@@chunkycheese73 I was doing all these shootouts and kept being asked to post clips on various forums, so I just started documenting them this way. Glad it’s helped others.
To my ears, the U87, AA CM49 and the ML1 with no modeling sounded best. Many of the emulations felt stuffy on the bottom and lost some breathy zing on top. That's one listen in. Those Advanced Audio mics impress me each time I listen to one of these shoot-outs. Thanks for doing these!
Hi there, great content, I am shocked that you dont get much more views, but I also understand that this is a very niche type of content. Incredible stuff btw. Have you tried AA's cm47fet and cm87 mics? I cannot afford a more expensive microphone and I was curious what your opinion was of their lower end offerings as far as both talking and singing goes for your style?
Hey Michael, thanks so much. I haven’t used any of the AA FET mics. If you can put the money together the Lauten Atlantis is an amazing FET mic. If you watch the used market you can probably grab one for under $1000. It has three cool voicings.
I thought the AA 48T sounded great. Not as good when pushed level wise, but lovely on the softer parts. A bit like my Peluso 2247SE in that regard. A better capsule would probably cure that and then it would be a killer mic.
K&J Music yeah I’ve debated that. I think replacing the capsule and maybe the BV8 transformer with higher quality ones would yield a really nice sounding microphone. The CM48T didn’t sound as bigger then life as my old Peluso 2247SE. The 2247SE has the big mid range you expect from a 47 style mic, but is more open on top. I’m actually curious about AA’s new CM47LE they announced at summer NAMM. It’s not out yet though. Once you start modding the mic though you may be better off just going with a custom build.
I like to see a shootout like this using some of the warm audio stuff like the wa47 and the 251. I own the slate mic and while I can get some usable tracks with it the warm audio stuff simply captures more detail. I would like to see your thoughts on the Warm audio mics compared to the mics you have. The Flea stuff sounds great but most of us are not going to spend 4k on a mic. I loved the song and your voice on this comparison.
guitarheadhunt I haven’t had any of the warm mics in here, but a good friend of mine has the WA47 and I was able to hear it next to a FleA47. My feeling was the WA47 sounded done and already EQed. Actually on his voice I chose it blind over the FleA 47 which I told him sounded fuller, but would need a little EQ to make it sit better in the mix. I’d love to get the Warm WA47 and AA’s new CM47LE in here at the same time. That would be a nice shootout.
@@EandVEntertainment Yes I would love to hear that. I had the wa47 and wa251 in my studio for about a month. Certain tracks I liked the 251 and others the 47. Both I liked better than my cv4. The cv4 is brighter than both but sounds like a mixture of the 2. From different tracks I have heard sounds like the flea 47 is a bit brighter than the wa47. I have always respected the AA mics but never took a chance on them because I can try them out. With the warm I was able to order them and try them out for a while. I did send them back but debating on buying either the 47 or 251. I like both but leaning towards the 47.
@@EandVEntertainment Yeah I have been thinking the weak point of the cv4 is the capsule. I might try a different capsule and see how I get on with it. The original capsule is like a k67 style. I have been wondering how a good c12 or k47 would sound in it. I actually have a mic parts k47 that I might try but I don't think their capsule are anything special.
guitarheadhunt my understanding is it’s a good k67, but many people prefer it with e K47. I’ve never loved the Mic Parts capsules. They’re ok, but never seem to shine when heard next to more established capsules.
Nice job as always, Vin. I agree that the Slate VMS can useful to someone hunting for some direction to go so far as adding better microphones to their mic locker but I think the smarter move for the same money is to buy one of the emulation software plugins like the IK Mic Room or the Antares Mic Mod and pick up a used mic in the $800-900 range. At some point, a person is going to outgrow the emulation software. If that person went with the Slate system, all they have once the move on from the software is a sub-par Chinese mic with sketchy quality control. If you buy the Mic Room or Mic Mod software and a good used mic, you still have that mic once you move on from the software. A quick scan of the $800-900 used mics available on Reverb include the AKG 414, Blue Kiwi, Mojave MA-300, Neumann TLM 103, AT4060, Miktek CV4, Lauten Atlantis ...and that's just in the first few pages. All of those mics would be useful for years; the Slate M1 would become a bad paperweight that keeps rolling off the desk.
sounds like minds of retarded for me. move from software while u got this mic is as stupid as move from mercedes service center to toyota but u still got mercedes.
