HOW TO BUILD A COMPUTER
1. DON'T BUY THE MOST EXPENSIVE MACHINE.
2. RESEARCH ACTUAL BENCHMARK DATA
3. BUY HARDWARE BASED ON YOUR SOFTWARE APPLICATION
4. More cores doesn't mean it's better for you!
Side note: The fast rendering capability of this new machine actually let me eat dinner with my family on the first night I used it. This is incredibly important to me.
A special thank you to Puget Systems for allowing me to visit and for helping me

It's such a weird feeling as an experienced computer tech watching this video (in a good way) that everything they say, is right. They don't bend the truth, their marketing is basically non-existent. This is THE WAY to tailor a PC to the customers'needs. This is how it SHOULD BE done. That's professional quality control. I'm so glad, that after many "arguments" with customers on why did I do it this way or that way, or why I recommend choosing this or that specific component is also beeing confirmed by others in the industry. I'm so glad that this video is out there, so people can see behind the scenes of computer systems engineering. Thank you Smarter Every Day for constantly delivering us this awesome content. And also thank you Puget Systems for doing what you do. Their guides and tests, and publications are really accurate.

@Laz_ yea it is refreshing to hear actual terms and names of parts and processes versus the retail fluff jargon. Edit: I used to live down the street from these guys and even in their old shop they were the best at this. What they provide hardware wise is very much similar if not exactly the same as other companies, but what they provide is something no other company does (actually other companies site their work vs. doing their own studies) a they provide assurance, reliability, and trust. Then even on top they spend the time teaching you anything about your system that is unknown to you. Their shop has always been super clean and professional as well. It's not like some eBay sellers who are building Rigs from used or open boxed parts that only after you bid on it. Do they then actually start shopping for the cheapest parts. Also, I have heard businesses only save money even if they charge a little but more. Time is money and they go to Large lengths to maximize the use of time.

Would you say that customers are as much of a problem as anything? I find myself going down the benchmark path for my own build and just trying to scrape all of the performance of which I'll never really need or use. Honestly, my first gen i5 does fine for almost everything I need. It's odd because when friends ask my to spec them a computer I find it so much easier. Last build was the Zen 3 launch event. I had my girlfriend hold off on her build specifically until I saw Zen 3 which was everything I had hoped and more. Then I saw the $300 price tag and that same day we went off to Microcenter and picked up a 3600 and Gaming Edge Wifi mobo for $340. I've had an itch to build a new rig and for whatever reason I find myself looking at 9100F $70, 9600k - $150, 9700k - $200, 9900k $300, 10100 $100, and 10400s - $150. I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with me, but with the 3600s at $180 sold out Intel seems to have excellent value options. As someone who doesn't compile or render large files I assume that pretty much any of the processors paired with DDR4 and Sata 6.0 would be a nice QOL boost. Only place I've found myself desiring more computer is when I have too many Trading View windows open. I've pushed back my build to probably Q1 or Q2 of next year to see how the market plays out. I imagine customers like myself are insufferable so I just mind my own and build my spreadsheets.

To be fair, I worked for a company a while back that was also 100% focused on what the intended use would be as opposed to just slapping expensive hardware together. We'd have direct conversations with the clients and build them what they needed. However, I am comfortable in saying that Puget is probably a lot more honorable of a company and their entire setup looks about as prestigious as possible.

And you get the binder with the works, image, test results, thermals etc and can get updates with part swapping if something deems to be better and tech support, gold class service.
@unlokia
@unlokia 5 лет назад
StaticImage I don’t think “looking prestigious” is the point. If that’s all you’ve observed, maybe watch it a few more times, as it’s WAY more than looks, and in fact, you’re on totally the wrong page; the point of these systems is EXTREMELY reliable machines which are part picked specifically to suit what they need to do NOW, for a specific, custom group of tasks. Of course they should look well constructed and attention should be (and clearly is) paid to ensure they don’t just look thrown together, but I think clients such as NASA have more pressing concerns for their purchase than how shiny it looks!
@StaticImage
@StaticImage 5 лет назад
@@unlokia You must not understand what the word prestigious means. Because I was referring to the company as being of the utmost quality, run extremely well, being honest and customer-centric, and having an outstanding reputation. It far exceeds what other companies in the same market have been able to accomplish. That having been said, the definition of prestigious is- "inspiring respect and admiration; having high status." So I really have no idea why you took that the wrong way. Because you just used a ton of words to replace the one I used.
@StaticImage
@StaticImage 5 лет назад
@@wobblysauce Yeah, that's what it looks like. I went to their website and it was very impressive. And with what you just said, I feel like prestigious may not even be doing the company justice
@StaticImage
@StaticImage 5 лет назад
@@unlokia One more thing- The company I worked for, as I mentioned, did the same sort of build process Puget does. I personally built a rather large array of systems which were to be used as a flight simulator for a branch in the military to help train pilots. I also personally built DAWs for recording studios which were special made just for the use in recording, mixing/mastering, editing, etc. (each machine was built for a single task, so none of the systems built did all these things)of a few albums I can almost guarantee you've heard, as well as systems used by a couple major movies companies for editing blockbuster movies. And that was just me. There were other people there who had built far more complex systems for many different uses. So it's not as if I'm speaking without a basis for comparison. The company I worked for looks like child's play compared to Puget.

They simply understand that they can't milk private users for their money. Enterprise is where it's at for them. Same with CAD software. Slowly you can get CAD for a lot cheaper with a personal license. Adobe still needs to get the memo on this. Kids aren't learning their products anymore, because piracy has gone down a lot. A friend and I used to go dumpster diving at all the techy bizs. We'd score some pretty good stuff, but it was always outdated (thats why they pitched it). I remember finding hard drives and I kid you not, they were 5 megabytes. (Not gigabytes, no second digit...Five Megabytes). They were about 1/2 the size of a shoebox, and the neodimium mags in were about an inch square at N52. If you got two together, good luck getting them apart. So I wonder. Is our future Utopia, or are we screwed? Because either way, we're gonna find out soon enough at this rate.

Yeah! And he seemed to give credit where it was due for what they do well, rather than just bashing "the other team". His comment that you can often get a Mac with equivalent capabilities, you just have to be willing to spend more money to get there, is pretty spot on. I'm a Mac guy through and through, but I absolutely do respect that PCs are far better at some things, both due to differences in business models (I miss the old upgradeable PowerMac/Mac Pro towers!) and the sad fact that there are things that Apple just plain doesn't care about, even if their customers do.
@seigeengine

Even then, it depends on the product. As they said, Apple tends to release new version less regularly, so they often aren't going to have a product on the market that can compete with PCs, sometimes they might not even be close if it's been a while since a new iteration.

The primary reason to perform 'burn-in' in testing is that failures in semiconductors follow what is known as the 'bathtub curve' as far as failure rates go - you have a high rate of failures early in the device's life, which then drops to a constant low (or zero) rate of failure, which rises again only at end-of-life (EOL) when the part is worn out. You want to run the tests long enough so that you catch the early failures during post-manufacturing testing, so that they don't occur after the customer receives the final product, at which point failure will only occur after enough runtime has accrued that the product is already at the end of its useful life, which in the case of a computer component, can be as long as 10 years or more.

Yes, he could spend a ton of his limited free time away from his family learning information to do a one-off build... or he could just pay someone else to know more than he ever will about it to do that for him. You know, specialization, that thing that civilization is built upon... Or he could trust random suggestions to be of quality when the people giving those suggestions don't gain from good suggestions and don't suffer from inferior ones... Or he could do essentially the same thing he did here with another amateur or company.... But maybe you should get an actual point instead of being a bunch of smug twats.
