We're back with Sound Recordist Kiff McManus to talk about his incredible work on 'The Grand Tour' , 'Top Gear' , 'SAS, Who Dares Wins' & more!
Simon Bysshe from URSA Straps asks Kiff how he managed to keep the sound rolling with cast regularly plunging themselves and their cars deep into the ocean. How he wired up the vehicles, the equipment he used & his best tips for wiring up the cast to handle all the elements.
Kiff reveals his favourite microphone trick when using a DPA 4061 and shows how he protects the microphone from water, wind and becoming unstuck!
Kiff McManus has worked on some of the most challenging unscripted dramas imaginable. For over 15 years & 80 episodes Kiff worked on Top Gear along with sound supervisor Russ Edwards & sound recordist Rob Entwistle. When Jeremy Clarkson & co departed the show Kiff joined them on 'The Grand Tour' & more recently 'Clarkson's Farm.'
Kiff has also ended up on screen as one of the survivors on 'Bear Grylls The Island' in which his role on the Island was to simultaneously survive and also make sure all the Sound Rushes & Timecode were recorded properly and delivered back every day to production via a Drop-Box system. The audio workflow, timecode setup & the waterproof body worn recorder rigs were all designed & organised by the shows Sound Supervisor : Simon Dyer (www.imdb.com/name/nm1677316/).
Thank you so much to Kiff for taking his time to share with us his wealth of experience in this highly specialised field. Thank you sir!

The Top Gear sound recordists were my first mixing heroes. I've only ever managed to read a couple brief articles/interviews with Russ Edwards and a couple others. Thank you so much for putting this out, this is invaluable and unbelievably cool.

Hey Line Level Media - Thank you! Yes the team behind Top Gear & The Grand Tour have been remarkable dark horses about their work. Rarely giving interviews that go into the deep technical underbelly of the work & planning involved. We were really lucky to have been able to speak with Kiff about this & also his work on 'Boiling Point' in our previous video, it really was a privilege.

That was one wet episode I always wondered how they did that but in a way without realizing it because the audio was always so good I never thought about it too much. I love hearing the war stories through time how it was done and how it has changed.

Thanks imark! To be honest its still a mystery how they consistently manage to get such great audio. There is a dark art. Radio mics are not easy. There is so much nuance behind each rig that you cannot really just give the details and be able to re-create it. Takes so much time & experience so do this well

fascinating. Thanks for sharing. So does this mean that all the "crew" people are contractors, and not salaried? Kiff sort of alluded to it around the 12 minute mark.

Love this channel! Dumb question: I film quite a few 1-2 person interviews. I use two wireless lavs and a boom. I want to blend the lavs with the boom to get the best of both worlds. However, they are always out of time with each other. I use a zoom F8n which has independent input delays but no matter how accurately I measure distances from source to mic I cannot sync the mics. I cannot imagine trying to sync plant mics with lavs for dailies. What am I missing?

A quick question, whipping the cap off the DPA in this video, can you do that with the much smaller 6060's? Is the design the same with them?
