Star Bytz writer Tan Kit Hoong follows TGV Cinemas Sdn Bhd CEO Gerald Dibbayawan through the projection room of TGV Sunway Pyramid in Malaysia to check out what goes on behind the scenes at the cinema.
With traditional film projectors on the way out, TGV has already completed its switch to digital cinema projection, with other cinema operators set to be 100% digital by the end of the year.

And to think, I used to be a Projectionist when all I had access to was 16 mm films and analog audio. Yes, I am old.
@ChrisBrown-wr5wf

In days of old, film reels were mounted vertically ... but they coudn't get an entire feature on one reel, (usually four or five) So they used a little trick. They would place an old fashioned 1d (England) coin in the last few layers of the film reel. When that clattered to the floor, the projectionist would look out his view windows, and watch for cue marks in the corner of the screen. At the precise moment, he would start projector two, (but leave the window covered) Right on cue2, - with the second projector up to speed - he would open the second window / close the first window. The viewer would be none the wiser they were now watching the second projector. Meanwhile, the projectionist would load the third reel onto the first projector ... and again wait for the coin to clatter to the floor from the second projector.

Abe Coulter you can see it's analogue with the naked eye.
@Fergo101
@Fergo101 4 года назад
Abe Coulter to clarify, film contains an analog optical track picked up by a light source in the exact spot he pointed to. Film can also contain two other digitally encoded tracks (dolby digital and SDDS) + DTS time code. The Dolby digital and DTS time code readers are typically mounted above the projector. Analogue audio pickup must be located below the gate in an exact location so as to ensure sound / picture sync. What he pointed to was analogue optical audio.

technology has come a long ways since I was a projectionist. I had a film fly off the platter once. Also, putting together a film and breaking down a film was cool. I miss that job.

Loved this video gave me a chance to see how far modern cinemas have come from my days in the Projection Room, with the 35mm and sometimes 70mm film. We used two projectors in my early career where the reels lasted about 20 minutes, later it was over to Cake Stands.

A movie in 2K resolution (JPEG 2000 Format) and 5.1 sound is about 100-160Gb. Dolby Atmos adds another 12-20Gb. 4K files are over 200Gb. CD-Roms were only used in the film days for the digital 5.1 DTS soundtracks. They were loaded into the decoder with 2 or 3 drives and syncroniced with the picture.

@ChrisBrown-wr5wf
@ChrisBrown-wr5wf 6 лет назад
No, it's polarised light - effectively two different images in rapid succession via the polarised filter he showed in front of one lens. The googles you wear are also polarised lenses. When the light is polarised at 90 degrees to the polarised lens, light cannot get through it. So by the filter polarising the light, each eye sees a black screen whilst the other eye sees the picture. I think the pictures change at the rate of 10,000 a second, (not the frame rate of projected film at 24fps) ie one frame of film flashes 5000 times a second into each eye.

They probably had to wear sweaters because it could be very cold to keep those going from overheating. Especially the venting that sucks the hot air out. Kind of like how dryers work when drying clothes so it doesn't overheat. It has some same mechanism when it comes to ventilation and temperatures. I remember being in a theater called wow7 when I was a kid and climbed on the chair in the very back row to see through the window and saw these projectors, I was afraid of them lol.

Not quite accurate about the IMAX stuff. IMAX is actually wider than 16:9 so the 2 projectors are overlapped and edge-blended in the middle. This gives you 2 16:9 projectors side-by-side with around 20% overlap in the middle. If IMAX wanted brighter, they would just give you a brighter projector... not 2 projectors. The CEO is well informed, but not that well informed!
@allrock1238
@allrock1238 7 лет назад
its also true one can project a 3D film showing with 2 projectors each with a different light polarizer in front of its lens , one projector for the left eye image one for the right , presenting both images on the screen "at the same time" ,, not alternating like the single projector 3D system , its naturally brighter as well .. but does require very careful image convergence and color balance between the two projectors .. The Imax cinema here already uses Laser projection technology and there system uses again two projectors but each one uses a laser light engine using a different tuned spectrum of light kind of like the alternating light spectrum technology dolby vision 3D used but because lasers have such pure light spectrum output the 3D glasses are different and let a lot more light pass through,, it makes a huge image quality difference as well as using a quarter of the electric power at almost twice the light level..

@Mark_TDD
@Mark_TDD 7 лет назад
He wasn't actually recording the movie. They were there for a press tour and it happened to be playing around that time. It's not like he will just randomly go up to the glass window in the projection booth and put his camera there to record it. THAT is piracy. This video does not include any acts of piracy. So to summarise, it's not piracy.

They are to be considered dangerous at all times and only handled with proper protective clothing no bare arms like the guy in the following video and full face protection at all times, treated with extreme respect , having seen and heard the results of one exploding inside a projector lamp house as an example , This will give you an idea of just how bad an explosion, recorded with a unmanned camera "$4,000 Movie Theater Projector Bulb Explosion!" they are a high pressure glass shrapnel grenade that can explode and spray glass fragments with huge force if there is the slightest flaw in the pressure vessel or from any tiny impact..
