Especially now, with lost interactions during their formative years, due to prevalence of social media and also from global quarantines and hidden faces due to widespread use of masks. I worry for the youth of today that they've missed some valuable time and opportunities to process social cues and that it will adversely affect them later. Being a teen or tween has never been easy but I honestly feel they've got it harder due to unprecedented external pressures.

Yeah...for one thing, that ish is rampant now...way more ppl have that than got covid. No Lie. Another thing is, I didn't know ANY of what I know now when I was late teens, early 20s & it would've saved me a lot of...turbulence...had I known a few red flags.

56:45 As a child who grew up in a volatile household, I naturally learned to read body language in order to protect myself. Watching for changes in facial expressions, a stiffening body, quick movements, tone of voice, etc gave me an advantage. Although I didn't realize it at the time, this has given me the opportunity to pick up on situations that are unsafe much quicker than others. Mark has an interesting take on this, though. I will be paying more attention to that from now on. Fascinating! I might add that I do have a strong women's intuition. I once drove with my boyfriend to drop off the rent check at the property managers home. Before we even pulled in the driveway I had a very strong feeling that something was not right. I refused to get out of the car. A few months later the homeowner visited us personally to find out why we weren't paying the rent (we were). The property manager turned out to be a con who was ripping off the homeowner. I am certain their was much more this man was in too but was never able to learn anymore. This is only one example. (I never met or saw him and the house he lived in looked clean and quite normal) The feeling I get can only be described as an incredibly strong full body warning) I've only experienced that strong feeling 2 other times. Although I have mini ones periodically and I have learned to always trust them.

Mark's style is a little cheeky, which complements all of the other coursework(s) you're doing. I listen to more audiobooks these days due to my primary reading is textbooks. The audiobooks I choose in lieu of podcasts (or songs I've heard a bagillion times) when driving or doing simplistic tasks.

Some women who grows up in violent and unpredictable environments can develop a well functioning danger detection. Not because it's a gift, but due to a lot of training. And some women are drawn to violent men like moths to candles. So what you get out of what life offers you, is not a given. I think... There! I agree with all three of you 😄

Hi there everyone! Great podcast, with very interesting topics and I’d like to share my experience of growing up with a grandiose narcissistic sociopath mother. I was adopted by her and her husband, both of them are medical doctors, my father is the ultimate narcissistic supply for my mom. I was physically, emotionally and mentally abused throughout my childhood (attempted my first suicide at the age of 15), and financially when I was a teenager and a young adult. So we could say it was a pretty volatile environment. I was always threatened to be discarded, given back to orphanage, or when I was older they threatened me to disown me if I don’t obey them. I can read the room pretty well. What I can’t do is judge the intentions of people around me. I’m super naive and easily manipulated because I’m so in need of attention and good words that I trust anyone who is kind to me. At least in the past. Two years ago my whole life was destroyed by a psychopathic predator from the internet: my husband left me due to the manipulations of that individual (I would not even call them a “person”), and they abused me mentally to the point where I tried to take my life one last time. As you can see, I’m still here, survived the unsurvivable, gained some permenant nervous damages, but still breathing. Eversince that I have studied narcissism, psychopathy, have been through therapy, have created my own facebook group for survivors of narcissistic abuse, and have managed to heal myself enough to be able to help others. So what my point is, that because of not knowing any other types of behaviour other than narcissistic abuse, being all gaslighted and guilt tripped, I did not recognise deceptive behaviour. Only after getting more into behaviour analysis did I learn to read the room(s) better. Adding my now extensive knowledge of cluster b personality disorders to that, I recognise deception much easier and more surely than ever. THIS is the superpower I gained by watching the The Behavioural Panel, Spidey, HG Tudor, PsychopathExposure, Cinema Therapy, and so on. And for that, I will be forever grateful! ❤

I am one of those people who is always second guessing myself on what I think of other people. At work when I train someone, and I'm asked if I think the person will work out or fit in... I can only give concrete answers. I'm always afraid I'm wrong or that my barometer, so to speak, is different than theirs is.

I really appreciate what both you and Scott said about people who grew up in volatile homes. The descriptions are my experience as well. I normally love hearing Mark speak, he’s brilliant, but was a bit disappointed that he didn’t seem to take Scotts career long expertise into account and be more open minded after both you and Scott shared your experiences. You guys nailed it and I hope Mark absorbs your point of views and experiences over time

Agree on your point. As someone who loves the Behaviour panel and Comedy, Mark is one of my favourite people. I felt his whole day was about disagreeing. Me, volatile home growing up and can read a room like no one’s business. I totally agreed with Scott and Eric with this as I am the result and share this experience. Disappointed in Mark a little today and especially on this topic. 🌸🌺 oh well, he may have come from a non volatile home and thinks he can read a room too. That’s his experience.

I agree...3 or 4 times I almost came on to write a similar comment... But held back ( until they started talking about reading the comments) I was surprised immensely at Mark...but...the first 10 minutes or so he was himself...then, he linked out as time went om...but he Did say he was in pain from the dentist earlier this day they taped this....and by the end of this program..right before they started to talk comedians....he looked very much as though he had a blaring headache. I love Mark, he is my favourite, I think...so I'm definitely going to give him a pass, and hope he feels better soon!!

Yes. What Influenced the "antenna". Behavior/actions Inappropriate or appropriate of those trusted. And how we felt about that bent our antenna in a certain direction. What gets fed gets magnified. Being heightened aware of negative behavior have also conditioned the antenna to bend a certain way.

I think the recognising of volatile people, is what fight, flight freeze friend reaction predominantly comes into play , and was disassociation a default mechanism, people who do qill shut down. They can't get intuned.

Definitely along the line of what Mark is saying, just because you may be picking up if someone is not so nice doesn't make you great at all body language, ie: queues for about to rob a bank or shop lift, getting ready to run, lying, truthfulness.....or they would all be the best body language readers & none of those people from sad homes would be messed up...thankfully you figured it out and chose to do better....& succeed

Scott’s women’s intuition is real , over share here but I am a survivor of SAbuse from my birth male and his friends . I also fell victim to my step father’s alcoholism. His anger was always aimed at me. I lived on egg shells from about age 4? I was abused from about age 1 . I escaped at age 15 .. I am very aware of my surroundings at all times . At cafes I sit by the door so I can see everything and have a quick escape. My shower curtain is see through… I know a ‘sly guy’ when I see one! Also wicked women .

1:05:00 While I understand Mark's hesitation to make general rules, what Scott said I think it's reasonable to say without seeing a case by case. If you are forced to be aware of people's moods your entire life for survival, you will be more aware of it in the future. Then seconds later, Mark says you can't turn off your instinct. Would that be instinct from experience or are you just born with it? I feel it's a fair general rule to have.

1:05:00 Sorry Scott - while I appreciate the compliment you often give us women - I have to agree with Mark, in this case. Having grown up in a volatile home, my antenna may be extra sensitive, but it’s attached to a biased processor. So maybe a person can pick up on more subtle signals, but a collaborative or less biased assessment should be paired with it, for best accuracy.

I have to disagree, Scott. Not all women are intuitive. Just read the comments under all true crime videos, where there’s so many gullible women defending the psychopathic criminal. The Chris Watts case is the perfect example. Look at all the women who actually believe he’s innocent and that Shanann (not Chris) was the one who unalived her babies. It’s ridiculous.
