I will never forget playing the Dreamcast for the first time. I think it was one of the biggest generational leaps in gaming history.
@virtuaconker85
@virtuaconker85 5 лет назад
Matty Lanciana - I believe that the biggest generational leap was from the snes/Sega Mega Drive to the PlayStation/n64 basically going from 2D sprite base games to full 3D games but this was the next big step and it’s just been small step ups since then.
@Chemical_Ali
@Chemical_Ali 4 года назад
@@virtuaconker85 I would disagree. The Genesis and SNES were already dipping their toes into fully 3D games with Virtua Racing and Starfox. And in between the launches of the Genesis/SNES and the Saturn/PSX/N64, there were already systems that were pretty competent at handling basic 3D (Atari Jaguar/3DO; you could even include the 1991 SEGA CD that handled pseudo 3D scaler effects and forms a bridge between the 2D and 3D consoles ). So the "big jump" to the next gen Saturn/PSX/N64 was not really such a big leap. The same cant be said for the jump from the very rudimentary 3D graphics of the Saturn/PSX/N64 to the detailed 3D graphics of the Dreamcast (the point where 3D graphics finally looked as presentable as its 2D counterparts).
@virtuaconker85
@virtuaconker85 4 года назад
@@Chemical_Ali - The Genesis/Megadrive and SNES was dipping their toes into 3D but it was very limited, with true next gen 3D comes with it a hole new way to design games that wasnt around with the 4th gen consoles (mostly rail shooters or racers). It was during this time that we got games like Mario 64 that set the standard for how to navigate a 3D space( before this no one had done it nor knew how to ) and gave us the analog sticks, another game is Zelda OoT that gave us Z targeting and the PlayStation gave us the move from cartridge to CDs bringing better sound, full motion videos and greater storage. You say that in-between the Genesis/SNES and the Saturn/PSX/N64 was the Atari Jaguar and 3DO but the thing is these consoles were apart of the next generation and are apart of the 5th generation same as the N64 and PlayStation, so this in it self backs up what I said as I was kinda referring to the 5th generation in general. The Dreamcast just built on top of the previous generation with similar game design and only brought higher polygon count and higher pixel counts, yes there was improvements in other areas but really it was more of the same just like when we went from the PS2 to the PS3 and PS4 where all we are getting is more polygons, better lighting, higher resolutions but they are just more of the same formula that started during the first 3D generation with the N64 and PlayStation. Just look at Mario 64 and Mario Odyssey where yes there is better graphics and its a bigger game next to Mario 64 BUT the underlying core of it is still very much the same. I will agree that the Dreamcast was amazing at the time and I still love it to this day but I grew up with the Atari 7800 and then moved to the Sega Megadrive/Genesis and I will never forget the wonder and amazement I felt when I first played Mario 64 and Goldeneye 64 as I hadnt seen anything like it, it wasnt just the fact it was 3D or had better sound but it was the new game design, the new way controls were handled with analog sticks. Along with that is the introduction of controller rumble and being able to save either on the cartridge (yes some games prior had saving but not all) or with a memory card, it was also the first time we got 4 player split screen to give an amazing multiplayer experience. We also witnessed the birth of a lot of franchises during this era of gaming that are still going to this day like super smash brothers, Gran Turismo, Tomb Raider and Resident Evil just to name a few. I believe that during the 6th generation that started with the Dreamcast was the first to start and refine the 3D gaming and in someways start to perfect it but for me it wasnt as big of a generational leap or as groundbreaking as it was from the 4th gen to the 5th and didnt leave me with the feeling of "wow this is all very new and exiting" and was more like "cool this is looking a lot better than before" and really that is how its been going forward in each new generation, it didnt really bring a lot new to the table that the 5th gen did, it just built on top of it and made it better. This is why I dont think the Dreamcast is the biggest generational leap in gaming and why I think the 5th generation with the PlayStation and N64 was the biggest leap and Im still waiting for the next big generational leap and I dont know but maybe VR could be it with the upcoming PS5 and Xbox.

Compare your average SNES or Genesis game to something like metal gear solid. The difference is unbelievable. I'd say the most important leaps were 3rd generation, 5th, and then lesser extent 6th. Dreamcast was an impressive jump but nothing like the jump from 2nd to 3rd or 4th to 5. If Dreamcast really was so amazing it wouldn't have been such a failure. I had one, it was nice, but no awe experiences like me or anyone I knew like with nes, ps1, or n64

As someone in his nearly 40s I was able to grow up with Atari, NES, SNES, Genesis, PS1, N64, Dreamcast, PS2 and Xbox. And yes, Dreamcast is such a sad story to hear knowing how good of a system it was. I still have a very special place for it in my life. In fact, I can say that nowadays is difficult to explain just how BIG a leap it was when compared to PS1 or N64. The jump in graphics is something that I haven't experienced since then (maybe from PS2 to Xbox 360's Gears of War). Just the fact that developers still had this vision to experiment with weird games instead of building by the numbers blockbusters is something that still resonates as we enter more into this trend with each passing year (Illbleed, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Seaman).
@samuraigundam0079
@samuraigundam0079 5 лет назад
Moravia90s This is true for me too. When I got the Dreamcast and started up Soulcaliber, it felt like such a shockingly huge leap, I expected any console that came after would surely be an equally incredible leap forward. If the characters in Shenmue looked close to real life people, surely the next gen system would have photo realistic models almost indistinguishable from the real thing. We’re at PS4 now, and I’m still waiting. No other system has made the leap that far from what came before it. And as you said, the creativity of those PS1 and Dreamcast days are almost gone. The Japanese market still takes some risks, but nothing like they used to, because they can’t afford it, or at least can’t afford to bring niche games here, in the face of the Call of Duty’s and whatever bland FPS makes a million dollars over here.

I'm only in my 20s but I grew up with n64, ps2, and ps3. It was so intriguing to see the advancement of graphics, what a great time for technology. Obviously we have way more powerful PCs now but the late 90s-mid 2000s was a special time to witness 3d games transform from weird 64-bit hamfisted polygons to the graphics we know and love today.

And it was also compatible with ps1 , so with the ps2 consumers will get 3 things for the price of 1. But still it was just soo unfair how sony brutally nailed sega for the second time,fuck sony!!!

John, Sony did exactly what anyone else would have done, release another console and market it. They didn't "nail Sega". Sega nailed themselves. The Dreamcast failed because of nearly a decade of Sega's own utter failures. The Dreamcast arrived on the bodies of 4...FOUR preciously failed Sega consoles. All within the meager span of 6+yrs. Sega-CD, 32X, Saturn, Nomad (GG wasn't a failure but wasn't great either). All because of consecutive piss poor decisions from Japanese and American management. Then they throw the DC out of door claiming "this is it this time everyone!" It was only natural for their credibility to be in shambles by the Dreamcast's release.
@johneygd
@johneygd 5 лет назад
Retro Soul well yeah HOWEVER, i do count the 32X & sega cd NOT as a console but do count them as addons but i do have to admit that they were expensive flops, The gamegear & sega nomads were handhelds and eventrough the gamegear only sold 1/10th & the nomad onld only sold 1/100th compated to the old gameboy DMG,but the reason for that was pretty obvious, those handhelds were just too expensive to manufactor. And oddly enough the nomad was only released in the US(why sega) But we can agree that the saturn,dreamcast,sega1000 & sega2000 did flopped(hence their rarity, not mentioned the sega master system did sold NOT better then the wii u,but still sega tryed what they could do and the systems did atleast sold waaay better then the virtual boy. And regardless of sony, back then they were responsible for producing chips for both nintendo & sega for their games & consoles so both company’s could not do it on their own but sony just could live without them!!!

Mark Walker Dreamcast was released in 98 that’s 2 years after the n64(hence why it was way ahead of its time, the concept you may have missed), when this thing was on gamemasters magazines the comparison was literally night and day. this was just when PC and Console graphics were starting to converge, so not only were PC graphics starting to catch up to console they were no where near as affordable. Also some games on DC looked better than they did on PC and that was simply down to optimisation.
@alexandernorman5337
@alexandernorman5337 Год назад
@ProudOfYourRoots PCs of that time couldn't compete with the Dreamcast at transforming and lighting vertices. The SH-4 processor was a beast made with 3d graphics in mind. Even the SSE or 3Dnow equipped processors from 99-00 weren't as optimized for vertex processing. If you wanted to do a sum of squares calculation or a dot product, then you needed to execute a whole block of code on Intel and AMD processors. With the SH-4, you only needed to execute one instruction (everything was done in hardware) and it needed only a single execution cycle. Much, much faster on a per cycle basis, and your code is considerably more compact and so you stretch fast cache RAM.

Okay, for a hardware video the info was pretty lackluster. For those who are interested in some more in-depth features of the Dreamcast, please read: Let me add a couple of things about the hardware and what made the Dreamcast so special. First off, the SGXs unique "tile based deferred rasterization" is really worth talking about. What the GPU did was to create a grid of boxes, rendering each box individually during the rasterization process. The rasterization began closest to the screen, and if 3D-objects within a box obstructed what came behind it, the Dreamcast never calculated the specific vector,- texturing and lightning information behind it (since it was completely unnecessary). this massively increasing triangle performance and fill rate. Another thing worth mentioning was the Dreamcast texture compression feature that could compress 16-color palettized textures in a 1:32 ratio. Something we have never seen in hardware since then. With smart artistry and technical knowledge of this feature, you could potentially cram 64MB of "PC textures" into the 8MB of video memory of the Dreamcast. With this being said. The Dreamcast had so much more to offer than what the hardware specs give it credit for.... just the fact that it also had hardware support for normal maps. (The thing that makes Doom3 monsters/environments look detailed. the normal map contains light data and during the rasterization it will render light bouncing off the texture according to the lights position, massively increasing perceived polygonal quality of 3D objects), a technique that is still commonly used in modern games. The DC died waaay too early, and I definitely think that we would've seen some awesome games for it if it lasted longer... Just to think of a couple of candidates: Ninja Gaiden, DOA3, Outrun2006, Panzer Dragon Ortha. JSFR Future etc. If I had more time I would actually start developing games for the machine, since the hardware is so fascinating. :)

This. Every single other spec for the PS2 was rather pathetic in comparison to everything else it competed with, hell, the GCN was a laser rifle compared to the PS2's water pistol. The OG xbox was literally a budget PC for 2001, and it kicked the shit out of the PS2 performance wise.

6:24 One really good example of VMU being utilized is Sonic Shuffle. For those who don't know, Sonic Shuffle is a Mario Party-like game which uses cards instead of dices. Basically, a deck of 28 cards is shuffled and dealt to 4 players, who then can use those to move specified number of spaces. The thing is, there's no limit on using only your own cards. You can use your opponent's cards, which is super useful if you could calculate who has what cards (for example, if 2 ones are in the trash can and other 2 are in your hand - this means no other player has ones, so it may be beneficial for you to try and snatch other player's cards) Where VMUs come into play, all players' hands are actually hidden ingame. However on VMUs they are visible, as if they are actual cards in your actual hand. This is a really neat feature made possible solely by the inclusion of VMUs

I remember being so excited to play Sonic Adventure that I rented a Japanese Dreamcast from Blockbuster a few months before it came out. The games looked SO GOOD and Sonic ran SO FAST. I played the heck out of my own Dreamcast when 9/9/1999 rolled around, going down to the local gamestop to collect my preorder. I loved Sonic Adventure 1/2, Ecco the Dolphin, Toy Commander, and all the fighting games, me and my friends played them a lot! We loved Soul Caliber, Powerstone 2, Rival Schools Project Justice, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and some other more weird ones like Psychic Force 2012, Plasma Sword, and Virtual On. Not to mention it gave me my first DDR at home experience with an import disc of 2nd mix before it came out on PS2 in the states. Such good times. Still have my original Dreamcast as well as a backup as my old one was used so much it has trouble with some discs now. I was sad to see Dreamcast be the underdog and always vouched for it. R.I.P. It had such a hopeful image. It looked like the future itself, and it always will. As though it was the USS Enterprise made into a console. It seemed to represent what 3D gaming could be with ever strengthening hardware (as it was the first machine to succeed a prior polygon-based console) and incredibly diverse titles, and for its part, it set the stage for the generation, even if it was to be the SEGA console without a successor. And it truly was one of the best generations in gaming. SEGA was a part of that! I must admit I never got into it in a timely manner (it was a rarity for me to do so with anything in those days), but those times were some of my favourite in gaming, whether it was Sonic Adventure or Grandia II or JSR or JJBA I was into at the moment. SEGA has absolutely not been the same since, and it's not hard to see why. They are way too scattered and had lost so much talent.

The CLX2 was actually more powerful than the Voodoo2. A lot more. The CLX2 triangle setup engine could rasterize over twice as many polygons as the V2. Additionally, CLX2 enabled 1024x1024 textures, texture compression, order independent transparency (no need for the CPU to sort transparent polygons), 32 bit color output, and it only renders pixels & texels that are actually visible. The only technical advantage the V2 had was that it could (in theory) perform 80% more texel operations because of its second texture mapping unit. But, unlike the CLX2, the V2 performs a lot of overdraw (rendering pixels and texels which are not visible) and so it couldn't actually show any appreciable visible gain here either. It should also be mentioned that the CLX2 was a stand alone, combined 3d/2d graphics accelerator. The V2 was 3d only, and so a 3dfx based Dreamcast would have needed another graphics chip (and dedicated memory) for 2d processing. 3dfx did piss Sega off, but Sega was going to go with PowerVR anyways. PowerVR made a larger technological leap between their first and second generation graphics accelerators than 3dfx did.

Finally some proof of what I've thought all along, why I bought Dreamcast on day one with a reserved boxed unit, why I skipped the PS2 and still find Dreamcast games to look better especially considering release time and how long it took PS2 developers to make pretty games on it. Apparently, as I suspected it was technically superior graphically in several aspects.

Actually, under the hood the anti piracy system is pretty clever, the mistake was that they tried to make an interactive media (Mil-CD, intended to give functionality such as karaoke and video on music CDs) using the same code that a game can run, but I think it is irrelevant to mention piracy because it wasnt a reason to fail. Sony was always massive at marketing campaigns (especially with bullshit presentations comparing the PS2 graphics to Toy Story), the huge value that DVD playback granted at the time (and somewhat now, people still complain how Switch doesnt have media capabilities even though we have a ton of devices that can playback multimedia content, unlike on 2000 which DVD players were expensive and VHS was trash, so the PS2 having it was a huge deal) and retrocompatibility added to the factor that SEGA's image was kinda burned by many reasons, both on consumer and developer side and I think Shenmue kinda helped to sink the company faster because how expensive the game was to make. I love this game, but it was delayed time and time again, moved from Saturn to the Dreamcast and it was one of the most expensive games to produce on the generation (as far as I remember only GTA San Andreas or GTA IV passed it in development costs), they needed to cancel the game earlier and focus on more cheaper productions.

I've constantly said that this system was totally ahead of it's time, it's just a shame SEGA was already in trouble when this launched. I still own my original system I got for 12/25/99. I think they could have done better if they had got the system out in NA region about a year earlier. I think it could have got a strong foothold, regardless of the PS2. I have so many fond memories of the system. I remember first going online with 4x4 EVO, and that offered cross-play with PC/MAC, which was really cool for the time. I believe i probably spent most of my time on PSO, and Unreal Tournament, though.

No, piracy was irrelevant, as it ramped up in 2001 after the console was already discontinued. Not many people had a CD burner or DSL in 1999 or 2000. Dreamcast was discontinued due to underperformance of installed base - number of consoles shipped and in use, consoles you might be able to sell software for - and while piracy would have likely hurt the number of software sales in the long run, it would have actually improved the installed base metric that the discontinuation decision was made upon.

The problem was, due the Sega's choices between 1992-1995 that effectively numbered their days as a hardware manufacturer, they had virtually NO margin for error with the Dreamcast as Sega was near enough on its knees financially circa 1998....they were banking on the Dreamcast to save them and by the time PS2 came onto the scene it was all over for Sega.....hence why it will always be a mystery as to why they didn't "evolve" their thinking/strategy with what made the Genesis so popular as it was...yet when it came to the Saturn they acted like a bunch of amateurs worried about what Atari were doing when the REAL threat was Sony...this from a company that was working with the big-a-listers in the industry on the arcade scene at the time...aka. I feel like SEGA at each turn either didn't know what they were doing, or the victim of forces beyond their control. At no point did they have a console that wasn't failing in some part of the world. I only really wonder about Mega Drive though, if the PC Engine's success had a lot to do with why it never really caught on in Japan. If it wasn't there, MD might have been the big success that generation and Saturn would be an even bigger success than it really was at home and elsewhere too, and its entire history could be different.

Sega should have bumped the price of the Dreamcast up to $250, and made the modem an insertable add-on (exactly like how the Gamecube's modem was insertable to be flush with the system). This would have given Sega roughly an additional $75 to put towards improving the graphical hardware of the Dreamcast. That would have amounted to a dramatic improvement, and likely made Model 3 arcade ports super easy and quick. As it was, the Dreamcast struggled to do Model 3 ports and it took a skilled developer a while to port a Model 3 game to be near arcade perfect. Ultimately, as good as the Dreamcast looked initially, any fast-moving game with lots of calculations like Power Stone looked blocky and basic. Looking back through my gaming magazines of the time, the sentiment was that the Dreamcast looked good, but wasn't a true generational leap. A $250 Dreamcast without a modem likely could have been stronger than the PS2, due to Sony engineering that system so badly and having to include a costly DVD player.

todesziege, not necessarily, arguably one of the reasons the PS2 had a high adoption rate (aside from coming out a year before it's main competitors) was that it was a DVD player, It certainly was my DVD player for a long time. Consumers tend to excuse an extra cost if the hardware is doing something extra (ie more bang for my buck). It is the reason many swallowed the PS3s launch price, while it was expensive for a console, it was also a well priced top of the line Bluray player. Even without Sega's history attached, if you saw one console in the store that just played games, while the one next to it also played DVDs and was slightly more expensive ( but less than buying 2 separate devices) which would you go for? DC was $200 USD while PS2 was $300 USD a year later.
