Me watching the entire thing: 1:05:10 - "It's nothing special" You need more self-confidence so here's my heartfelt compliment. As a beginning editor who has tripped and fallen through terrible walkthroughs, you manage to cover several things that most "youtubers" don't cover, leading to so much pain later on. TL;DR - Watching you edit was the most impactful part of watching this start to finish. Color Correction: I didn't realize how different it actually looks, and this is something I should spend more time on upfront. It's good for you to start with this Markers: You mark the timeline vs the layer for the music, making it easier to see no matter where you're at in your edit. I can't tell you how many tuts tell you to mark the music layer. I've had to drop down layers next to the music timeline way too many times. Pre-composing: The grouping function of AE is often under-utilized in other tutorials, leading viewers to believe it's uncommon. It's often the best way to preserve effects, and simplify next steps. You do so much pre-composing, and it's a relief to someone who thinks you can do it too much. It teaches editors to organize better, and coming from a graphic design background, this is one of the most important fundamentals of any Adobe software. You did a great job showcasing this. Masking/Rotoscoping: These are methods that make transitions and effects really powerful if done intentionally, and I think you showcased all aspects that are important in a short time. Twixtor: Removing non-moving frames - Never would have thought to do this. Null Layers: I learned bad habits initially from plug-ins/templates on how to do transitions in AE. Using Null Layers allows you to keep a continuous movement, make complicated transitions between clips manually, all while preserving the initial comp in its form in case you need to do any further adjustments to it. It also allows you to edit transitions much easier since the first null is for the in transition and the second is used for the out (Organization once again). Effect Positions: This sounds really dumb, but I've adjusted position using purely x/y values for everything in AE. When you showed the Position marker for the minor movements of the eye to attach the flare effect, I realized how much easier it is than I was making it. Twitch Shake (Slide/Light + Seed): You taught me that the Twitch effect can hide transitions very well when you mix in motion blur. I never thought to use that, and it makes sense why you bring the start of that adjustment layer 20 frames of the previous clip specifically for the ramp up of the effect to assist in hiding it. Speed Ramping: Something you shared that was unique is using speed-ramping within the clip. Speed-up on the beat hit, and then slow down between the beats. This makes the clip more impactful. Most of the time, it's easy to make the mistake of adding new clips into those beats in the beginning. You Show It All: Some editors hide behind their secrets so that they can retain viewership to their productions. It's one of the most annoying things about certain creators, but I get that some may be afraid of giving away the sauce and then everyone replicating it so it's no longer special. I appreciate the fact that you show all the plug-ins you're using and how you use them in a simple manner. Your comment about this being nothing special is sad to me because you did an incredible job with this. I hope this is specific to how you helped me and maybe others. If you want to know what could be better, it's very minor as I understood everything you said, but 1 year ago, I may not have because there was a bit of context I learned that made this easily digestible. MINOR Opportunities: I do think there were some things that newer editors would have no idea what they are - Twixtor being an insane tool for FPS manipulation by generating frames, speed ramp explanation as you're making them at a simple level - You want them to start slow and then speed up toward the end so that it happens so quickly as a method to blend into a new clip. Some alternatives to these I've found: -Twixtor - There are sites that upload regular anime twixtor clips for download if you don't have this, but you're at the mercy of what they upload - the footage is pretty solid though. -Color Correction - LUTs for color, Brightness, Contrast Adjustment Layers can do 50-80% of most Color Correcting, but not as professional looking.
