I personally absolutely love the pen and ink hatching style. I'm always reminded of old R. Crumb illustrations. Also, in case it isn't obvious to everyone: you need a very thin pen to have good hatching.

Excellent video! I think where I struggle sometimes is when the perspective it's straight on but looking up, and you have a slight overhanging roof, it's deciding what direction the hatches should go in that example

Lots of great examples, thank you! In the house at about 5:30, you have solid lines across the front of the house demarcating the shadow/light seperation in addition to the cross hatching. It seems pretty effective for that drawing but is it good in general - is there a better (more organic looking) way to lay down the edge of a sharp shadow?

You’re right. It’s not the best way. At times I use dotted lines. I was just in a bit of a hurry, truth be told. 😳

Stephen. I'd love to purchase your course but honestly a full year subscription of Class 101 is quite expensive, especially knowing that only part of that money will be directed to you. I'd be happy to pay a monthly sub while tackling your course but unfortunately that option is not available.

That’s understandable. My course there is not freehand drawing, it’s based on a grid and pencil underdrawing, so it may not suit you anyway if you like these videos. I do give one hour critiques of drawings and give direction for future focus. However, I do charge for this.
