I grew half a dozen Gryphons from seed under lights this year. They looked great but seem to drop their leaves if you look at them sideways and they have turned into 18" canes with out leaves Thanks for the tip on lighting and temperature which may be my issue here in Toronto. They're indoors now but not exactly thriving. I may have a go at cuttings to try to start over but considering seeds once again. Enjoyed the video.

I've found in my environment only 2 things produce leaf drop - temperature and light. Too dark - it'll drop leaves - too cold - it'll drop leaves. In my case it's always the temps as the cause. I need to keep it at 15°C minimum - and only for up to 7 hours - for the rest of the time it's at 18°C. That works for me. And the line is very fine. One degree too cold and it'll drop leaves. But get the conditions right, and it grows like crazy! Good luck!

I have had one for 4-5 years now and it is easy to care for; like you say, it likes to dry out between waterings (easy for me to achieve!). Mine grows very large (3' across at its largest) but I like that. I have taken loads of cuttings over this time and they have always been popular when I have sold them on.

That a beauty Geoff! May have to try one! Right now I only have a "bolero" rex begonia. At least I think it's "bolero". Looks like it. Begonias are SO easy to start from leaf cuttings. Everyone should try it!

I was like the majority of Brits thinking they were just rather dull and common bedding plants. I had no idea the genus was so diverse.

tbh, i bought my 1st begonia gryphon after seeing yours, but it died. Recently found another large gryphon and its going well, some crispy leaves because I'm scared of overwatering. I must say that mine looks so different from yours so idk, local nurseries here have a tendency to mislabel plants, when they actually label them.

I just let mine go semi dormant inside for the winter. I will let a few leaves persist, but overall I just let it go. In the late winter I will move it in a warmer spot and start to water. I bring it out in the spring and it starts putting out leaves like crazy. I live in Minneapolis, MN.

Arrgh hit send too soon, I am using a small iPhone ( don’t have a computer) The thick canes on gryphon remind me of caudex plants , which are my favorites. I saw a mini begonia with a caudex in a Logee’s catalog, have you ever had one? I enjoy your videos 🌿😊🌱
@Grow_Up_Man55

So far the consensus seems to be they’re to protect the lead from the sun by offering some shade. Coming in a close second is that they increase the surface area of the leaf to improve photosynthesis in shady conditions. Take your pick! 😁

I had one identical to yours and accidentally let it completely dry out last winter. It lost every leave and I thought it was a goner. I cut one stem off, thinking propagation was an option. (That didn’t work at all, of course. I know now it needs at least one leaf to propagate.) I put the remaining plant in a sunny window, and judiciously watered it. Eventually it did come back, but it took quite awhile. To be fair, it looked

Came across your channel and subscribed. Love all your plants! I have my begonia gryphon under a grow light. It’s growing fast! The problem is that the bottom stems are not perked up. They’re not dead, just hanging and not standing like the others on the upper part. I have mine in LECA and a pot that has a water gauge so I don’t water it until the water is all the way down. She loves being in LECA. I just don’t know why the lower leaves with the long stems hang down instead of standing up. Any thoughts?
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 5 месяцев назад
Thanks Ruth. So if your setup involves the roots permanently sitting in water then perhaps that's not ideal for many Begonias which on the whole prefer to dry out between waterings. I've no issue with the LECA - but maybe just try it without the self-watering pot for a while and see if anything happens. There are no absolutes in plant care and this might not be the problem - but it's worth a try. Another issue with Gryphon is that it doesn't like lower temperatures for very long. Mine always looks its worse at this time of year as it's been at 12°C for at least 3 months.

I have one that is so top heavy it keeps falling over. I’ve tried to stabilize it with a stick inside the pot…. It’s just one stem, but all the leaves are growing at the top. Should it cut it back?
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 Год назад
I've pruned mine down many times...but...sometimes when not in optimal conditions Begonias can die if you prune them without leaving any leaves on at all. To offset this I prune it back - but not right down to the base. Leave the lowest leaf - wherever that is - in place and prune back to that. That should stimulate growth lower down but still allow it to photosynthesise. Then as new leaves appear lower down the stems you can prune again to however low you want it. Hope that helps and good luck!

I might get one of these, i seem to have a lot more luck with cane begonias over rex. I see you have a few rex begonias and i wonder if you have ever had an issue where the emerging leaves just drop off before they develop. If so, what was the cause, as i am having this issue with 3 rex begonia that i have. I am truly stumped and frustrated by it.
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 2 месяца назад
I’ve got a load of Rex begonias in the house too. And to be honest, no, I haven’t encountered that issue. For me, providing temperatures are right, they grow fine all by themselves. What’s your conditions for them?
@kittysparkleeyes
@kittysparkleeyes 2 месяца назад
@@Grow_Up_Man55 i keep them indoors, temps are currently ranging between 20-26 c as i have a loft extention room with two windows. I am not using artificial heating currently. Humidity is ranging between 45-70 with 50-60 being typical. I have a wide range of plants, aroids, calathea, maranta, alocasia , streptocarpus, african violets, philodendron and the begonia obviously (around 100 plants) i did have to treat two of my cane begonias for powdery mildew a few days ago, so i am comsidering if this could be an airflow issue (i have now opened both windows incase) or its maybe a watering issue. What is your watering schedule for rex begonia?
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 2 месяца назад
Nothing jumps out at me other than, as you say, perhaps airflow leading to new growth rotting off. I keep all of Begonias on the dry side, almost to the point of wilting, then give them a good drench.
@kittysparkleeyes
@kittysparkleeyes 2 месяца назад
@@Grow_Up_Man55 i think i might give your watering schedule a go then, i never let mine dry out so this could be a factor. They aren't sitting in a bog or anything like that, but too much watering could cause drop off i guess. I am tending towards being a more generous waterer, which is something i have had to curb with my avs
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 2 месяца назад
@kittysparkleeyes yes definitely! I think we’re all prone to watering too much on occasion. Begonias generally prefer to be dry in my experience, especially the rhizomatous types. Hope it works for you.
