It’s a false security. I had a friend died from stray bullet. He lived in a gated community in NJ, someone followed in and they never found the killer. My parents live in a gated community in Vegas. Everyone knows the gate code, because the gate code never changed for the past 3 years lol. The guards are useless, one time I drove by the guard, he was on his phone, never looked up, few hours later, when I was leaving, he still on the same spot, same position, staring at his phone, never looked up 🙄
I am Italian. Generally speaking, we have good levels of home security (window bars, security doors, etc.) compared to other countries (even if we should increase a lot the structural and fire safety and disaster resilience of our buidlings). I have never seen a gated community here, even if I know there are some. I think that for people who dont want to use other security measures (like theft alarms) or want an added layer of security may be useful. Of course, they cannot garantee absolute security, as your sad example demonstrate. You should also distinguish from bad gated communities with low levels of real security and good ones. Every country has a different approach to physical security, gated communities are apparently good for the American mindset. Personally, if I was a rich American, I would live in a gated community, but I would also use other security defenses, i would not rely too much on being in a gated community.
Gate codes don't work well. You need individual card key and one-time pass for the pizza guy or guest. Active guards are also needed. High resolution camera's are needed. It's expensive solution, otherwise it's just a false security like you said.
Our gated community has guards on duty 24/7 and cameras everywhere. But I do realize if someone really did want to get in bad enough, they could. We always keep our doors locked, cars in the garages, etc. What a gated community does do is cut down on solicitors, which I appreciate. And we don't have gate codes. We have a responder on the front of our cars that lets us through the gate, with a separate entrance for visitors. You aren't 100% safe anywhere but I do feel safer behind the gates.
In my community the main gate is almost a mile away from the second check point. We have never had a break in or any crime on the property. Our security company is run by ex special forces and marines so we are good. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. My HOA is 3500 a month and I pay it gladly, not a problem in 5 years? I love my gated community, apparently you guys are looking at basic gated communities created for affordability.
@@mmc9828 Yep. The thing is, you are told from the jump what the deal is. The costs, what they pay for, the rules, what's expected and we agreed. So we can't bitch and complain after the fact.
Gated community is doesn’t guarantee absolute security. Crimes still could occur inside a gated community. But at least you have a higher chance of controlling crimes if they happen and prevent them from happening.
2:05 That Orlando Sentinel study they quote is biased/misleading. Gated community homes cost a lot more. So you can't compare the homes by price for the crime statistics. You should compare them by specs. For example, a gated community 3bd/2ba home might cost the same as a nongated 5bd/2.5ba. Nongated 5 bedroom homes are in totally different neighborhoods than 3 bedroom homes, and "regular" people are priced out, and that by itself reduces crime. Simply put crime increases as the housing price goes down. I absolutely hate it when they do hit pieces like this which aren't fair and honest. I wonder if some builder sponsored that survey. The only reason people are moving to gated communities is because public access urban areas are getting worse and worse.
show me the crime stats in gated communities. Now compare that to crime in the crime laced neighborhoods. I shall go from there. People spend good money to live in these places and should be able to protect themselves
Usually people who can afford to pay to live in gated communities don’t commit your typical crimes that poor people (from one specific racial demographic, which will remain nameless) do, such as theft, burglary and assault.

We haven't had any crime in our gated community for the 20 years we've lived here. There are cameras everywhere, not to mention every homeowner has their own home security systems.
