Attended the culmination ceremony of Behdieñkhlam, our annual state festival, at Jowai, alongside the Hon'ble Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, who also served as the chief guest for the event. Also present were, Jowai MLA, Wailadmiki Shylla; Sutnga Saipung MLA, Santa Mary Shylla; South Shillong MLA, Sanbor Shullai; officials from the government and district administration, amongst others.
Behdieñkhlam is celebrated as a heartful prayer to rid off plagues and evil, invoking God's blessings for a bountiful harvest. It was particularly delightful to watch my young friends dance to the beats of the bom with enthusiasm, their faces shining with excitement as they culminated at Aitnar, or the holy pond. The vibrant colours on display added depth and richness to the festivities and the passion with which the people celebrated the rich cultural traditions filled my heart with joy. The colourful rots (raths) were particularly eye-catching, conveying strong messages on them, serving us a reminder that Behdieñkhlam is also about driving away the social evils prevalent in the society.
Yesterday was a true celebration of the human spirit and I feel grateful to have been part of this rich cultural experience.
