In our current production of TURANDOT, Philipp Stölzl translates the "Ice Princess" into an overdimensional puppet that reflects Turandot's states of mind and the opera's major thematic arcs in a surreally dark way. Take a glimpse behind the scenes of this massiv project and learn how the 6.5 metre tall puppet - affectionately called "Dotti" by our technicians - was brought to life.

Unglaubliche Inszenierung. Wir waren so begeistert. Inszenierung hat mir auch das Buch von G.Orwell „1984“ erinnert. Ich möchte es am Sonntag wieder sehen ❤️

Wir freuen uns, dass es Ihnen so gut gefallen hat! Und die Verbindung zu G. Orwell ist tatsächlich ein interessanter Punkt. Werden wir P. Stölzl bei Gelegenheit mal fragen, ob er das auch mit verarbeitet hat.

Tatsächlich erinnert es mich an Edward Gordon Craigs „Superpuppe“ aus dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert, wie der Regisseur sagte, was Turandot zu einer Art göttlichem Fetisch macht. Diese Form wird auch in Puppenspielen in China verwendet, und Puppen werden auch in der traditionellen japanischen Theaterkultur Bunraku verwendet.

Amazing to get this insight! I've seen Turandot not long ago and it impressed me a lot, especially this unsettling, dark atmosphere, really a great way to show the night full of tension! I didn't imagine that this much work, technology and a whole team of people go into creating Turandot and her movements!
