I disagree that they defy genre, because as the years went by they have definitely solidified their sound as their own unique thing, and they haven't changed genre throughout their career (though Opiate had a bit more of a punk vibe than later stuff). I would say rather than defying genre, they formed their own genre (which is pretty evident with how many bands mimic their sound or are heavily influenced by it, many of which are great in their own right, hell, check out Rishloo-they have surpassed Tool in some ways-especially live), or at least their own rock sub-genre.

@@intentionalmisuse don't forget ",EARSHOT" I thought it was a new TOOL song the first time I heard there song on the radio. But YES they do have there own sound which now is hard to not sound like old songs, they use so many different riffs in each song u can sample 100 Melody's and make a whole song outtta each one. They deserve more mainstream recognition. But TOOL remain the last mystery of rock. We are blessed they never broke up or had drug problems ruin them.

@@kerrickgerba5607 Earshot is crap, lol. I remember hearing them back when I was a teenager when "Get Away" was on the radio, and thought "Cool! A new APC song", until the radio guy made a joke about it being another Maynard side project and then said who it really was, so I went to listen to the full album and it turned out that "Get Away" was the only good song on it. I felt robbed. Earshot was just a cheap knockoff of Tool, but there are truly great bands that are influenced by them/have a similar sound. Check out Rishloo, or Lunatic Soul, or Riverside, or, Indukti, or Vulkan.

23:40 What Maynard says here is how I always thought about music, it's why I don't like pop, it's superficial phony happiness which angers me, whereas angry music is a release. He also expresses the idea of "the shadow" first expressed by the psychiatrist Carl Jung. I don't know if Maynard had read Jung before or had the ideas and then read him but his influence is heard throughout many of their songs.

One of my favorite concert moments ever was seeing Layne Staley sing Opiate with Tool back in the 90s. There was some dude with a stocking mask covering his face sitting under the kick drum during their set...everyone was like, wtf is that guy doing up there.....then they started playing Opiate and that person stands up and started singing the part "Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life"....immediately everyone went nuts knowing full well who's voice it was. I don't know of many other bands that have had the longevity of this band while still being as relevant. The list of bands that have that combined with the length of time between albums and ALL the other projects they do individually is all but non-existent. Many, MANY bands break-up as soon as one member even hints that they're thinking of doing something else on the side, even if it's during a break and even if it has nothing to do with music. I imagine you have to have just LUCK that the members are able to push their own egos to the side to accept that. They're definitely a case example on how to work with with other people in a band and be able to exist for a long time.
