Behaviour management is tricky when you are a new teacher. You have a brand new class of children who have different personalities and learning styles. For an NQT in particular, it might take a long time before you have clear behaviour management strategies in place for your class. We have tried many different methods for challenging or difficult behaviour in the past, and in this video we share with teachers our experiences and top tips that we have gathered. Consider sharing this with any primary school NQTs who are starting their teaching journey this year. Hopefully it will give them some ideas of behaviour management strategies that will work effectively in their classrooms.

I was teaching adults, Access Level 3. I was given the role of a course leader: before I had any training or experience in a classroom I began teaching. I also had to set and mark assignments before I was trained how to. I have lost my job due to not meeting targets; I have been allowed to stay on the course but I have to finish coursework for the last year. The intensity of my workload, and the fact that I am a single parent meant I had no time to work towards my QTS. I had to relearn everything before I taught it. I am just looking for a new placement and getting lots of coursework done. Thank you, yes your video was very useful. :)

In my work experience, the teacher had a “rainbow, sun, cloud, rain” chart with each child’s face on it, starting on the sun each week. When the child did something good or bad, the teacher made the child move themselves up or down. That way they had to consciously move their own picture to acknowledge what they’d done. I think it’s a great idea to make the child do to this, rather than the teacher and it makes them more responsible for their actions. The same for a positive thing, they got to proudly move themselves up to the rainbow!🌈

Thank you for sharing this. I definitely think this is a great way to manage behaviour, especially with little ones! Perhaps we could do a KS1 and KS2 specific video series in the future. Thanks again!

For Teachers yeah! That’s a great idea because this, which I failed to mention, was used in a reception class!

I used this. It's a fantastic behaviour management technique. Be consistent and clear from the beginning with what happens when they go onto the raincloud, lightening, rainbow, etc. So that they k ow from the beginning.

1) do set high expectations from the start and see it through. They like routine and want to see things through the end. 2) do smile before Christmas. Always make sure you will not scare kids into submission. 3) praise in public and reprimand in private. Try not scream and shout in front of the class. Try not to make a song and dance about it. Come and see me at my table and ask them to tell you what they have done. Control the situation by using your smooth calm voice. What is wrong today? 4) do always make student reflect on mistake and how I can handle it in the right way. Do praise and acknowledge students as much as possible and what you do not want to do is compare two students. Stick to the ethos that every kind is beautiful and unique in their own way. If you give a consequence, you must stick it through the end. 5) be proud and share success with all parents and families. Star of the week to improvement etc. notice the little things and break things up. 6) don’t let behaviour management be the only thing you are thinking about. Really at the end of the day is on them. Take time to clear your mind on that. Don’t go home and let it be a burden to You all the time.

I’ll see what we can do. It’s so tricky because we don’t want to show children in the videos! But I’m sure there is a clever camera angle that would work 😅thank you for the support x

Hi, great video as usual. I will be starting my NQT year in September and it will be my first year of teaching. I think a great video would be how to set up your classroom as that is what we are most likely to be occupied with before it all begins.

We have started recording some classroom setup videos actually! It’s taking a while to catch up as we have some summer content still to share but we will try to get it up as soon as possible. We have so much we want to film but also so busy. But keep your eyes out! And thank you for always supporting us. I know you’ll have an amazing NQT year (busy, crazy but also enjoyable!) x

Hello! I always find your videos really helpful! I would love to see more videos about tips for trainee teachers/ primary education university students. e.g. placement tips. How did you introduce yourself to the children when teaching on placements? How did you take on the 'teacher' role when on placement when you are a student who is still training? Any tips at all that you have for trainee teachers would be much appreciated! Thank you for all of your videos, I love watching them!

Thank you so much for these ideas. I’ve made notes of all of this for future video content. We are having a big bulk recording day soon so we can definitely work with this! We truly appreciate the support and will continue to make as many videos as we are able☺️

Do you have any tips on getting work/volunteering experience within schools etc? I've just graduated uni last year and am looking into the PDGE route into primary teaching but the volunteering/experience seems difficult to find when I'm working full time at the moment. I feel like I've made the wrong choice and I should have applied to Primary Education courses way back when I left school because it seems inaccessible now :(

I remember struggling trying to find them off for work experience. I would suggest rather than blocking it into two weeks see if you are able to take one day each week, or even one morning. Ask your work place if they would allow this as it means a lot to you professionally. Consider working somewhere with children (education centre, play centre) while also gathering school experience. I know it’s so tricky but keep pushing for it - I remember having to convince my old boss while I was working a few jobs! Let us know how you get on! Good luck.

Haha this is some fairly tale advise for teachers 😂. I just finished my PGCE and went to mainstream school in 🇬🇧 London. This ryan and softy girl would not last a day in my secondary school. 😂 🤷‍♂️

Hi! Softy girl here. I worked in city Centre Manchester and completed all of my restrain training - needed it for breaking up fights and catching tables as they were thrown down corridors. Don’t be so quick to judge people. We all have our own experiences. I’m just sharing ideas to help others - consider using your platform to do the same. Thanks!
