*This documentary does not target religious people, on the contrary, people like me who do not understand or relate to monastic life but are curious about it.
The monastery is the sacred home of God, but also home to the nuns and monks who have dedicated their lives to God. Romania’s monasteries are known worldwide for their magnificent beauty, but what do we know about the people that live there? How different is the life they lead? How different is the way they see the world?
Behind the Monastery Walls presents a selection of intimate and inspiring interviews in which nuns and monks in Romanian monasteries lay bare their thoughts and beliefs.
Behind the Monastery Walls is my graduation film from BA Media Production Coventry University. I received a scholarship from the Peter Kirk Memorial Fund supported by the European Parliament and produced 2 short documentaries which talks about monastic life in Romania (Behind the Monastery Walls) and in England (Sisters in Love - • Video )

Frumos documentar, insa contine si un lucru neadevarat. Acela ca preotii sunt bine platiti. Sigur, sunt convins ca nu e ceva intentionat ci mai degraba o necunoastere a realitatii. In rest, nota 10! Cred ca a atins obiectivul pe care si l-a propus.

If you don't know anything about Romanian language why are you saying "it sounds like a mix of a Slavic(!/!?) and Latin languages"? Romanian language is similar to Latin language and has a small number of words from other languages such as: German, French, Slavic languages etc. The last linguistics findings of the Vatican researchers brought up that: "the Latin language is based on Romanian language and not the other way around..."

it's obvious the maker of this film has her doubts - and that is why she has not been fair to the Nuns and Monks of the Monasteries - she benefits from their prayers, without knowing it, and she does not even acknowledge this! I am not impressed by a portrayal that in away veers towards "negative" - yes, there are problems in Monasteries - many problems sometimes as people are human - but there is a continuous effort to find God - there is a sacrifice and a spiritual battle all the time - and she should be grateful that they even allowed her to film them!!! This shows their humility! How arrogant of the film maker to go and examine a way of life she knows nothing about - and going with suspicion and looking for something bad to find! I am not impressed by the film maker.

One of my kids married a Romanian Orthodox girl, our family is devoutly Roman Catholic. This girl is physically beautiful, very well educated and she's a saint with a capitol 'S.' We all love her. She observes the Orthodox fasts and feast days. My daughter-is-quiet and she never raises her voice when angry. She's a real credit to our family and we all love her. She loves all people. She has a great family. Any family who makes their own home brew's alright by me! (smiling)

To a great extent the level of any civilization is the level of its womanhood. When a man loves a woman, he has to become worthy of her. The higher her virtue, the more noble her character, the more devoted she is to truth, justice, goodness, the more a man has to aspire to be worthy of her. The history of civilization could actually be written in terms of the level of its women. Fulton Sheen

Tears started to well up in my eyes several times during this beautiful documentary. These monks and nuns have such clean, pure souls. I am obsessed with their lifestyle. I am an autistic, rootless, anxious wreck of a young male constantly disturbed and assaulted by the modern world. Every day I want more and more to pursue this holy quiet life like them, yet I am enslaved by my passions and also fear missing out on a wife. I am so confused and scared about so many things and I just want to escape into a monastery and be with God and not feel the terrifying abyss anymore. Please pray for me; Holy Mother of God save me and Lord Christ have mercy upon me, a sinner. Help and mend my shattered, cloudy heart!

You can be a monk or a family man - if you make time to communicate with God, you will find your peace with Him :) Here are 2 talks by Fr. Calciu - he has spent 21 years in a communist prison. So you know he had practice praying in difficult conditions. He also had a family - he was a priest, not a monk. The first is about the Jesus prayer - a short clip about the strength and benefits of this prayer. The second is a longer talk - he talks about the difficulties of prayer and how to overcome them starting around minute 5:30. I pray to God you find peace :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z2r5YvjY9WM.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--00a48aDTOw.html

The good news is that Christ indeed HAS mercy on you, and died for your sins (and mine, hallelujiah!). You are young, so here is my unsolicited advice. As we know, to be a Christian is to follow Jesus Christ, in ALL of his teachings, and all that the Bible tells us about Him. He is the second person of the Trinity, sent by God the Father to live among us, and to be the sacrifice lamb for our sins. It sounds as if you realized that you are a sinner -- which sounds simple but is actually a HUGE acknowledgement, since many "church" people will say, "Hey, I'm not that bad ... I haven't sinned since I was young." The truth is that by our very nature we miss the mark of perfection, and there are MANY times each day that we sin. SO, that said, come to God, thank him for Jesus Christ and thank him for his salvation -- and believe that Jesus' work on the cross, and his rising from the dead, was for YOUR sake (because it was!). Confess your sins to him, ask for his forgiveness, he is merciful! Go to church, become involved. Have daily devotions, reading the BIble and praying. Ask God that his Holy Spirit will lead you daily, helping you to resist your temptations. In time, you grow. You may get discouraged -- no, you will, because we are human. Many saints had lives very similar to yours -- find good books on the saints who were once VERY worldly and jaded (unti they gave their lives to God through Christ ... St. Paul, St. Augustine, many others). And one last thing: going to a monastery -- or any pilgrimage -- may enhance your faith, but your relationship with God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit starts right where you are NOW. A VERY good quote that I read, when I was preparing to go to Rome, was written centuries ago by someone who had taken a religious pilgrimage in Rome (when traveling was unthinkably difficult), and it speaks to the reality that a PLACE isn't going to transform us -- only daily walking with Jesus Christ, trusting him, finding our forgiveness and meaning and peace with him, is the answer. Ok, here's the quote ------> "To go to Rome is little profit, endless pain. The master you seek in Rome, you'll find at home, or seek in vain." And remember, God knows your heart, and loves you!

So very well done, and I thank you for the thorough explanation of what this video means, why it was made, and for whom it is meant; I'm glad I read the description before I watched it. As a "religious" person, I am glad to try to view this thing through the eyes of a non-believer, or at least as someone who has no knowledge of Orthodoxy.... anyway, great film! we always see films about the Holy Fathers, but not so often do we see the female version, I mean, female monastics are usually even more "invisible" than their male counterparts... I almost feel like I shouldn't look at them; I know that they don't want men to look at them. being myself somewhat familiar with the idea of monastacy, I can only imagine what a newcomer must think; probably, "these people are crazy!" 😉

How to give joy to God Matthew 25: 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ That is whatever you do for a homeless man you do for God, that is if you invite a homeless man to dinner you invite God to dinner, if you give food or drinks to a homeless man, you give it to God. So in the same idea, if you make a homeless man happy giving him joy you make God happy. So weekly or monthly go to a homeless man and ask him what is that his heart desire and if you do what he says you made God very happy. If you are asked for too much put a limit you want. Whatever you give to a homeless man you give to God and people coming from near death say that they had found in after life things that they have given to a poor person. They also report people in aafter life need food, drinks, clothes and a house. Orthodoxy is the church that the gates of Hell will never overcome. Never.

what do I do. well i am 51 now and very aware of the passage of time and the suffering in the world. i give generous donations every month to charity i adopt rescue feral dogs and also help others to adopt animals from Romania spain and Bulgaria. I find the lack of compassion indeed i am horrified by the attitude towards street dogs hoping to survive every day.Romanians regularly run them over deliberately and leave them in great pain or kill them in very nasty ways, i have never known terror like i have seen in the pets of Romania. i am christian and i do my best to practice what i preach though i am far from perfect i do my best. Romania has made a bed for itself and the horror of islamic rule is coming fast within 5 years or so. So sharpen up Romania because you are reaping what you sow. I never hear of the church doing anything to ease the suffering i wish it would. i would support it. thanks for asking Josh best wishes

I understand what you are saying but for someone who didn't live in Bucharest a couple of years ago it is easy to take the dogs' side (funny thing is that one of these days I actually met a foreign girl who asked me if she can walk with me a part of the road to the subway station as there was a street dog around and she was afraid of them). When you are afraid to go to work (considering you don't have a car), when you are afraid to go home, when you are afraid to go with your children in the park because of the possibility that these packs of dogs may attack you things change. You need to understand that this hatred for dogs form the street came after a long period of attacks from these animals. A couple of years ago, for example, there was a foreign student who was attacked in the area where he was staying. He was attacked by 12 dogs and got in the E.R. A lot of dogs were removed from the street of Bucharest some time ago after a child died from an attack of a dog. You need to understand that more important than the life of a dog, it is a life of a human being. Unfortunately, today, life of an animal is as important or even more important than the life of a human being. We prefer to adopt a couple of dogs instead of a child.

vita lule The church is the pillar of truth. Paul said so. There was a council about icons. They're not idols, or else the statues on top of the ark and the cherubim in the tapestries of the tabernacle would be idolatrous. There really really is a difference between icons and idols and worship and veneration and you should spend a little of your time hearing out a priest or researching Orthodox apologetics to at least understand how and why Orthodox is the way it is.

KN GS The 10 Commandments List in Deuteronomy 5:6-21 “I am Yahuwah your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image-any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, Yahuwah your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. “You shall not take the name of Yahuwah your God in vain, for Yahuwah will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. “Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as Yahuwah your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of Yahuwah your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and Yahuwah your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore Yahuwah your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. “Honor your father and your mother, as Yahuwah your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which Yahuwah your God is giving you. “You shall not murder. “You shall not commit adultery. “You shall not steal. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife; and you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.” Read them Learn more about the 10 Commandments by studying each commandment and committing to strive to obey them.

vita lule Look at Exodus 26:1. In God’s commands to Moses concerning the tabernacle, given just a few chapters after the giving of the Ten Commandments, is this instruction: “Moreover you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains woven of fine linen thread, and blue and purple and scarlet yarn; with artistic designs of cherubim you shall weave them.” A similar command with respect to the Ark of the Covenant instructed Moses to have two cherubim of hammered gold at the ends of the mercy seat. God said, “And there I will meet with you, and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are on the ark of the Testimony, of all things which I will give you in commandment to the children of Israel” (Exodus 25:22). Here are images directly connected with the presence of God, and commanded by Him.

[[1Ti 3:15]] but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how it is necessary to conduct oneself in the house of God, *which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth.* Orthodox Church says its OK.
