With these easy steps anyone can turn a birds mouth bowl. These bowls are a great way to use those small logs and branches. I am using a 6 inch diameter piece of spalted maple to make this bowl.

Adding the epoxy and sanding it out would be easier if you don't remove the tenon, then after adding the epoxy you can put it back on the lathe for quicker and more accurate sanding. I realize, however, that he did it this for way for drying purposes. But if you start with dried wood then you could leave on the tenon for the last step with the epoxy.

I warched how smoothly you carved the inside. Even when your bowl gouge was 3-4" extended from the rest. I find it hard to not get chips or chunks dug out. Very hard to make the inside smooth, the outside is easy. What am i doing wrong?

There are a couple factors that affect how bowl gouges preform on the inside of the bowl. The grind determines the approach angle. The gouge i was using was 5/8 with a swept back or Irish grind. The rotation of the flute is another factor. The more the flute aims up the more aggressive the cut will be. If your gouge is getting grabby try rotating the flute in the same direction your making the cut. The more you rotate the flute the less would you will remove but you will get better control. Last you want the back of your handle of a bowl gouge to be slightly lower then the tip. Hope that helps.
