Thank you. I’ve learned a lot from this video. I am a professional bird photographer, and we focus so much on keeping the highlights from being blown that it had me so confused why I see a lot of outdoor portraits with blown highlights. Now I totally understand why this is done. I always thought a lot of outdoor portraits used fill flash and kept the highlights from being blown out. It’s great to see that you keep things simple (in a good way) which makes me want to get into portraits more again. The thought of carrying 2 strobes and reflectors around has always turned me off to it, to be honest. I love the idea of available light and this is just the video I needed to inspire me to do more portraits. Thank you

I highly recommend it. Katelyn is an amazing teacher. You will learn sooo much about lighting, location, posing, and now editing too! This is real life experience, you see what works, what doesn’t and how Katelyn troubleshoots through the challenges. Get it, it’s the best $$$ you will invest into your own learning. This literally made me 10000% better. Even if her style is not yours, you’ll still learn a ton!

Thank you for this. I think it will help with my back-lit portraits. I've not been paying attention to the light falling on my lens, leading to very washed-out images.

Love the content. Quick question. When shooting with back lighting (without a bounce or reflective light), how are you able to get the faces so nicely lit?

Hi there! Thanks for creating all of these super helpful videos. One thing I've noticed is that you are often shooting your couples with very low f/stops such as 2.0 and even lower. What impact if any does that have on the sharpness of your portraits when there are two people? Is it less of an issue since they are often close to each other and on the same plane? Thanks!
@KatelynJames
@KatelynJames 3 года назад
Correct! If they are on the same plane they will be in focus! Thanks for watching

How do both of their faces come out so sharp for you with such a low f-stop (1.6)?

If you look closely, it actually seems like everything outside their noses, eyes, and mouth starts to gets bit hazy and then everything outside of them is totally blurry, that’s the beauty of a low low F stop! Her focal point is really where their lips and noses are meeting. She’s also really close to them so she can really dial in on her focal point! Just assuming 🤷‍♀️

On a smaller size image it might do, the only way to know is from seeing a close up or a larger size. Also if you shoot from further away you can get a bit more depth of field and then crop in post.

I try to focus on whoever is in front closest to the camera.

Love KJ! Have watched all of her courses. Do you shoot these videos in Auto White Balance? There seems to be a lot of flickering going on from that minty tealish color and more of a greener tone whenever you are in the office. You may want to just lock in a white balance. It may just be the natural light changing, but you seem to be studio lit, so I figured the light would be constant.

I think it was the led lights in my office thanks for the tips!

I watched the whole video and don’t get me wrong, these are very beautiful photos with great locations but they also can easily be taken with an iPhone, or any other basic camera, why? 1. 98% of the image is preset and color grading, the other 2% is photographer on camera. 2. Only depending in natural light is very risky, if we are talking about professional wedding photography, off flash camera is needed at some point. 3. Very over exposure images. 4. Everything is so white and that makes the photos loosing a lot of detail. 5. Every professional photographer that knows the job is never going to say “I am a natural light photographer”, more than a style is laziness to learn how to measure light, when we are taking in a professional level even more if we are charging thousands of dollars for courses and social events, the natural light should not be our only source of light. One more time, photos are amazing but they could be a lot better with all the money that the client is paying and also the students that are also paying to learn.
