Dave Frank haha! Question... any videos in particular that can help me develop some improv ideas for Stella by starlight? The chord changes sometimes are a little different and therefore a little difficult to improvise over. Thanks!

Dave, dave, Dave what a well planned and excellently delivered lesson. No exception to your other classes. I am currently watching this in the airport and I am itching to go home to practise, experiment and enjoy these concepts. I love the high level breakdown of jazz into simply music elements and concepts/principles. It was a light bulb moment when you said that as I saw how that two pronged framework apply in so many areas of life and art. I am saving myself for the second lesson - so excited. I feel like a small child at Christmas. Thank you for your generosity. This is the perfect resource for someone like me who is a resourceful self-learner with not enough money for lessons at the moment. It goes without saying that you are an excellent player. However you are such a gifted teacher. I love your explanations, gags and chuckles. Always makes me laugh! Thank you a million times more. With more equipped jazz musicians out there, you are well and truly making the world a better place. Love from Australia (though currently in Malaysia for a stop over!)

Dave Frank, I am so happy I saw this video! I actually took private lessons from you while I attended Berklee probably in 2002. I really enjoyed having you as a teacher, but at that time I was focusing more on my rock band, and I regretted choosing rock over jazz piano ever since. I am now a jazz ensemble teacher at an international school in Japan, and have been pumping up my jazz chops in hopes to encourage and instill confidence in my students in their journey toward improvisation. I am going to share this with them in hopes that it clicks and will be infusing your lessons in this video into my teaching. Thanks and blessings to you!

I really mean it when i say that, i've looked through tons of jazz videos and it seems as if everybody is just talking about "here's how a chord is built up" or "Just play and play until you find out how to impro jazz".. It was so lovely to find a video which actually taught jazz on a slightly more advanced level with actual theory behind it. I've learned more this 30 min (and the 2 hours i used afterwards) than studying other videos on youtube. Thank you

I really like your thinking here. I'm classically trained so the way I relate to everything is just through the basic formal structures. Cool thing is when someone states the chords correctly and shows the transitions it makes much more sense. It seems to me that the one necessary feature of approaching jazz, especially improvisation, is an "automatic" recall of chromatic scales in every key. Thanks for what you have done here.

Cameron Weckerley It's helpful information but does not take the place of a good teacher who can provide feedback and guidance. Just dropped close to 10 grand on braces on my wife and oldest, no lesson money for me :(

Mark Gordon agreed.

Hey Mark... this is not about you and me...I am cool with whatever and I don't need the money. And, in your case I am really glad it worked out. Overall though people like Frank and his ilk are like the Napster of private music eduction.

I have been playing music for over fifty years, studied intensely for seven years, but my main instrument has been guitar. I know a lot of harmonic theory, but some simple concepts you presented in this video will help me so much as I begin to delve into the world of jazz piano. I was recently given an $8000 Clavinola workstation, so it a perfect excuse to get back into an instrument I have devoted a few years to already, to deepen my knowledge of classical music and other genres. Thank you for your clear suggestions and friendly presentation.

Mr. Frank! Thank you SO much for your exceptionally well written, played, and taught lesson! I have just started to "get" modes a bit, but your part 1 lets me see it from a logical and wise way to improvise. Next time I'm in NY I hope to see you play! Thanks a million! Craig

Dave! I took this sh*t in school and i didn't understand it at all until now. My prof gave no live examples - taught from a book we were expected to study and understand based purely from literature and recordings. it was a theory course (which should expand your knowledge) and i left feeling frustrated and more confused than when i entered. honestly your simple easy explanation cleared up so many questions i've had for years since studying jazz! thank u for the elucidation!

Thanks for the link (got a kick out of the Liberace class). As someone not formally trained (self learner) could you help me understand the D7 of the 2 5 1 progression in G minor mentioned at 24:34? Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but when I play diatonic chords in G minor, I get a D minor 7 on the 5 chord (which sounds awful) instead of a dominant 7. Is it assumed that this chord is from the harmonic minor instead of the natural minor? Thanks!
