridoo QAL are still up. It might help to review those.

Any tips on setting the correct tension? Free motion on my Bernina B530 with the regulator looks fine on top but I get loops on the back when I try to meander even at the slowest possible speed. Which needle size do I need for 50wt Aurifil?

Meandering is the hardest!!!! Feathers are nothing in comparison :-)

I can't do meandering. I don't like it. Is there a way to get the hang of it? I

That’s how I felt at first. Practice does make it easier.

One thing that has helped me is to doodle it on scrap paper for awhile.
