This is a behind the scenes look at the Bostick Family Light Show. Please subscribe to our channel so we can continue to make more videos! Nicely done Sir. You should have a whole channel dedicated to teaching the basics for this, and how to get started even on the easiest setup. You would do well at that!

Thanks! We are planning on doing a tutorial playlist with some of the things people will need to know to get started. We may also do some live seminars to walk people through setting up a show

That is a great explanation of how it works. Christmas 2020 was my first year with pixels (just lights around the windows) but it will get bigger in the future.

This was our first year too, but we started with Halloween, we took what we learned from Halloween to expand and improve the show for Christmas. We plan on some more expansion for next years shows :)

I thoroughly enjoy all of the videos you post. I would like to begin working on my own display, I have all the necessary hardware, I am struggling with the implementation. In particular, how to connect all these objects together. Fore example, I have a Falcon F16V3 controller, the Raspberry Pi, and have opted for the 12v LED's and lets say I have 25 candy canes and a variety of other items. For this discussion I want to focus on the cluster of candy canes. Do I connect each candy cane to a separate channel or end-to-end or what? It seems a waste to use a channel capable of 170 pixels for pnly 20 or so pixels in an object.

Great video and thanks for taking the time to put it together. With all the props and wiring when do you start set up? You must have all that wiring properly labeled. Man oh man.

I keep a decent portion up year round, and swap out the components that are holiday specific. but Halloween set up starts in Sept and takes a few days (up to a couple weeks).

Thank you so much, we’re happy to hear people enjoy the show and are excited to learn more about how to get started. The spooky tree is from Gilbert engineering. We chose the “c” version. I will say that prop was by far the hardest to wire and build a support system for. I may have to do a full tutorial just on that one

We use 18/4 shielded security wire for power injection. We connect the grounds between power supplies but not power. We have a link to the wire and other items we use on our website Bostickfamilylightshow.com

So you have multiple controller boxes(F16s) and they all connect to a switch, and you designate them within the XLights software. Is that correct?

Do you have a more in depth look of the icicle setup. I am very interested in your design. I used commercial for a couple of years, but they rusted out. I would like to incorporate pixels if possible.

Currently most of it is in our attic, but some of it is in our garage for now

How are the poles connected on the megatree? I understand changing the diameter of the pole as you go up...but they don't fit snug. Also...how many pixels and spacing? Looked like 2 inches?

I used self taping screws to secure the poles together. I have the thinner pole about 3-4 feet inside the other pole, and screwed them together. After taking the display down, I would not recommend that method. I would drill out a hole and use a solid bolt or something bc upon trying to remove the self taping screws to disassemble the pole the screws snapped. The tree had 24 strands of 100 at 2" spacing, and the Star had 180. For next year I plan on doubling the pixels to be at 1" spacing and will also probably go to 32 strands - still in a 180* configuration.

@@BostickFamilyLightShow Thank you...good to know. Not really interested in the ASAP...good call on the pins...will try that but probably going to go with steel square tubes. Planning on running my mega at 32 strands 100 pixels at 2 inches...

@@dharnish256 the rigid pole wasn’t too expensive, and held up great even in the 60+mph winds we had, the tree didn’t budge. So I’m happy with that, but would like to add a crank, and change to longer bolts or pins before next year. 2” spacing looks good for effects, but I wasn’t happy with the singing faces/pics or vids so I am going to do 1” next year

Hi @Bostick Family Light Show just wondering where you bought your singing tree?? link?? 2nd is did you use ethernet cable for Power Injection? and lastly...it seems that you use 5V psu (instead of 12V) of all your pixels, any Reason? (is seems that u dont mind power injecting at all :)

singing tree is from boscoyo studios. it is the 4 mouth version. I did not use Ethernet for Power injection, I used 18/4 Shielded Security wire amzn.to/3BlE0XT and i got started with 5v and just stuck with it.. if i did it all over i'd go 12 for less power injection.

@@BostickFamilyLightShow so u do really really love 5V pixels ;-).... i have many 5V pixels & couple of 12V, and im still thinking what should i use in my 1st year (yep i havent started yet)...still debating towards the supreme court "5V vs 12V". hahaha. and when i watch ur vidz....yep 5V win -- less heat but more power injection. "Purchased Justified" lol XD... (sorry bad english).

So the power injection is coming from the other open connection points on the power supplies inside the box?

Yes, we have a few connections for power injection on each power supply. One thing you want to be careful of, is making sure the power for power injection is from the same power supply powering the prop. If they are different you need to cut the power, so the two power supplies are not doubling the voltage. But you also need to make sure the grounds are shared.

@@bboyrughbrnIt is really personal preference. 5v typically require more power injection points, slightly more labor, but typically a bit cheaper. 12v are a little more expensive but usually need slightly less power injection, but also typically need more power supplies. I would recommend trying to stick with one voltage starting out. If you send 12v power to a 5v pixel you will blow them up. if you send 5v power to 12v pixels, they just won't turn on.
