Behind One of Jim Henson's Most Classic Sketches

After visiting the "Business Business" puppets mid-build at Jim Henson's Creature Shop in New York ( • Puppet-Making at Jim H... ), Adam Savage had the opportunity to watch them LIVE at the Puppet Up improv show in LA. It's a particularly challenging sketch, requiring multiple puppeteers performing with complex puppets that must match the original audio recorded by Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl in the 1960s, plus pull off some special effects as well. Puppeteer John Tartaglia and puppet wrangler Kathryn Malloy walk Adam through the "silent dance" that is one of Jim Henson's most classic pieces.

John played Ernie for a while in the 2000s. That's where I know him from. Also he was Princeton and Rod in Avenue Q, and Pinocchio and Magic Mirror in Shrek the Musical.

Love it, I was a student at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh graduate 1992. I met a puppeteer by the name of Jim in the Industrial Design Program. His knowledge and sharing I will never forget. Thank you for the memory reactivation.

Just saw Puppet Up Uncensored last night the Jim Henson Studios in LA. Always been a huge Henson fan. Front row seats and easily in the top 3 live events I have experienced. One of the funniest shows I have ever seen too. Always wanted an adult no holding back type puppet show. Thanks Adam Savage and Tested for these Henson videos. Would have never known about Puppet Up Uncensored without this series. I am looking forward to seeing the show again in the future

I can imagine that these old sketches also was some inspiration for the 'later' Muppet show material. I mean, when the first notes from 'Business business' where played, my brain went like: "Hey, that's Mahna Mahna", and the love puppets look a bit like the "Da-doo-da-do-do" puppets...

I think people younger than a certain age will not find the "slot machine eyes" or the associated sound effects to be meaningful. Just your mentioning of it as "slot machine" instead of the proper "adding machine / cash register" is itself telling. I'm sure to the original audience, this immediately brought to mind the sound and sight of ringing up groceries.

They are the working ants, while the grasshoppers play their violins. And then at the end, we meet the new boss. Same as the old boss. And the grasshoppers take over by force.

He toured the Jim Henson studio a while back and made a bunch of videos. I enjoy the engineering of puppetry but you don't have to. If you don't like it then don't watch; he has plenty of other content.
