Behind the High Wall is a 1956 American film noir crime film directed by Abner Biberman starring Tom Tully and Sylvia Sidney.
It featured an early performance by John Gavin who had just signed with Universal. It was sometimes referred to as his first film although he had appeared in Raw Edge under another name. In March 1956 it was said "John Gilmore" was in the film but in the credits he is called "John Gavin".

The wardens wife if in a wheelchair and cannot walk, but yet she can drive a car. How is that possible back then?

If there are there so many disabled people driving cars now, why not back then? The point to make is, they still can't cure spine damage, which causes paralysis, even after decades of research. Nature always wins!

I met Betty Lynn with Don Knotts at a convention back in the 1990's. He hardly spoke, but she was friendly. Tom Tully was good, especially in Lady In The Lake. Barney Phillips played the Venusian dinner cook in The Twilight Zone episode, Will The Real Martian Please Stand Up.

Early appearances for Betty Lynn ( Thelma Loo of The Andy Griffith Show), and Jon Gavin ( Psycho, etc). Tom Tully played the ship's Captain in the Caine Mutiny, prior to Capt. Queeg's new assignment.

Director Abner Biberman worked much more as an actor, played many baddies & ethnic characters on films & later on TV with his exotic looks, "Gunga Din", "The Roaring Twenties", "Gunsmoke", even "Gilligan's Island"!

Pretty good movie. I was a little bothered by the fact that a woman who's wheel chair bound and lives in a non-wheel chair accessible house (apparently) was able to get to her car and drive.around. The writers just kind of chose to ignored that.

A group of convicts break out of prison, killing a guard, kidnapping the warden and forcing a reluctant inmate to accompany them. However, when a car accident kills everyone except the warden and the inmate hostage, the warden steals $100,000 of the gang's money, then when police arrive he accuses the inmate of the guard's murder in order to cover up his own crime.

Gavin was just a free citizen who had a plan for a gas station, at first, when he was a hostage, before becoming an inmate.
