I used to think Ridley was a total over-confident cocky jackass with the way he conducted interviews... But as I grew into adulthood,I realized that this man may be the best Hollywood director interview there is because of his bluntness and honesty. He knows he's talented, he knows he made good stuff and he doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks. He's an absolute delight to watch.
I'm glad you came to your senses. Being confident and know you do well at something is a good sign, not bad. But there is apart of society that look down upon people like that. Mostly outside the United States where they have more of a socialist view of things.

Sir Ridley is at heart a bloody good author which is one reason his films are so damn terrific. We are both now octogenarians, so I still have hope that he’ll find one of my screenplays doable.

Im always amazed at how people don't pick up on his humor. In some Alien Covenant interviews he's sitting next to Fassbender and whenever he makes a joke Fassbenser seems confused on whether he should laugh or not.
Hilariously ironic that one of the world's greatest directors is holding the mic way too close to his mouth causing the sound to distort. Even geniuses make mistakes. But a brilliant interview and Sir R is a great raconteur. What an amazing talent.
I really liked Prometheus and all the knowledge behind it, but I think it was bad idea to omit or shorten some scenes from the movie. After watching the fan made directors cut It all made more sense and had more space to develop.
I love Ridley's approach to filmmaking. Particularly because he storyboards his films. So important. Many great directors do. Hayao Miyazaki is another who boards his films.

I realize that I am late to the game, but when Ridley is talking about his early years, he refers to borrowing some bullocks. I can find any other references that to ones "balls", or bull balls. I feel quite sure that he was referring to something else connected to filmmaking. Can someone tell me what that definition is?
It was an interesting editing choice to end it on that, instead of the usual interview endings of "well thanks for talking to us, good luck with..." yada yada. But that ending made me think that's how real life feels, one minute a person is there the next without warning they could be gone. Maybe the editor has a dramatic flare?

could have used a mic stand, clip, etc.... but that would have made it uncomfortable for Scott and everyone listening. Microphones are still new, it will take time to understand the technology.
drop the mic down ridley for god's sake i can barely make out the words you are saying (ironic)microphones have a polar pattern with dropout zones for sensitivity and he is speaking right into the edge of the void of the dead zone for the mic being able to pick up his voice
James Cameron just makes great sequels. Aliens, T2. Basically, that's it. Anything else, is just overlong, or boring. Purely meaning Avatar and TItanic.
Cobalt Falcon T2 is overly long, and has parts that don't work that well. As far as film making goes, T1 and Aliens remain Cameron's best & most consistent works.
How sad that he doesn't mention that the core of the creative team behind Alien(Dan O Bannon, Moebius, Chris Foss, and Giger) was taken directly from Horodowski's Dune.
The sound mand should be SHOT! Give him a crappy mic that allows plosives.......Sound screws up more productions than any other thing.....editing a close second.
Nothing wrong with the mic. That's a Shure SM-58, the workhorse of live sound events. Indestructible, dependable, clear and clean and the industry standard. There IS something wrong with the way that Ridley is holding it, however. Which is shocking, to me, at least. You would think that Ridley Scott, who is a technological whiz, would know better than that. Apparently not.

I wonder if Scott was on amphetamines when he was doing Alien. It would make sense, because it does have a sort of dreamlike - or druglike - quality. Not in the psychedelic sense, but in the sense of its stark, realistic vibe.
Liked Ridley until he talked shit about a camera operator who was standing right next to him in the Prometheus making of doc. Lost all respect. The dude is seriously high and mighty and not humble.

They should have allowed somebody else to do the new Alien-franchise-films, which then became "Prometheus" and "Alien-Covenant", because they turned out to be a mess in his hands. They should have given up on the idea to connect the earlier films to the newer ones. They should have been bold enough to try something new. Ok, these are sci-fi-films, nobody expects them to be scientifically accurate, but man...astronauts going to an alien planet taking off their helmets in Prometheus, playing around with completely unknown lifeforms, having no monitoring procedures on the spaceship to determine if they are free of alien contamination, etc. And in Covenant they don't even wear protective suits anymore, because why should they...they are just the best astronauts and complete professionals, but somehow forgot about it. What a bunch of crap. Visually they are very well made, otherwise a pile of garbage. A complete waste of money and talent. And I don't care about the directors cut. I went to the cinema to watch the film and expect something remotely coherent and qualitative. I don't understand why he is doing films if he doesn't have the right to cut the version which goes to the cinemas his way. It doesn't make any sense.
anyone else getting a laugh seeing Ridley Scott holding a really poor mic ? its a funny contrast to the technology at his fingertips when doing a movie. like seeing james caermon giving an interview while wearing 1950s 3d specs for 40 minutes. both are inspirational directors. ridleys my favourite easily. and to be fair on the audio recording, ridleys mic technique is shocking haha, but thats why you don't hand out mics that require the user to be informed about microphone polar patterns. thanks for sharing.
That's not his own hand....! It's well known within the industry that a red headed, fair skinned old midget who was a great friend of his father usually works with Scott on every project, easy money really....Scott likes to support him and his family with simple jobs such as holding his mic for him...Always a steady, firm hand, never complains, never answers back, always keeps just out of frame....A real pro. The last of the great midgets really....when he goes, this type of work will be studied and missed greatly....Excellent...!!
his process is just to have total control, spend money and be arrogant. Studios use him because hes commanding on set and not afraid to piss money away on talent and sets because hes so oldschool and old. But As soon as the filming is done the suits just do whatever they want. Hes just a drill sergeant who keeps people in line so the movie gets made. And hes a lush. Studios like him because hes confident. He's not special. Hes drunk in this interview and he brings up David Fincher only because he knows that hes know for doing a bad Alien movie and he wants to ingratiate himself.

What a boring, pompous interviewer. Not engaging ( or at least pretending to) with Scott in anyway. Just rattles of questions no flow. Thankfully Scott as always is a funny,absorbing interview.
Prometheus is complete shit of a movie. I don't understand how the same guy who made Alien could make such an abomination as Prometheus and second one shit of a movie, i don't even remember the name of the last one. It's so bad that even Alien vs Predator looks decent against them.
